I remember seeing this movie a long time ago and I hated it then. Can't remember anything about it and decided to search for it after seeing this post. It is free to watch on YouTube. I'm going to see how far I can get before deciding to not watch it anymore.
I choose to believe that Norm recognized how uncomfortable Courtney Thorne-Smith was in that chair, promoting that movie, and so chose to draw attention off of her. In her own words, "I was not thrilled about having to do it, so when Norm took over, I'm like, Oh, thank you, God and Norm Macdonald. It was a blessing."
Bob Saget was attempting to tell the story about the time he saw legendary entertainer, Dean Martin in a restaurant in Hollywood back in the day, not long after Martin’s son had died as in “He had just lost his son.”So he approached Martin, hoping to offer some words of comfort.
But then Norm interrupts him with that devastatingly funny but also totally inappropriate quip. And you can see from the look on Saget‘s face that even he thinks it’s funny but he probably shouldn’t laugh.
The movie also scored 11% on Rotten Tomatoes and resulted in Carrot Top being nominated for Worst New Star, and Raquel Welch being nominated for Worst Supporting Actress at the 1998 Golden Raspberry Awards.
You really really don't. But if you do you really have to commit to riffing on it. Don't put it on your second monitor while you're playing roller coaster tycoon 2 gold edition.
There's a joke about Carrot Top being the extra zero based on the theme of puns and put downs. But truthfully every time I've watched Carrot Top, I always enjoyed his act.
Never seen him outside of random show/movie appearances and even then I feel like that was only like 3 times max. I feel like I only know of his existence because of people making fun of or referencing him
Low expectations probably works in his favor. I remember he was funny when he was young. Prop stuff can be cornball stupid unless you have the comedic timing. That's how he and Pee Wee made careers out of it
Not completely but his stand up act used a lot. Playhouse and his movies are extensions of that. Of course, that was just one of Paul Reuben's characters.
I did a meet & greet with him back in the 90's and dude was just a stick figure with red hair. The first time I saw him after he bulked up I thought it was a plastic muscle suit. He looks like a Stretch Armstrong doll now.
ioncewBaroness

The 90s were a hell of a drug
OnlyOneArman
And Carrot Top was on that drug
WiiShaker
Rest in power, Norm.
jfitz
I never heard of her in my life, Norm must have laid a curse on her or something
stouffer
Conan has to look at his cue card to recall her name. He doesn't even recognise her when she's his guest!
thebonesofmyancestors
Really? She was pretty damn famous for awhile. Melrose Place, Ally McBeal, According to Jim, Two and Half Men.
Burgundee
She had moderate success as the wife on According To Jim for 8 seasons. She was also on Ally McBeal and Two And A Half Men for quite a while too.

Context?
RevengeIsIceCream
Dean Martin is the person he's talking about, and he had recently lost his son.

Apparently having the film roasted by Norm was considered a highlight of hers. She viewed it as Norm saving her from having to promote the flick.
getadogupya
Did he get her a gig on his show because he felt bad for torpedoing her film career?

khaoselement
Pretty sure getting roasted by Norm would be the highlight for a lot of people.
SF0X
Norm can zing on the spot. I bet he’s zinging them wherever he is now.

He lives and zings through all he inspired.

Hell. Because God fuckin loves Carrot Top.

For reference, Chairman of the Board grossed $181,233.
That's not missing any zeros.
CP3oh
Never saw the movie, but it struck me as a movie in a genre that Paulie Shore had already completely exhausted.
drakkaris12718
Adjusting for inflation it made more than most of what is coming out of Marvel and Disney lately.

He was phenomenal on Kill Tony. He has such a positive vibe.
stabthecrab
Carrot top is killing it out in Vegas. Him and Shania Twain hang out
Rkfinecake

garbuhj
Peewee uses some props, but he's mainly not a prop comic
Rkfinecake
Not completely but his stand up act used a lot. Playhouse and his movies are extensions of that. Of course, that was just one of Paul Reuben's characters.
bloodtaker3
The guy has such a weird vibe.
It's unsettling
Macetheace50
Is it because he dyes his hair Pumpkin ORANGE?
Howlingowl
I miss when he wasn’t freakishly jacked and I was only creeped out by his hair, his freckles and his act.
UltraHellboy
Maybe it’s the excessive plastic surgery or unnecessary body mass…
hfctom
I did a meet & greet with him back in the 90's and dude was just a stick figure with red hair. The first time I saw him after he bulked up I thought it was a plastic muscle suit. He looks like a Stretch Armstrong doll now.
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
So unsettling! Can't put my finger on why, but he creeps me out a bit
BreakablePotato
Back then he looked like a ventriloquist dummy moving on its own. Now he looks like upholstery. Uncanny valley in either iteration.

Bigotry against red hair??
SupernaturalReactions
Bigotry? Or an evolutionary defense mechanism against soulless, predatory simulacrums who mimic the humans they prey upon?
