The latest boneheaded move by a streaming platform.
This is just cable 2.0. To be able to watch everything you want, you'll end up having to subscribe to a plethora of streaming services and end up paying as much or more than you did for cable.
Streaming was supposed to give us more options, freedom and save us money, but it's doing the opposite.
t00tie
20TB drives are pretty affordable. I can remember when 20MB were big HDDs :/
qtRaven
HeyOP
Streaming services aren't costing me any money, and have definitely provided me with a lot more options that I'm not taking.
FireSolvesProblems
JanglesPrime
Thefaxe
My problem with Crunchyroll is the extremely limited options it offer in my country. i mean why should i pay for it doesnt have what i want.
Startjim
Sorry, this video is not available in your region due to licensing restrictions. this is for every show i want to watch (piracy anyone?)
Alomega
YO HO!
Kolumbuskris
It's only 5 quid a month. Besides it was basically unwatchable as a free site, there'd be 15 minutes of ads either side of an episode

3RsReadingRitingRithmatic
I don't agree with it. But I'm not surprised especially since they are merging of the largest networks into 1 paid subscription. 1/?
3RsReadingRitingRithmatic
I paid for both for a short time strictly on convenience and didn't have cable. People complain about too many options, they fix that 2/?
3RsReadingRitingRithmatic
But didn't let me keep my free stuff after doubling their library? This is better than HI dive leaving CR making their own paid only app.3/3
EdgarDruin
It’s like some of you have never paid $160 / month for absolute shit. 300 channels of nothing you want to watch. I pay far, far less now.
DanaConti5
The new generations never had a cord to cut.
EdgarDruin
And I find something nightly, watching what I want, when I want.
encrypteddecryption
Streaming was never supposed to do these things. It was always about siphoning customers from cable then screwing them just as bad.
FatBastardVegetarian
Cut the cord... blah, blah, blah...
RadleyCunningham
Remember when these companies lobbied against streaming when they didn't have their hands in it?
seyne
Especially dumb because fan-subs are often miles better than the streaming service ones (mostly because they are better staffed)
KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler
Fan subs are way edgier and super inaccurate a lot of the time
Beattywill80
Welcome to the crew
disposabledom
Imgur: [screaming] SUPPORT ARTISTS!!! Also Imgur: There's no fuckin way I'm paying for any of my music/tv/movies/comics/books!!
CaveHunter3000
This isn’t supporting artists though it’s literally just supporting executive pockets
fennecbutt
"have to pay for it" "making it more difficult to watch stuff legally" uh, yeah, you have to pay for stuff? They don't have to let you watch
fennecbutt
With ads.
Vendura
Old habits die hard i guess
RARusk
Is that Bruce Willis' next movie?
Bezaid
I remember when Crunchyroll wasn't even legit. They got hit with takedowns a bunch, then worked out a licensing deal w/ the studios.
BallsDeepinaDragonscloaca
Crunchyroll has literally never improved their streaming since they launched back in the early '00s.
nugenki
Oh wow, right after the merger with Funimation too. Anime and manga has always been a highly pirated medium
Atlasraven
because of 1) lack of legal availability 2) the pirate community offers quicker and higher quality service
Evo435
Disclaimer I don't know if this is the case; if the ads aren't enough to cover hosting/licensing costs they don't have a choice >
martineb72
The problem is that their ads are very easy to skip. Any adblocker can skip them. That plus their ads repeat ad nauseam.
Evo435
< but to get rid of the free option.
TheOnlyPtylerdactyl
I dunno. Anime, comics, books, and manga, I'll always gladly pay for. Localization costs money and I want to support it so there's more.
Aerolus
the only way to buy one piece legally in my area is from microsoft for $24 per season
fknbastard
I’m sure there will be subscribers but will it be enough to keep it alive? We’re they losing money or just want more?
TheOnlyPtylerdactyl
Couldn't say, tbh. All I know is that companies have people whose job it is to cost benefit this stuff.
rayhatesu
Considering the greater majority of ads they showed were for their own premium service, ad space likely wasn't selling well.
