As a vet, tiny octopus thinks that the second Awakening comes when you realize that you weren't really fighting for freedom for all. You were defending the American way of life, which has some great things no doubt, but also includes things like colonialism, oppression, corporations being given rights, and all those things that come from people interpreting the constitution for the benefit of their sponsors.

It goes farther back than that. The American Revolution was about the upper class paying taxes to England. For the majority of people, taxes didn't change, it was just who they paid it to that changed.
Heck, even the Boston Tea Party was because businesses that made profit by undercutting pricey British tea were going to go under because the Tea Act allowed the East India Co. to drastically lower their prices, so people would buy the better quality British tea instead of smuggled Dutch Tea.

I signed up because I needed a way out. I aged out of the foster care system and graduated high school and as a foster kid, I fell through the cracks when it came to college prep and applying for student aid and all that. So it was either be homeless and somehow try to learn all the things that you should know to live on your own, or join the military. I chose the military.

After I joined, I stayed because I found a family in my teammates. I got out because I got disillusioned by how the military handled the death of two of them, and self-destructed a bit. Ended up laying hands on a butter bar who didn't know when to walk away, left some marks, and because of who his dad was, got a summary and an OTH. That sort of screwed me, but I'm a better person now.

There was a period of time in the 90s when people generally thought military service was a low risk way to get an education without ever having to see combat. Before 9/11 was a different time. I remember one guy going awol and suing the military when they tried to ship him to Iraq.
