Thought about all this insanity. Here in the EU, they made cigarettes so expensive in the hope of stopping people from smoking. Maybe exorbitant prices on soda cans will stop the obesity problem in America

They added annual multiplicative taxes on cigarettes here also, except it has absolutely nothing to do with nonsense about "protecting the children" it's about maintaining tax revenue; smoking rates decline -> taxes must go up to maintain revenue stream.

I just stopped buying. Switched to the kroger brand 2 liters that cost a buck. Still inflated (they used to be 50 cents a few years ago), but whatever. Prices are fuckin nutty on so much shit.

You could also stop buying soda entirely. The store brand version of mio stupid cheap. Plus you can get a water bottle to reuse. Less waste as well. Oh and the have caffeinated versions.

I'm trying to cut back on artificial sweeteners. High fruc corn syrup isn't great either, but between the two I think it's easier to just try to drink sugar but drink less -vs- drinking artificial stuff.

In 2010, a 12 pack of Soda was $2.50 regularly and quite often in sale for 5 or 6 for 10.
A load of bread was $1
Today, a 12 pack is running about $9.50 - I've seen it as high as $11.69 and the same bread is $4.50 to $5.50 depending on the store.
I made minimum wage then, and it hasn't gone up since right about then, I wanna say 2011.

A few months ago I did the same on an online order I made during covid. From July 2020 to July 2026, the same groceries were way more than twice as expensive. From $62 to almost $150.

You are correct that 15% for 6 years would have the price increased to $159.37 ≈ $158.30 (slightly less than 15%, at 14.871% would get you that $158.30) I know people would like to see /s on all sarcastic posts, but I don't always include it. right, but there's something somewhat insidious about even a 15% increase in price. Oh, that item of food that goes for $4? well, a 15% increase now puts it at... $4.60! Oooo scary! (not) ppl tolerate that, it's _only_ 60 extra cents, no big deal. but that's on _all_ things, but it's harder to notice cuz the individual objects yer putting into yer cart don't give you sticker shock. and once yer at the register, well, yer already committed, might as well purchase it; you still need it, anyways

I'd be surprised if they care, their whole business model is kill all regional competitors, and subsidize their payroll with tax dollars by lobbying for low income assistance and then setting their compensation specifically to insure store employees qualify and even assist them in applying for the food stamps they will be able to use at Walmart to be able to eat enough to live.

Dead Peasants Insurance, its where they take life insurance out on active military, disabled, and unwell employees so that when you die they make bank. They get to keep it even after you aren't employed by them. There are some newer regulations on it but it's still allowed. Alot of companies have or continue the practice.

Not only have prices increased but portions have decreased as well. I have several items I purchased over the years and noticed they are smaller by 2-4 ounces but the price is higher.

This is a whole thing with cake mix going from a long long time 18oz to 15oz or smaller over the years. All those family recipes using "1 box of cake mix" as an ingredient are off now and don't come out the same

And it's not just food. I have sets of ratcheting tie downs and shelving units that I purchased at Home Depot a few years apart. Same model, same manufacturer, same version, roughly the same price, but there are quantifiable downgrades in material. The hooks on the ratchets are made of a thinner gauge metal and the shelving units are missing a few extra supports.

Aldi this year replaced my favorite snack they carried, beef jerky sticks, with 60% beef, 40% pork. This has the unfortunate side effect of making the entire jerky stick Have a horrible disgusting texture plus it introduces lumps of gristle.