TheOnlyPtylerdactyl
Like, pirate if you want, but don't be surprised if they decide there isn't enough money in it and a series ends unfinished.
Ihmislehma
I'd pay for it - if I could. I'd even scrunge up money if there was one central place for streaming. But there ain't.
BlueDsc
Yeah, I'll happily pay for it. So much niche stuff even gets dubbed nowadays. When I was a kid most of it would never come here.
TacticalSpoon
When I was a kid there were already fansub groups subbing most good unlicensed shows. Just pay 2 way shipping on a giant box of VHS.
TheOnlyPtylerdactyl
When I was a kid we had three shows lol... people today do not understand how good they have it
BlueDsc
Yip. Now's an especially good time if you're a yuri or yaoi fan. They're still more niche but some of it is even getting dubs now.
BlueDsc
Back when I was a kid though? Hell naw. Gays were the devil and all that stupid shit.
Imnotcanadiandammit
Speaking as someone subbed to both CR and Funi, you definitely shouldn’t check a website named animesuge which doesn’t have a .to extension
ministerm
. .
putinbabykiller
Virus website.
uniqueflowsnake
also stay away from places like 9anime. *wink wink nudge
LdaQuirm
.
whodathunkit
I definitely "won't" check out that website.
kmshinkiro
.
Rtrice
I believe CR bought funi and it'll now be under 1 roof, probably why they now need to eliminate free / ad-supported
Calvin1722

TakamiStitches
.
tantallous
Most of the sites I used before for streaming have either gone away or are full of malware and sketchy shit. It isn't that much for a sub,
tantallous
and they have most of the shows for each season, so meh.
Imnotcanadiandammit
I only use it to know when episodes release instead of having to check two separate websites, I swear, the uncensored stuff’s for weebs!
Imnotcanadiandammit
jherazob
Hmmm, suspicious...
TheMonsterKing
nyaa provides
MyUsernameIsMyPassword
Honestly torretung is just not for all, sites like Zoro exists which is already ad free and they add anime daily
TheMonsterKing
streamin is def useful in some situations but i'm always a little wary of stream sites, both for how they make $ and that they might vanish
DamascusFire
Nyaahahaha
IhopeyougetstageIIIcoloncancer
It baffles me how Nyaa can be so well designed AND have no spam, ads, or popups.
GasBandit
Because it's run by enthusiasts who aren't looking to monetize every aspect of human existence.
IhopeyougetstageIIIcoloncancer
I know, and I respect them for it. I'm just in awe there are still such groups left after all these decades.
NaughtButOne
For all the flak the internet gives them, weebs and furries keep us in the comfort to which we've become accustomed.
xizar
but sukebei quenches.
AntiProtonBoy
jackhammer0027
Good to know. Gonna check it out later
Dukeboysz
Just wish the filters would work. Otherwise its fantastic.
WTexasStoner
That goes double for me : nyaa nyaa!
darkwing42101
mektel
Oh, it's like eztv but for anime.
Fengor
Wasn't eztv hijacked by the Italian mafia a few years ago, and is not at all a safe website anymore?
WagonOfSolidMonekys
.
gottakeepgoing
Damn weeb mobsters.
PrincessLeliana
"How can we make more money" "stop free service and ads?" "genius" "wait why are they not subscribing?"
KinnusKitchen
You would think this would work, but time and time again it's been proven people will still pay.
Ronin42
What happens when Sony buys your service
ProphetOfPhil
Wcostream.com is where I watch all my anime usually. I can't stand the layout of crunchyroll.
IMakeLotsOfReferencesAndRemakes
Free service with ads was them selling your data to advertisers. If you aren't paying for it directly there is always a reason. Also guys1/2
IMakeLotsOfReferencesAndRemakes
the videos have been downloadable for years and there is a number of other free anime sources like Tubi.tv 2/2
froggy2x4
This is why I have special apps for this
jayman0123
4tb NAS. Never looked back
Matty3D
Homemade fileserver here with over 20TB of storage. One of the best investments I've made for media.
370zSteve
Recently built 10x 16TB server. The point of no return.
