Trash game really. Grandma always cheats.

Would be nice to have free rent if the landlord's in jail

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The aution rule is the best because you can buy a property for nothing or force someone else to go all out

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

And the only way to win is to never play.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I refused to play by any house rules. The game just doesn't end otherwise.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If everybody agrees to a certain set of rules, then are valid. Just like Republican party has done.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I believe that 'when in jail =no rent' is actually from a rulebook. At least in version with plastic cards instead of paper money.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's the point of having to go a whole rotation without buying? Just a scenic round?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

To spread the players out.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess so that there a chance the first person to roll doesn’t get an advantage of being first.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's just stupid and prolongs the game. No point at all.

The only thing to remember when it comes to Monopoly:

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My strategy: flip the game board on my 4th turn. No one asks you to play monopply after that.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who’s still playing Monopoly?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're not really rules people get wrong. They are actually in the rule book as optional game rules.

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

They've added those "optional game rules" to the book because so many people were playing by them.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Much like the dictionaries gave up and define "literally" as also meaning "figuratively" they're just documenting people doing it wrong

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

They are now, yes. Not in the original rulebook.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the original "rule book" was directions printed inside the lid of the box.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I never actually enjoyed playing Monopoly by any rules. I haven't tried in ~20 years though.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, you get nothing for landing on free parking! Stop putting money there! It makes the game take forever!

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

How does the auction work...where do u start...and can u change ur mind and bid for the property anyways?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How the auction is run isn't stated - that's up to the banker. And, yes, the person who landed on the property can bid. If everyone else doesn't have a enough cash, then you let it go for auction to either get it cheap, or cause problems by making another player overspend.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like the free parking house rule better, it makes the game more interesting to me, also have never ever played "a quick game" of monopoly.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Those are some weird house rules which i can't believe many people use.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"House rules" is not "getting the rules wrong".

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

A lot of people think these are the official rules. So yes, that IS "getting the rules wrong."

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

By definition, if you call it a house rule, you know it's not the official rule.

Then *those* rules aren't relevant to *this* discussion, since the meme clearly labels them *house rules*.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

often, these house rules are told as main rules. Or get passed on as main rules.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Who came up with that bottom left rule? "monopoly is going to take forever, let's have a tour around the board before we get started!"

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think this cause it eliminates first staters ability to land properties first. Starting position isn’t decided by one throw.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've only won at Monopoly once. It was Star Wars Monopoly and I was high as fuck for the very first time.

5 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 5

The set with the metal character models as the playing pieces? I have that set and it's fucking tight.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And we watched that Robin Hood movie with Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman and it sucked so much.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I have never known that movie even existed till now. Not sure if I should thank you for that or not ...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was so high I got awful vertigo. I couldn't reach the remote to change it. The characters were laughing and I'm like, this shit sucks.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just watch the 80s series from the UK. Michael Praed and a young Ray Winstone. Robin of Sherwood. Music by Clannad.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's on Prime with ads.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think I actually "finished" a single game, usually people quit

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The problem with the game is it eliminates players. People put money on free parking as hope for losing players but then it lasts too long.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dumb question about the last one... If it goes to auction, does the person that passed on the property get to bid?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What’s the starting price? The mortgage value on the back?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which, knowing that the opponents doesn’t have enough cash can start an auction and walk away with the property for less than initial price.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's almost like monopoly was built to be a scathing commentary on capitalism! Oh wait, it was.

I feel like this should say Community Cheat instead

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

One funny exception though. We don't all start off with the same amount of money... If we have any at all.

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Well it's never been accused of building friendships.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Monopoly is actually a much shorter game when following the actual rules.

5 years ago | Likes 1500 Dislikes 3

It's still awful

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Unfortunately, 90 percent of the game is squabbling over trading. And people wonder why I hate it.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To speed it up further double everyone's money means you can build quicker which stops the tedious £2-£20 first rents

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Roll dice. Flip board. I hate this family. Done.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also much faster when you hand out 3 random properties at the start to each player.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The auction rule is what speeds it up the most.

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Always buy unowned property in Monopoly. And in the game of Life, always go to college.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yep, far more brutal too.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Indeed. I have an edition that points that out in its rules, my favorite being how it highlights in very bold print that you cannot loan ->

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

<- money between players or negotiate payment schemes if someone can't pay rent, saying "The GOAL OF THE GAME is to bankrupt the other ->

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

<- players, WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU POSTPONE THAT?!"

