When Balogun got that nonsense red card, it was the first time I was fired up for Team USA, going into today's game. Trump's bullshit has soured me.
As a law-man, though, if Messi didn't get red card for similar contact (or even a yellow?), and Ronaldo had his red card violent act penalization deferred so he wouldn't miss a World Cup game, wouldn't it be more consistent for FIFA to review Balogun's red card and possibly defer it, instead of doing nothing while Messi and Ronaldo 1/X

get to 'get away with it'? I'm not a big soccer watcher, usually only for World Cup, so this question is coming from a good place, not someone who is siding with Trump or FIFA. I usually prefer similar inputs to have similar outputs, so the Messi/Ronaldo examples are in conflict, conceptually, with Balogun situation for me.
Like if Trump didn't walk around saying he made the red card go away, and FIFA just decided to do it themselves, would it still be such a gigantic deal? 2/2

A) Simply because those people have found a new life in Belgium doesn't mean racism in Belgium is eliminated, nor does it excuse what Leopold II and the Belgian imperialists did. A US player got a red card in their last game, so shouldn't be able to play in the game against Belgium, but Trump called the FIFA president to "reconsider" the red card, and then FIFA suspended the red card so the player can play. It was a bullshit red card, given by a ref who has previously been investigated for showing partiality. As much as I hate that Trump got stuck his nose in to get the rules bent, it was a shit call to start with so I pretty well view this as the right outcome.

Teams have to deal with "bullshit" calls all the time. Two wrongs don't make a right, so Trump ruined the outcome by affecting it, even if that otherwise would've been the correct thing to do. Don't let your fandom override right and wrong.

It is one match because it was accidental. If it was intentional we would be looking at 2 to 4 matches at minimum. It was a very dangerous play and as such, it is a red card.

Sorry, I'm going to root for the US tonight. I may hate DJT and am totally not surprised that he inserted himself into the discourse, and FIFA, corrupt as it is, happily obliged. But I still want our players to win. I recognize that the rules say a ban is warranted, but this is a prime example of that rule is dumb. Suspend players after the match if the foul is egregious. Our player was clearly going for the ball.

Maybe you misunderstood me - I have no problem with the player being ejected for the current game. That seems fair. My point is after the current game is when they should determine whether further suspension is warranted. Not automatic. But I guess it doesn't really matter now. We got smoked, and watching the game, it didn't even seem close. Belgium clearly was the better team last night.

Nah. If two yellows in 2 (interspersed) matches means skipping a game, then an instant-red should definitely mean skipping a game. Otherwise you'd see a lot more "plausible deniability red" at the end of a match because there's no real cost involves for the offenders. You can argue 2 x yellow means discussing. You can argue that a specific red shoukd have been a yellow. But an instant red should be an instant ban.

I was fine with our player being out of the Bosnia game cause of the red. I just think that instead of the next game suspension being automatic, it should be reviewed. And then increased or eliminated based upon circumstances. But it's all academic now, anyways.

They do review it, and they can then increase the amount of match bans. They shouldn't eliminate consequences. That'd be like, oh I don't know, being convicted of 34 felonies, getting an unconditional discharge basically saying "time served in this round is enough punishment", and just keeping on truxking. You had strong opinions on the rule but now it's "all academic"? No it isn't; this impacts future matches - you're just using defeat as a copout for lacking an argument besides "our team".