Nivvi
They will put in basic sub $5/mo with ads and $10/m without ads
TheFastpaws
So many services are doing that now and I hope all of them rot in hell.
hjf2011
I'm subbed to CR.. it's about 70c USD per month. I'm not in the US so maybe that's it. IDK how much it costs there hah. (i'm on the trial,
hjf2011
binging for the past few days. but I may cancel before the charge, I'm not sure yet.)
dustygamedev
Which sucks because I pay $5/mo for funimation and they're merging with crunchyroll. I was under the impression i would be paying the same.
jennym123
How are you paying $5 for funimation? I have a grandfathered account and I'm paying $7.
dustygamedev
Sorry, apparently I pay $5.99. that's usd if it makes a difference, otherwise can't tell you why it's less.
PrincessLeliana
watch how many people want to pay a monthly fee and still have ads.
HedonistBeard
Far too many sadly. Hulu has ads - even on occasion in their ad free tier - and people even defend it when called out.
AnimalGenetaliaAudioClues
The reason alone is why I had Hulu for exactly 11 mins. That was years ago and I’ll never give them another chance.
Sensiblyinteresting
If you watch a 30 min tv show on Hulu for 11 mins, 3 of it was ads.
AnimalGenetaliaAudioClues
I didn’t finish the show. First commercial break I closed it and canceled sub.
Nivvi
Stupidity of execs know no bounds, they are so far removed from normal society and full of greed. There is enough weebs that will sub
lncorrectGrammerNazi
Weebs know how to find the content they're looking for without paying. I've got Funimation myself, but I'm a part of a nice account sharing…
lncorrectGrammerNazi
…group. Those who can't contribute login info of their own pay a portion of the costs. I save money and end up having wider access to…
RareGoomba
Don't you guys have disposable income?
HeroThatWasNeeded
Reminds me of "Don't you guys have phones?"
cozynester
idk I do that for Hulu and then just use an ad block ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
TheYoungerChrisEvans
I just pirate
caledric
I didn't even know hulu had commercials until I watched it via my TV instead of my computer
[deleted]

manulofdoom
Are you stupid?
cozynester
lmao checking out your comment history you're just a troll with nothing positive to contribute to the community sooo... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
iamthugnasty
I've said it before. We have basically come full circle back to cable. You have to pay for every service or "chanel" you want. Anything free
Snotty128
You can subscribe to streaming services a month at a time. Subscribe to one, cancel it. Subscribe to another the next month
hardytardigrade
Chanel #5 is particularly expensive
iamthugnasty
Is about half ads. Often stuff you pay for has at least some form of advertising. And prices will go up with little to no warning.
Zeddicuszull
The huge upside is that streaming services are not being used to fund fox.
iamthugnasty
*yet
3RsReadingRitingRithmatic
Except in this instance. Where crunchyroll, funimation, and wakanim are merging into 1 paid service instead of 3 with different shows.
jennym123
Agreed. This is absolutely for the best. Even if the Crunchyroll player is hot garbage.
3RsReadingRitingRithmatic
I've got VRV which has CR. Idk if they're the same but other than how awfully they catalog their shows, it's a decent player.
FullHeart
you should try using the CR player on anything less than ideal internet, like a phone. The cache buffer is so small that you basically ->
FullHeart
-> just cycle between 10 seconds of buffering, 2 seconds of playing, 10 seconds buffering, 2 seconds playing. It doesnt preload far enough
Scorch052
Ngl this post comes off as just rly entitled. If they can't keep the platform running off ad revenue, I don't see what choice they have.
fennecbutt
Yup, exactly. Same as people bitching about ads on YT and the audacity of YT to offer premium to get rid of ads. Ugh, paying for a service,
fennecbutt
Such an outrage! If Google did one thing wrong it was getting people too used to getting shit for free.
Scorch052
I know the impulse of "muh greedy corp" but I could absolutely see ad revenue alone being insufficient to maintain such a large platform.
KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler
And people use ad block on it .so they get 0 revenue
TheOnlyPtylerdactyl
It's way different than Netflix's constant price hikes and cancelling of shows tbh. Anime is really expensive to produce and translate.
