There was decent electric cars in the 90s but oil companies and car companies purposely buried them. They even stopped legislation in places like California that would have forced development into them and solar.
So instead we are only now doing it but outside of China? They are all super expensive and most can’t afford them. Nor are we helping poor people to get even a used one.

Reminds me of 5 years ago when in my home province of British Columbia(Canada just north of Washington state), we broke records hitting just under 50C, over 121F, and we had over 600 deaths, also much of our forest boiled to death, the only northern rainforest prior to it losing that status recently from climate change.
Also it coincided with low tide and boiled our whole tidal zone to death, literally collapsed the ecosystem, goodbye native mussel species.
It rarely got past 24C here as a kid.

One country enacting strict carbon limits won’t make any difference if the rest of the world won’t either. Unless China and India get onboard it’s all for nothing. China is responsible for 33% India 8% and the UK is barely 1%. USA is worse than India at 11% but they won’t do jack shit especially with President Cheeto. Not really sure what the answer is here as global cooperation is at an all time low.

To be fair to the Tories, they did a huge amount towards combating climate change since 2010. They built a huge solar and offshore wind capacity, gave grants to improve home insulation, required all new houses to have EV chargers, announced the ban of petrol car sales by 2030, pushed heat pumps to replace natural gas heating etc.

You've heard of permafrost? Well, it's starting to melt. Yeah... that's pretty warm. Well, when I say "melt" I mean way beyond what was considered stable. The increases are causing pockets of methane to be released. It's estimated that there's more methane trapped in permafrost than all of human induced pollution. So... we're REALLY FUCKED if it melts.

It also angers me that new buildings now have elevators required by law, automatic smoke ventilation systems in case of fires etc but AC is still considered a luxury so it’s not installed.
So inevitably, people install them afterwards resulting in multiple units hanging off the side of the building. Meanwhile, there could just be one large rooftop unit. Would also be more efficient.
And that’s only the people who can afford to have AC installed. The rest fucking suffer.

Well, I try and save electricity any way I can other than running my AC. I recycle. I drive a small, lightweight, efficient hatchback with a 1L petrol engine. I last filled up the day Trump invaded Iran and still got half the tank.
I heat my house with natural gas, no coal or wood.
I’m doing all I can afford to do to reduce my impact.
But after 32 years constantly living in the hottest room in the building I got a portable AC and I’m sorry but I need it to not absolutely suffer all summer.

I'm about two steps removed from becoming an eco-terrorist, but there's a point where you just have to suck it up, because there isn't any other viable option. You'd have to tear down 80% of the buildings in Europe and rebuild them with natural cooling in mind to avoid AC becoming necessary. Or you can build one nuclear reactor and supply enough power for a million people to run AC all they like. But nuclear is scary, so say goodbye to Grannie, I suppose.

or you can power your A/C with solar panels. Last year Germany (not widely known for its particularly good weather) supplied HALF of its electricity needs from renewables - most of that of course during the summer, when you'd typically run A/C. In my city alone there's enough roof-mounted solar to produce 100k MWh/a. That's not including apartment balcony solar and Greenfield solar plants

AC takes an enormous amount of power. It's not impossible to do it off solar, but it's not as readily deployable as you're implying. Conservatively, a window-mounted AC will use about 1000 watts. A central air unit will be closer to 2000-3000. A 'good' panel nowadays will do about 400 watts, and be the size of a dinner table. You'll get about 80% of that out the other end on a good day, means you need 3 of those *just* to run a single *small* AC, under optimal conditions.

You can use Air Pumps to cool your house, whether traditional style units or just pumping cold water around you central 'heating' system.

Heat pumps aren't terribly more efficient than window unit ACs for cooling, and European homes aren't built for central air so the only viable model will be ductless. Some of these buildings are older than the *airplane*, so many of the efficient technologies that would work best with a solar power supply simply aren't feasible. Most viable solutions will need to be "bolt on", which are generally the least efficient way of doing things.

But not when needed, at least here. AC use spikes when people come home from work, but that is also when solar starts to rapidly become less useful. That combined with low wind speeds led to a spike in energy costs in Germany and The Netherlands a few days ago.

So let's look at Australia on that metric. Around 14 percent of electricity is via rooftop solar. From around 30 percent of houses. Thats largely legacy panels. Modern panels operate more efficiently and with greater uv utilisation...I.e. not direct sun

I wouldn't shame someone when they get an A/C when it's the only thing keeping them from dying. It was 30.5 degrees in my home this morning. At this point I'm trying to keep my dog alive. Can't wait for tomorrow. Man.
That said, it's my understanding that A/Cs pump inside heat to the outside, making the outside even warmer. This just isn't a permanent solution to anything; A/Cs make things even worse.

Yep, it's necessary in a number of scenarios for now - but it's a short term solution in any of those. There needs to be massive efforts in de-sealing urban areas, re-foresting, lowering energy consumption by A LOT, and developing ways to decrease CO2- and methane levels in the atmosphere. Otherwise there will be no AC powerful enough to save all the grannies in 20 years (at best).
