Compact discs are making an unexpected comeback, with Gen Z driving the fastest growth in physical music sales - despite many young buyers not even owning a CD player.

According to Luminate's 2026 Midyear Report, CD sales jumped 16% in the first half of 2026, reaching 16.3 million units. Vinyl, by comparison, grew just 2.4%. Even after removing K-Pop from the data, CD sales still increased 6.7%, showing the resurgence extends well beyond a single genre.

Much of the momentum has been fueled by K-Pop, where albums have evolved into premium collectibles. BTS's 10th studio album ARIRANG ranked among the year's best-selling CDs, while groups like ENHYPEN and ATEEZ boosted sales with deluxe packaging, exclusive photo cards, and retailer-only editions designed for collectors.

The revival isn't limited to CDs. Combined sales of vinyl records, CDs, and cassette tapes reached 38.2 million units in the United States during the first half of 2026, up 7.8% from a year earlier, suggesting that physical music formats continue to thrive alongside streaming.

Listening habits are shifting, too. Luminate found that 60% of Gen Z listeners now say they most frequently listen to music released in the 1990s or earlier - up dramatically from just 18% in 2021. That nostalgia is translating into renewed demand for vintage music formats.

While independent record stores remain the biggest sellers of physical albums, major retailers like Target and Walmart now account for nearly 30% of all physical music sales.

Ironically, many of the CDs being sold today are never actually played. With disc drives disappearing from laptops, cars, and home audio systems, many Gen Z fans are buying albums as collectibles and memorabilia rather than as a way to listen to music....
