I don’t want to make it about me because he’s the one sick but I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m already really sensitive to noise (can’t cut my own nails without itching) so every cough is like a loud bang in my ears, and it never stops. I get woken up at night by it as well so Ive only got poor quality sleep (so does he, though) since February - and that’s probably one of the reasons I’m going crazy by the day. If anyone has lit. any piece of advice I’ll be thankful for it. Thanks guys

I don't have a solution for you, but just because someone has it worse, doesnt mean you cant have your own problems as well, even if they are related or caused by someone elses. How you handle them however determines if your an asshole or not. The take away is that its ok to not be ok, and worst case if you cant make everyone happy, perhaps its your turn on your own.

Quick update: first of all, I’d like to thank everyone who replied to this post because it really helped me calm down and god knows I needed it. Also, husband went to see another GP who apparently identified what his illness was and how to treat it. He just got his new prescription and hopefully things will get better soon. Many, many thanks again Imgur people ❤️

I can't speak of your situation, I'm not in it. I can say as the unexpected caregiver for my own mother, I'd rather listen to her wheezing, coughing, and moaning about pain than to have the absence. I hate that she's suffering, but I still do what I can to keep her with me.

Earplugs. One pair.

During the day soundproof earphones and at night ear plugs.

You probably need a break from everything . It's not a crime to take care of yourself. If he has a close relative or even hire someone for a couple of days to take over for you. Go somewhere you like and treat yourself if even for a few days.

I’ve been feeling like going to the beach for the day and just sit there. Sometimes I go on business trip and I shamefully admit that these days are a relief 😔
dickblack12
Have you tried noise cancelling headphones? Also, does he have something treatable?
jomiWrecker
Yes but unfortunately I can’t keep them all day. It’s giving me really bad ear pain after a while
Skyff
All day is maybe a bit much, but if you can't wear them for a few hours without discomfort you might want to look at another brand or whether earphones or headphones are better for you. Some kinds make my ears hurt quickly while others I can wear for hours without problems.

I know right? Thanks for the advice I’ve been pushing the allergist these last few days and will look up the other thing you mentioned 🙏

As someone prone to coughing for months post infection, humidifiers may help. Steroid pump, too. Basically, it's a vicious cycle: coughing irritates the lungs, and leads to more coughing. Even if this is just allergies, there are meds and modification in environment that may help. Especially, warm mist humidifiers, and keeping humidity at least at 40+% (cheap electronic humidex measurements gadgets can be found even on Amazon).

I’m interested in this humidifier thing but when he’s taking a shower he coughs a lot. Are you sure it’s be good for him to have a more humid house ?
TiredSnowball
In the shower, other things may irritate his lungs, like perfume in shampoo or soap (right now, scent free things are probably a good idea for him, especially since allergies were mentioned). Even something as simple as the cleaner you use for bathtub mixed with humid air. So it is worth a try, as a non-ultrasonic warm humidifiers are relatively cheap.

Got it. Thanks 🙏
meganical
Yikes. And no, you’re not an asshole because you’ve handled such an irritation for eight months! That’s nearly as long as human pregnancy. Put yourself first when it comes to health because you aren’t able to help others when unwell as much as you would be able to at your best

Is sleeping in a different room an option? I snore sometimes, so my partner and I will sleep in different rooms if I'm having bad snores. We also use a white noise machine... it doesn't remove the coughing or snoring sound but makes it less jarring. But, like another user said, your husband struggling does not diminish your struggles. You are both suffering, and your hardship is still valid.

I have to have the TV on, but it keeps my wife up. I sleep in the living room like I have been since high school, and she gets the bedroom to herself. She recently got a CPAP machine and look at that, it can’t bother me.
jomiWrecker
Thanks 🙏 yes it’s indeed an option. We’ve done it a couple of times when I was really out of stamina from lack of sleep but he’s always sad when we sleep apart so 🫠😭

Your feelings and needs matter too, though.

In a previous relationship, my partner and I would often sleep in different rooms just because of our work schedules. So I'm seconding this alternative if it's possible.
jomiWrecker
Also I’m thankful everyone is suggesting earplugs and headsets but I’m on the other hand always on the lookout for like him falling or whatever might happen that I could possibly not hear if I wear these. When we sleep apart I’m always worried something happens and I’m not there to help

You can get electronic ear protection that lets normal sound through but blocks loud noises. Though his coughing might not be loud enough to meet the cutoff.
jomiWrecker
Oh believe me it’s loud. I will try one of my earbuds set since I recently noticed there was an intelligent ear protection feature last time I was on the streets and a crazy man starting yelling at people. I heard everything fine but each time he yelled it was muffled. Might be a solution for a couple of hours during the day (can’t keep them on longer)
unclefisty
There are models designed to go on your ears and others designed to go in your ears. So you can get whichever feels most comfortable to you, or get both and alternate.
