The insane part about it is Paramount is trying to swat down YouTube channels posting the episode(s) . Paramount has no rights to him or him doing other shows. Fuck Paramount.

On a side note I have to admit the man's work ethic. If I spent my last might at work at a job I spent 11 years doing, I would *not* be right back on camera 24 hours later, I'd be in bed for the whole of that day, enjoying the feeling of doing nothing.
calenti
I was not a huge Colbert fan but I love this. Cable access FTW and respect to SC for doing this.
colinstu
Why does everyone link the low quality reupload? Give Colbert's actual video some dang credit / views / interactions https://www.youtube.com/live/jJTXB5uT_C4
DianNaoChong
CBS funded the show and it's still their ip. CBS along with every corporate lawyer, is trained to do this but they have a history of backing off when asked. This whole thing is a nothing burger.

I constantly say that unless the majority of people band together and stop using these services , YouTube, etc and hurt these assholes in their wallets and shareholders nothing will change
dghughes
Sadly, it's to the point where those services are a utility and most people rely on them. Not just people in the USA. It's like the reasoning of why the EU was formed is so countries would rely on each other so much it makes it stupid to start a war. You the attacker would only hurt yourself.
Dudenoooo
Gonna die without Netflix and paramount plus?
bigguywhokills
In what ways can I boycott CBS and Paramount in a way they will know it's for their politics? I don't have cable.
Sulanis
I still think colbert should of used CBS and Trump.
They violated his first amendment rights, like they did with Kimmel. All so the FCC would approve a multi billion deal
nintendolunchbox
Run by who? Told what to do by who?
Sulanis
CBS is owned by Paramount. Paramount wanted to merge with skydance. The only way to approve that merger is if the FCC approves. The FCC chair Branden Carr is a massive supporter. Trump is the biggest snowflake and colbert was outspoken against Trump all the time. Trump has publicly said colbert should be cancelled. CBS cancelled colbert because if they don't the FCC will not approve the merger.
Hence why they violated Stephen Colbert's first amendment rights. Trump weaponized the government.
iusedtodream
Wait for it. Trump et al will still block the deal. Because sadism is always hungry.
themuffulettaisalsoaverygoodsandwich
He should have a show with Jack White and Jack Black going head to head in a battle of the bands. But what to call this competition....?
nintendolunchbox
They did this just recently on SNL
themuffulettaisalsoaverygoodsandwich
well it FELT like an original idea. oh well. it's been a while since i watched SNL.
DonL9
I must have missed that. Do you remember which episode?
FlintNorth44
Fuck Jack Black. Time to leave the cult of personality and see these people for who they are: inhuman sellouts.

Good old YouTube DMCA - guilty until proven innocent.
makesense
Except they were actually in the right this time. Then they got a bunch of bad press afterwards and decided to pull back all their requests.
BigDaddysMeatWagon
It's not even YouTube. That's just how the DMCA works. The DMCA needs to die
PineappleLoopsBroether
The link works, what problem occurred?
TheManWhoStaresAtTurtles
Enough people yelled at CBS that they backed off for now. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/tv/articles/cbs-reverses-decision-stephen-colbert-080440769.html
marsilies
CBS killed some re-uploads of the video to other Youtube channels. Not convinced that was a "problem," but people were confused why CBS was doing DMCA takedowns on behalf of a cable-access show, but it turns out their co-produced this specific episode: https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/cbs-stephen-colbert-only-in-monroe-public-access-show-1236758093/
TalkingSnake
He should have Kathy Griffin on and apologize to her.
She was fucking right the whole time and Stephen found out for himself.
nintendolunchbox
I'm not familiar that he ever disagreed with her.
TalkingSnake
Stephens conservative catholic side came out after her traump mask photo scandal, and despite a well done edit of the interview he was not kind to her in person.
I think he should be able to admit that he was wrong for that.
nintendolunchbox
She got sent through the ringer with secret service. She's finally gotten past it.
TalkingSnake
She has, and here Colbert has been the target of presidential ire and hasn't gotten half the pain she endured.
It would be cool if he said as much.
nintendolunchbox
I understand what you are saying. He has been clowning on trump since 2016. A sorry for, hey your decapitated trump pic , I shouldn't have criticized. Seems water under the bridge so many hell scaped years later.
Nnoodles
- The copyright strikes were for "unauthorized re-uploads"
- CBS finance and produced "Only in Monroe"
- CBS / Paramount is not trying to suppress Colbert. The show is copyrighted, by CBS and it is on Colbert’s brand new YouTube channel.
- Because of the bad press, public outcry, ect. CBS officially waived takedown notices for unauthorized reuploads of the episode across YouTube.
zebraImaginationDog
Nah fuck the facts, we’re here to be angry and shake our fists
nintendolunchbox
Thanks for the clarification.
anononanonanona
The details matter but the results in the wild, the negative public perceptions, are exactly what CBS deserves for what they did to Colbert and our democracy as a whole.
marsilies
Point of correction, CBS financed THIS episode of "Only in Monroe." They don't regularly finance a cable access talk show in Monroe, MI .
FlintNorth44
FUCK PARAMOUNT
Toqom
Fuck skydance, they bought Paramount. So tired of everything saying paramount this and paramount that, it was skydance that bought Paramount and TikTok and they are Zionist nazis
martineb72
Actually Only in Monroe was a thing before Colbert did it and it was a thing after he did it. So CBS doesn't own Only in Monroe. They only own the one show 10 years ago.

