The battle flag of northern Virginia represented rebellion and dissatisfaction with the government well before the civil rights movement.

As a southerner, I grew up with the flag symbolizing rebellion and The South. That was about as deep as it got.
Why did the South rebel again? It wasn't states rights, they loved using the federal government to enforce slavery.
Yeah. It was their lifestyle and economy, and the representation issue made southern states feel manipulated by other states.
So slavery, slavery, and something that wasn't a problem. Indeed they were overrepresented due to the 3/5ths rule.
I grew up in CA and that was my thought as well, honestly, just the South and rebellion.
captainikag
Rebellion against the civil rights movement is pretty racist actually.

First, you're applying modern ethics to a period in which they did not yet exist which is unfair. Secondly, even by the standards of the 1/?

The relocation was also, technically, the invasion of a foreign nation, so there's the aggression.
To be fair, SC had seceded 6 days earlier when Anderson relocated the 1st artillery companies E &C to Sumter on his own initiative. And 1
2 refused numerous pleas for peaceful surrender of the fort that would have been a threat to the harbor that no nation would have tolerated
