My mom is a tiny woman. My brother is very tall, taller than anyone in our family. Every time she hugs him, she says she is sad because she can't pick him up anymore. He is 34.
I remember the last time I ever saw my mother alive. I was fortunate that it was a good goodbye, but she passed suddenly and without warning several months later and even after 15 years I still think how I would have hugged her a little longer if I had known.
I got a late start and am so determined to do this. Theyll be graduating college and i'll be like, "aw whose my big girl? Whose my postgrad baby? *hoist*
I'm actually considering starting power lifting. My 6yo is 22kg and I can still lift him up but last time my back sounded a bit like rice crispies. And I'm not ready for that shit.
Yes, and thank God I got big enough that she couldn't continue it. Does anyone really want to be picked up by their mother at 30? Mine would have half killed herself. We're bemoaning a nothing burger. Being picked up is not the top expression of love.
Worse: one day, my mom let me down (in an epic way and together with my father) and I've never spoken a word with them ever since; don't even know, if they're still alive. That was nearly 10 years ago - and I haven't regretted it a single second.
Most people look for firsts. First words. First steps. First ride without training wheels. In the hidden heart of a mother, we remember the lasts. Last time at the breast. Last night in a crib. Last round of trick-or-treating. Last day living at home.
One of my fondest/saddest memories was the last time I bathed my daughter in the tiny tub thing… idk it’s blue, maybe 2 gallons?… she got too big… and then I couldn’t dry her on her sunflower pillow thing… and now she’s 9…
Man, he really has a downfall after he was President of Mars, the first Doctor to perform a brain transplant, NFLs rookie of the year, the Golden Ticket winner and heir of Wonka's Chocolate Factory, knocked out Tyson in the first round of an exhibition match, he voiced Lola Rabbit in the original Space Jam, was the scientist at Area 51 who made first contact with Mewtwo, he saved all those kids in the cave in Thailand, he learned to speak Dolphin, was the first ever Mullet to become a real life
And then one day one or the other of your parents dies, and at odd times you find yourself just wanting to be a kid again, wanting to be held and to feel like someone is there to catch you if you fall. But there's no one who can do that so completely for you, because you're the one who holds others up now. You're the dad or the mom or whatever, and they rely on you. It's not a feeling of being completely alone, because you're not, but it is a kind of special loneliness.
"It's like getting shot thru the gut with a canon ball, leaving a great big hole. Eventually, it starts to close up, from the outside in, and then it doesn't hurt so bad. Course, then you hear a song, or a familiar smell or the wind hits you the wrong way, and the hole tears wide open again. Believe it or not, it heals back faster every time. A death isn't like getting divorced or losing your job, you don't 'get over it', you have to integrate it into your life. Learn to live with it."
An analogy I like is the ball in the box. There's a ball in a box with a button. The button is Grief. At first, the ball is huge and hits the button all the time. Gradually, the box gets bigger so the ball has more room to move and doesn't constantly hit the button. But it never completely goes away.
not all parents disserve to be parents and you def deserved better. i hope you can cut that tumor out of your life some day if it doesnt cut itself out
Nah, mine could have when she stopped. She said she didn’t want to anymore and I was old enough to not need to be carried around but should become more independent. She’s also the person who would answer my countless pleas to go to Disney World with, “I love you but not enough to do that.” She’s a hoot
Did she have a favourite place, or a favourite view? Scatter her there, and say good bye. Invite people who loved her, and celebrate her life together.
Tuck her in for the long night’s sleep; after all is said and done, you feel good about it. Remember, this doesn’t mean that she’s gone from your thoughts- just from your mantle. Of course everyone deals with death in a different way- but I found it extremely helpful, and healing, to finally say goodbye.
Sounds like you aren't ready yet. Maybe set up some photos of you all around her urn. Make it feel special. Nothing says she can't stay there forever. If spreading her ashes was her wish/your intention, it's still OK to sit with your feelings for a while before letting her go. You can cry, grieve, celebrate, feel sad, feel happy, dance with memories or sit with the tears. However you need to start moving forward. Then when you are ready, you will know it.

I was 1 when this happened. She didn't come back into my life until 42 years later. She can't pick me up now but she tried!

Fucking great. Thanks.

Maybe your moms stopped picking you up, but don't worry - they'll never have to stop putting you down!

You know this will cause soooo many millennials to go and make a poor lady dislocate a disk, right?

Just as planned

As a mum with kids getting to that size, that hurts.

What movie is this from?
broof99
Bladerunner 2049, it's gorgeous I highly recommend it if you can handle a slower paced movie
Frostedjakes
I solidly second this. Even if you've never watched the original, Blade runner 2049 is worth a watch on it's own.
Though I do recommend watching the original, they are both master works of art.
ExquisiteConundrum
My kid is 10 and 130 lbs. I can lift him but not carry. It sucks so bad.
p3pp3rs
And that's why I still pick up my kids. Even though they're grown and one is an adult.

My kids are 7 and 9, and while it’s starting to get difficult with the 9 year old, I’ll be picking them up as long as they’ll let me.
Blue4Five
Perhaps... tell them that their time of being picked up is coming to an end. This would make them aware to cherish when you can still do it.

Same here! My daughter is 7 and still asks for uppies because she knows she'll get them as long as I am able

work out more, and you can continue to do so

I’ve worked out 6 days a week for over 20 years. This is as good as my 5’2 ass will get. My 9 year old has classmates taller than me already 😅

There was a line from Questionable Content that was kind of about this sort of thing. "It's a hole that'll never fully close."

Friend of mine once told me, "welcome to the worst club in the world".

Not because she didn't want to, because you grew up to be such a big boy/girl/etc. I'll bet she still gave you a big hug whenever she could.

My mother called me to tell me, "You are a piece of shit." Then proceeded to call me Paul, which is my father who she drove to suicide. Fuck that.

Yeah mine is 6' 145 so I'm not picking him up but he did get in bed with me last night after a bad dream. Not all grown up yet at 16
