Just gave it a listen. It's good and I love the singer's voice but it's way too upbeat and lacks the haunting melancholy of the original. The second to last verse where it slows down a bit is better but still doesn't have the gravitas of Lightfoot's version

It was always a dangerous lake in late fall, you don't have tales from the Native Americans saying it's deadly for nothing.

As someone who has really only been around man made lakes. It blows my mind that ship capable of crossing oceans can be sunk in a lake. I understand those lakes are way bigger than I can imagine. But having never seen it I can't fully comprehend it. Hell I haven't even been on a lake big enough you couldn't see across it.

I grew up in Michigan. The Great Lakes are fucking huge. Their size still boggles my mind sometimes. I also have the opposite problem, how is this thing I can swim across, that's only 32 feet deep, called a Lake?

Because it is set up more like a river. The lakes around here are usually hundreds of deep at their deepest. But they also have hundreds of miles of shore line. It is just spread out. Never very wide but flooded river.

I think its because more people live along it than any of the other great lakes. And the title says "americans", so considering Michigan is the lake thats entirely in the US, it would make sense.

Yeah, Lake Michigan does have the population, my 5 minutes search says Canada generally cites Superior as the most deadly lake, Michigan right behind, also TIL that Lake Okanaga, is the deadliest lake in BC.

As someone who has swam in both: the reason Lake Michigan drowns more people is not because it’s a more dangerous lake, it’s because Superior is colder than a witches teet and you have to be half mad to stay in it for more than 5 minutes.