Spartan04
Agreed. Plus to me it’s also worth paying to get ad-free. Better than cable where you pay for it and still get ads.
yhellothargoodsir
dont forget devs of ad blocking browser extensions actively keeping lists up-to-date to block ads. I havent seen an ad on CR in years.
Textuality
Yeah, same here. I haven't seen ads on CR, youtube, or most other sites in ages.
PeakExponent
I whitelisted CR for a while, but their 30/60s ads had a tendency to end up with an unskippable 7m30s ad afterwords.
PeakExponent
or they'd go (ad 1/3), (ad 2/3), (ad 3/3), and jump right back to ads (ad 1/4), (ad 2/4), (ad 3/4)... It was too much.
butthurtnevergetsbetter
It's disappointing that the very people who are supposed to specialize in bringing money to content publishers are this bad at it.
VaultGirl69
That's true. I have literally not seen a Crunchy Roll ad in years. Need to turn over their marketing department. Goddamn.
DeadeicPrints
They likely weren't making much if any money from the ad content. Maybe they are greedy fucks, but with adblock, VPNs, it was probably more-
NoNameFred
When watching stuff on Crunchroll, at least half of the ads I saw were for "Crunchyroll Premium". That suggests their ad space didn't sell…
DeadeicPrints
Pretty much. Anime is very popular now but I'm not sure how many marketers caught on to that. The free version was likely losing money.
NoNameFred
Or, at least, not making as much money as Sony hoped when they bought Crunchyroll last year… "Time to cut open the golden goose!"
DeadeicPrints
Maybe. But I cannot believe that the free version made any money. Think about what happens any time someone brings up YouTube ads.
DeadeicPrints
-cost effective just to end it. I highly doubt many ppl were putting up with their ads and were likely already pirating.
Couldicareless
I wouldnt mind paying if the service wasn’t shit
mooncactus
Yeah. It has more options for me than funimation, but the apps are SHIT. The Xbox one is semi useable, roku? No fucking chance
PorneliusHubertII
Main reason I hate paying for hbo max. Worst streaming service ever.. constantly crashing and freezing.
ContinuallySenseless
Not crashing for me, but I need at least 3 tries to get a video started... It's fucking ridiculous :/
Startjim
Sorry, this video is not available in your region due to licensing restrictions.
yoyo42
I *am* paying but I seem to be seeing more and more ads these days, lots of them unskippable.
Morpheous
On Crunchyroll...? Are you sure you haven't accidentally logged out?
yoyo42
No, for some of the big streamers.
Ronin42
I run it on an outdated roku and on my phone with no issues.
rococosbasilisk
VRV is way better but it’s more expensive so not sure if worth it. Feels like crunchy gave up on the main site
Marceline
Haven't had any issues with it so far, but I'm running the beta website
xizar
I hate the beta website. I hate that, as a subscriber, I was forced into it.
Arenlor
I've never had issues with it, and have used it for years, before the beta existed.
tantallous
I really dislike the beta site, everything was moved around and still haven't found where they put the 'recently aired' list.
BluLuna
No issues on the website and the PS4 for me. Crashes on the PS3 but I don't really use that anymore.
Marceline
Also, assuming they don't jack up the prices, the cheapest option for CR is like half of all the others iirc
Couldicareless
The apps on my phone and xbox wont stream half the time. I could use the website but part of the reason one pays is for convenience.
gravyandfries
Have you done a hard reset of your phone? An cleared the app cache? Might help.
Couldicareless
I already deleted it, but i try it every couple of months and its usually the same. I think they just don’t care as much about the apps.
ChuckTingleBattlesTheAssGoblinsofAuschwitz
Better than Funimation but geez, Crunchy is run by toddlers.
KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler
Funimation s was better
CaveHunter3000
That’s the neat part; they are now the same company
ScourgeOfAges
Well I have good news and bad news
voydkastor
cosonfused
their Wakanim brand is pure concentrated toddlershit.
GozerTheGozerian
Honestly, I liked Funimation's stream more, put in preferences and did everything for you practically. Crunchy is a navigation hellscape.
ScourgeOfAges
That is true
vDorothyv
I hated the buggy-ness of Funimation