I do have questions. People reuploading have history of ' fair use' if they provide commentary which most did. Why were they flagged before the outcry ?
marsilies
From what I've read, the videos being taken down were just straight re-uploads no additional commentary or anything. They were mostly taking advantage of Colbert's channel having low visibility. https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/cbs-stephen-colbert-only-in-monroe-public-access-show-1236758093/
RatsLiveOnNoEvilStar
Because big corps have systems to auto copyright report anything that algorithms think is too close and YouTube’s policy is guilty until proven innocent so the channel gets an auto strike that they have to fight.
Basically bots.
MisterFluffi
Depends, more places have been pushing back challenging whether a lot of those commentary ones are actually transformative or not enough to count, or using that as an excuse to attempt a challenge in the hopes the person won't challenge.
FaeVikingPrincess
commentary fair use still requires you to not also show the entire thing. If you just play the entire thing and just give comments it doesn't fall under fair use. This is why most commentary videos don't upload the entire content they are commenting on
nintendolunchbox
So just claim and work it out later if they were wrong.
AstralInfinity
I tried searching for Colbert's new YouTube channel and I prob. missed it but I couldn't find it...only his old Late Night channel. Do you have a link or should I search for something special? Sorry if I'm just being dense...

Judging by previous examples, looks like they used the same set. So this was probably filmed on CBS's dime.
FraudulentPepsi
He used the public access studio. CBS didn't have anything to do with it. They've retracted their copyright claims now though
nintendolunchbox
Well that's something. They were already getting blasted for it , so I guess they backed off rightly.
Hekatombe
"A CBS spokesperson said in a statement that the “Only in Monroe” episode featuring Colbert was “financed and produced by CBS Studios and was posted on Stephen Colbert’s YouTube channel in collaboration with Monroe Community Media and ‘The Late Show’s’ YouTube channels.”" https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/pop-culture-news/cbs-backs-effort-stop-sharing-colberts-surprise-only-monroe-segment-ba-rcna346809
FraudulentPepsi
That's the complete opposite of what I read. Damn
swofromtherock
This article is propaganda. The "CBS Spokesperson" is an unnamed source, and the article about CBS is written and posted on NBC. Therefore, this article cannot be held accountable, and should be ignored as an opinion.
nintendolunchbox
No. It's a real access show that he is guest hosting.
Nnoodles
CBS did in fact finance and produced the "Only in Monroe"
nintendolunchbox
Okay. If true Well good on them then for calming their tits and let the show be and not continue on take down complaints.
Wuz314159
but Bedford, UK has the exact same set. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3H_Xlh53ME . . . Also, Allentown, PA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTHJRTV7opI
nintendolunchbox
They are using this public access show he actually was on a decade ago as inspiration.
marsilies
Colbert appeared on Only in Monroe once before, in 2015, right before taking the Late Show gig, so the set they made on his show for those sketches was likely inspired by it. Also, have you ever seen "Between Two Ferns" ? Cable access shows have basically a recurring theme, no budget, so simple chairs and a plant is pretty standard for them.
FredGarvinMaleProstitute
well... if you watch the show you'll find that they "used" to have the set.
nintendolunchbox
Only in Monroe is the real show
