Pop-up spider (final version): After the first concept, I’ve traced all the parts (butchered the concept) and made a template for an improved version. It really starts to work now and I will try to combine three of these in one spread. This card isn’t that big so it should be possible in book size.

Making a pop-up spider was a fun challenge. The natural position of the legs made me look for a mechanism that would proved the angles I needed. I ended up using a pyramid base, cutting it down to the minimum, and adding everything else using v-folds. It’s actually super basic once you know how a v-fold works. It also animates very natural using these mechanisms. My favorite part is how the front legs lift up and makes it look aggressive.

I took apart the concept, scanned it, traced it and added a better contour to the legs. With this new version that is smoother and more symmetrical, it’s time to make it in color.

The first concept that I had to take apart to improve it. Always hurts a bit but it was worth it. I’m making plans to share my DIE lines and make a template and tutorial anytime soon.

Thanks for checking out my work!

@op So did you just wake up one morning and think to yourself 'I want to be able to make people crap their pants, but I don't want to be there to smell it'?

The vibrating legs make this unsettling.

Isn't there a popup mechanism which could make it jump out more. Even if the spidey might be a bit smaller, the jump/lunge might make it nastier... haha.

Maybe glue the spider to the page with some weak adhesive, and then put a small spring under it. That way a few moments after you open it the spider will jump right off the page :)

A someone with arachnaphobia, I'd scream. Too fukkin real.

Yep, another arachnophobe here. The realistic spider look was very well pulled off.

Yeah, I'm not sending this to my arachie friend. Mobile phones are expensive, yo.

Even though I don't have the phobia, I appreciate that you tagged a spider for those that might have it @op. And, as usual, your work is awesome
