it was basically the "tree of thinking you know better than god himself" and fuck if that isnt a sin many "holy" men are guilty of
tyrsfavoritesword
I've heard it argued that it was the tree of knowledge including the knowledge of sin, if we didn't eat it we would have no knowledge of sin
You're right though. And Christians don't follow Jesus, or there'd be no established churches.
As a quaker (member of religious society of friends) I'd say we wouldn't have clergy or established leadership. We could still have churches
Shit... I forgot about y'all... you're right but rare. And to my knowledge not in texas... we should fix that.
Me too tho. Controversial take: I think slavery is wrong.
So that's a case of supposed holy men telling you what god said. The old testament was passed down so many times is basically hearsay
I mean the pro slavery thing being hearsay. Jesus said to love your fellow man and treat others as you want to be treated that anti slavery
Buddy, by that logic the entire Bible is hearsay. Which is of course what it is, but not to believers.
Jesus could have told his followers right then that slavery was wrong, and didn't. And in the new testament it tells slaves of Christians
Phobetor42

Right? That's what I realised after being raised in a super fundamentalist sect. He designed them, he'd know they'd do it. It's all nonsense
Kittynomnoms
Yep. Thinking that free will can exist when there's an omniscient being involved just means you don't understand the concept of omniscience.
...she said twice, but didn't care to explain.
Plus, and this is a big one, why create it in the first place? Why put it next to them in a near infinite universe. And why lie to them
about what would happen if they ate from it - he said 'you'd surely die', but it was ininitely more punitive than that. You can really tell
that they had no concept of the omnipotent, omniscient god when this was written. The evolution of mythology.
...and as a creator created them to do.
Plus why create the thing in the first place? And why put it next to people instead of say the Triangulum galaxy. shit's fucked up yo

This ignores free will; a gift and ultimately a test. It's a major tenet of Christianity, we are free to make our own choices, good or bad.
Note; I'm agnostic. I don't follow Christianity or believe in it, but I try to understand the moral questions it poses and why they're asked
There's no such thing as free will, sorry.
No. For the last time: an omniscient god means there can't be free will.
A bit passive aggressive. Care to explain your statement?
No matter what we are going to do, god already knows all our decisions before we're even born.
Yep. Not understanding that means you don't actually understand what omniscient means.
I could say the same to you, see omniscience and freewill; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_free_will

Some of the worlds top theologians are incredibly intelligent
LackadasicalGoblin
Always has. Answers that cant be questioned are a religion's bread and butter... or tithe... or virgin sacrifice...
TomBrokaw
This explains so much about MAGAs
LordElups
It really does
TheNamiKage
Man ya know some idiot magat is going to make that logical leap, trump loves the poorly educated, god loves the poorly educated, therefore 1
TheNamiKage
Trump is god. Makes me want to vomit just thinking about it. 2/2
LackadasicalGoblin
They did make the leap. Dont forget the gold statue (rather cartoonish looking) at CPAC
maskedrabbit
it was basically the "tree of thinking you know better than god himself" and fuck if that isnt a sin many "holy" men are guilty of
tyrsfavoritesword
I've heard it argued that it was the tree of knowledge including the knowledge of sin, if we didn't eat it we would have no knowledge of sin
tyrsfavoritesword
You're right though. And Christians don't follow Jesus, or there'd be no established churches.
maskedrabbit
As a quaker (member of religious society of friends) I'd say we wouldn't have clergy or established leadership. We could still have churches
tyrsfavoritesword
Shit... I forgot about y'all... you're right but rare. And to my knowledge not in texas... we should fix that.
DarthVaderDidNothingWrong
Me too tho. Controversial take: I think slavery is wrong.
maskedrabbit
So that's a case of supposed holy men telling you what god said. The old testament was passed down so many times is basically hearsay
maskedrabbit
I mean the pro slavery thing being hearsay. Jesus said to love your fellow man and treat others as you want to be treated that anti slavery
DarthVaderDidNothingWrong
Buddy, by that logic the entire Bible is hearsay. Which is of course what it is, but not to believers.
Attaroo
Jesus could have told his followers right then that slavery was wrong, and didn't. And in the new testament it tells slaves of Christians
Phobetor42
Something as an apparently omniscient being he knew they were going to do anyway.
graehall
Right? That's what I realised after being raised in a super fundamentalist sect. He designed them, he'd know they'd do it. It's all nonsense
Kittynomnoms
Yep. Thinking that free will can exist when there's an omniscient being involved just means you don't understand the concept of omniscience.
DarthVaderDidNothingWrong
...she said twice, but didn't care to explain.
Attaroo
Plus, and this is a big one, why create it in the first place? Why put it next to them in a near infinite universe. And why lie to them
Attaroo
about what would happen if they ate from it - he said 'you'd surely die', but it was ininitely more punitive than that. You can really tell
Attaroo
that they had no concept of the omnipotent, omniscient god when this was written. The evolution of mythology.
DarthVaderDidNothingWrong
...and as a creator created them to do.
Attaroo
Plus why create the thing in the first place? And why put it next to people instead of say the Triangulum galaxy. shit's fucked up yo
DatDarthCaedus
Then the first humans left the garden, and they had two sons, who in turn had more children with someo... oh. Oh God, no.
DarthVaderDidNothingWrong
One long line of incest. But then the flood, and after that Noah and... oh. No. Not again.
tyrsfavoritesword
Mmmm drunken Ham.... oh no... not him too
LackadasicalGoblin
"Dont you dare do what i know you will do and designed you to do..."

MrNecrophile
This ignores free will; a gift and ultimately a test. It's a major tenet of Christianity, we are free to make our own choices, good or bad.
MrNecrophile
Note; I'm agnostic. I don't follow Christianity or believe in it, but I try to understand the moral questions it poses and why they're asked
DarthVaderDidNothingWrong
There's no such thing as free will, sorry.
SexGolem
No. For the last time: an omniscient god means there can't be free will.
MrNecrophile
A bit passive aggressive. Care to explain your statement?
Ghalagor
No matter what we are going to do, god already knows all our decisions before we're even born.
Kittynomnoms
Yep. Not understanding that means you don't actually understand what omniscient means.
MrNecrophile
I could say the same to you, see omniscience and freewill; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_free_will
