I mean they're aluminum, so a 500lb cube would be about 18" (44cm) a side. So it could probably be compressed further. Not sure that's the most efficient way to make building material, though. We have good building materials shaped like bricks. They're called bricks. :D
Fun fact, the chemist who first isolated the atom gave it three separate names. Alum is a naturally occurring substance, potassium aluminum sulfate, that had been known about for more than 7,000 years at that point. He first called it Alumium, then Aluminum, and then later changed it to Aluminium to sound similar other atoms like potassium and sodium. However, "Aluminum" was already put in a dictionary in the americas thus cementing the name. *shrug*
I had a co-worker get everyone on our three floors to save their empty cans for him. Rode the bus home with a black garbage bag of cans daily. Filled his entire garage with aluminum cans. Was too broke to rent a truck to take them to the recycle. Got a guy on Craigslist to agree to payment for moving the cans after recycle paid him. Guy loaded up the entire garage full of cans, agreed to meet my co-worker at the recycle place. Truck and driver were never seen again.

You get more if it's cast aluminum. I've toyed with the idea of making an induction melter that just melts a stack of them into a mold

I wonder if that's the limit, or if it could be compressed even further.
Imagine making soda can bricks, shaped like building bricks, and then used to create a structure, a shelter for homeless people.

I'll bet you could solve the Billionaire/Trillionaire over-supply with one of these.

Compact. Efficient. Requires much less billions of dollars to maintain.

Aluminium, according to the British English speakers.
Neat machine, no matter how it’s spelled/pronounced.

500lb is worth around $390, but you would need to collect 16000 cans for that, working out at 41 cans per dollar.
