I signed up because I needed a way out. I aged out of the foster care system and graduated high school and as a foster kid, I fell through the cracks when it came to college prep and applying for student aid and all that. So it was either be homeless and somehow try to learn all the things that you should know to live on your own, or join the military. I chose the military.
After I joined, I stayed because I found a family in my teammates. I got out because I got disillusioned by how the military handled the death of two of them, and self-destructed a bit. Ended up laying hands on a butter bar who didn't know when to walk away, left some marks, and because of who his dad was, got a summary and an OTH. That sort of screwed me, but I'm a better person now.
Anybody who signed up for the US military after Vietnam was either a naive fool or someone who was okay with killing people for money. Because that's what the US military was about since - at the very latest - Vietnam.
