For things like this is that I hate when we humans use animals when there's no actual reason for it at all. I can understand it in previous decades/centuries, but in this age, where cars, trucks, etc. exist, it just infuriates me that we insist in using animals just cause it looks cool, it's fun or to re-enact ancient times. Utter stupidity from everyone involved in this kind of crap.
Driving horses are some of the most calm and collected horses you'll ever see. In fact, a lot of drivers will often pair up an older experienced horse with a horse that's still in training to help the newer horse develop that calm easy-going nature. That's why in a lot of driving accidents you'll see one horse go ballistic while the other remains calm (although in this case I think both horses are very experienced and this was just an unfortunate situation).
These are draft horses. This is the situation for which they have trained and for which they were bred over many generations. Even human athletes have accidents; fortunately this was not nearly as bad as it could have been.
No horses came out of the wild to be trained by humans, we exploit them for their labour and for our entertainment. "training" is more like conditioning, if we treated a human in the same way it would be considered abuse by the majority of people. Like military "training" more and more people can see what we do to animals is abuse too. You are a conservative working to slow progression one internet comment at a time.

A lot of people are rightly concerned for the horse, but what we have seen is handlers with skill and care and a pair of horses with an incredible amount of trust in them. You don't get horses this calm in a clearly distressing scenario unless they are very, very well trained and treated.
So yeah it was a shitty situation but I feel confident that they are very well looked after, which matters a lot.

I've become spoiled. I like being able to have six different bit drivers on me and I use the hammer far more than I expected. Also the positive retention lever that keeps it from opening unless I want it to.
It's scary because if the harness had twisted or the other horse had spooked and taken off the harness could have twisted the horse's leg and torn tendons, broken it, etc and that's very often fatal for a horse.
I notice the horse' right front hoof comes out of the slot it's supposed to be in and gets stuck on the rigging, leading to the horse going down from there. Something spooked it
Completely talking out my ass but based on the horse's first reaction, I think one of the reins got stuck and the handler was in the process of getting it loose, but the horse panicked and pulled, making it even worse and causing the horse to rear in an attempt to get free, and the horse gets its leg over the front rigging and completely locks itself up. That's why in the horse industry you always carry a knife.
I think from the look of it, the horse got their foot ontop of the rigging and got confused about what to do next. You could see the rider readying to dismount, so I think they were about to correct the horse' posture, but then it spooked, probably when its foot slipped forward infront of the bar suddenly

When the left white horse reared up and kicked it's legs the right one went over one of the straps holding the 2 together. That is what the guy was cutting to free it.

Its normally easier to replace the entire thing than repair

This was one of those massive, 3 foot by 2 bales, and naturally, his shoe caught the baling twine and he started dragging the bale. By his shoe. Needles to say, I was pissed with myself for not following rule 9 that day, but luckily someone came with scissors while I held the horse still.
I always have a little Kershaw clipped to my pocket. I can't begin to count the number of times I've popped it out and handed to someone who was grateful for it. Opening boxes, those annoying clamshell things, stupid clips on clothes, etc... there's always something. I'd carry a Leatherman if it weren't so bulky and hard to open one-handed
I carried a Super Tool from -94 to -09 when I started commuting by airplane and it became super inconvenient to mail it to myself from the airport when I forgot, so I was gradually weaned off for a time but relapsed around 10 years ago and now it has worn out two sheaths (they don't make sheaths that fit anymore) and an unknown number of pockets. Might become the last tool I ever use.