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol I played with my in laws once and my hubby was complaining I was being too aggressive & would bankrupt everyone. “Babe- THATS THE POINT”

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's still a terrible game, where you keep playing for an eternity after the winner is clear.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only if players are willing to sell and trade properties of you get 3. If you can't get houses or hotels on a property it takes forever.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

those house rules exist because an unmodified monopoly game ends with children crying.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's only short if you apply strategy an min-max your efforts. It's not the house rules that prolong the game, its mismanagement. amateur 1/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Players will prioritize things like the railways and boardwalk, while better players want to cover as much ground as possible to prevent 2/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Others from building or taking control of corners

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Never played a game under 2 hours

5 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 0

Play with finance majors that shit is 30 minutes

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Using the book rules you can easily finish a game in about an hour and a half. It's more brutal because house rules aren't bailing you out.

5 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

I once won a 4 player game in about 45 minutes. One player had particularly bad luck to my profit, which quickly snowballed. Best game ever.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Once won a game against my friend in about 15 min. He rolled doubles like crazy and bought a ton of stuff. I got 1 monopoly he hit it twice.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The rules used to include a variation called "the limit game" - whoever has the most $$$ at the end of x minutes is the winner.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*flips comments section over*

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cutthroat Monopoly. Each player has 15 seconds, barring doubles. Need to quickly pay another player, but lacking funds? Give them a property

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It also sticks closer to its original form as The Landlord Game, a socialist tool to demonstrate how only one person can win in capitalism.

5 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 1

Irony being, capitalists bought the rights and made an actual game of it, for profit... And as rights holders, only 1 company profits!

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In real life, you don’t have to pay to stay at Boardwalk with a Hotel unless you choose to.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

Damn straight!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

True, you could stay on Baltic Avenue with no houses but it'll still be owned by the same fuckers

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the green rule is the most commonly ignored one, and is probably the biggest contributor to game length 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

because forcing every landed-on property to be bought will wipe out everyone's cash, causing even low rent to be deterious

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It isn't forced to be bought. It's auctioned. It's possible no one bids. (Everyone will buy at one dollar though.)

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, they whole "it's possible no one bids" is wrong as you state, even 1 dollar is worth it. Better still, when everyone has <$50, you can

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

now claim almost every property every time if you have >$50, because no one can, or dares, outbid you.

This is a popular house rule

House rule: game's over when somebody gets slapped

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

By the book: The game never truly ends. We are all still playing until the day we die.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's when the wrestling match starts.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Wrestling? Pfft. It's a fucking cage match, my friend.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it's almost like capitalism is wholly unfair to everyone except the rich

5 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 4

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The first version of Monopoly was called "The Landlord's Game" and was designed to teach about income inequality 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

That is so cool

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which is exactly why Monopoly is fun if you're winning, but frustrating if you're losing.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Just like life, come on, come on lottery, ah fuck 4 more kids!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd be really interested in playing The Landlord's Game with the anti-monopolist rule set she designed to see how differently it plays.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also:There is a limit on the amount of houses in the game. You can lock down others just by buying enough cheap houses to deny them progress.

5 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

That's all and well until you pay for repairs.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bit of a risk remains. On the other hand, there is a good chance that you made enough

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You need to add in that you can't buy a hotel without first buying houses.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Maybe YOU can’t…

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a very basic rule of the game

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Considering we're talking about house rules vs actual rules, plenty of people play where you can skip straight to a hotel

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Honestly never heard of it but if you don't have to buy the houses then why would you?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've seen it where people pay the cost of the house buy don't actually put them on the board.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have never heard of some of those house rules.

5 years ago | Likes 350 Dislikes 7

I never heard of any of them either. Not only do I play the game a bunch I l watch people play it on YouTube. Both online and on board.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never heard of any of those house rules, except the auction bit which we always forgot.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

My family always skipped the auctions just because it was a pain in the ass to do.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Except the full rotation one, I've never encountered anybody who doesn't play with those house rules.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Played them all; didn’t realize the real rules until I was 18 living with roommates

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We do the free parking one, but the rest of these are fucking stupid.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We apparently never played by the book, I only recognize some of the house rules, none of the official ones

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm the exact opposite; we always played by the rules. My family are mostly in finance and accounting though....

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The only one we've ever used was the last one - if you don't want to buy you dont have to. Never used any of the others.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We always played with all of them.

5 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 0

Here in Holland we use all of the too, I wonder how they became such a globally used wrong set of rules

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s a good question. I learned them from my parents. No idea where they got them from.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes, we used all of them

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They all seem like shitty rules tbh. Why not just start the game with an extra $200 and buy right away unless you like super long games.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've only heard of the green one. The pink one seems to be aimed at peventing the 'winning move' Get some properties then go to jail.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can't lose money in jail. I always try to go to jail on purpose, and never use get out of jail free cards.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After your third turn you gotta pay $50 and get out.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even so, that is a bargain when you're staring down a board of potential houses/hotels.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Once all the properties are bought, going to jail is one of the best moves you can do

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1
