For anyone unfamiliar, LARP stands for live action roleplay. It's essentially where a whole bunch of nerds get together, dress up, and fight (either npcs or each other).
The one I attended was called Dystopia Rising and is an apocalyptic mix of Mad Max/Fallout/ect. I just wanted to share a little bit of my experience there, and if anyone is interested in LARPing..
DO .
IT.

Everyone attending dresses up and let me tell you, they are the most creative and talented people out there. So many people's costumes looked so amazing.

Also during the weekend, you get to play as an npc or non-playable character. This is your opportunity to become the zombie(zed)/raider/a whole bunch of other wasteland creatures that everyone has to fight off. These three studs are Gorehounds, which are basically the Deathclaws of DR. These lil fuckers look cheeky but they one shot you and drag you out to the wilderness to be fodder.

Each character is hand crafted by the player. You can literally be WHOEVER you want. Wanna be an asshole? DO IT. Wanna be a racist medic that heals people by making them drink their blood, hey DO IT.
Everyone is super unique. Traits. Appearance. Attire. Its amazing.

( it me!) There are also a ton of classes to choose from. You can be a lone scavenger, a caravan driver, a sawbones (doctor), a teacher, a priest, a hunter, a hire solider, ect
THERE ARE SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM.
It's basically the best RPG game ever because it all feels real and the combos are limitless

Before I actually went LARPing, I was pretty apprehensive because I barely knew the people I was going with (also over 200 attended) and I've never been really good at making friends. When I first got there, I was greeted by happy faces. Everyone helps everyone and these freaking people are the got-dang most pure hearted people I've ever met. They are hilarious, kind, and inclusive.
And spicy.
A lot of them are spicy.

The entire weekend was just a whole bunch of unity, friendship, and fun. If you don't feel comfortable, you tell them, and they help you out. If you can't stay in character because it's too much, they help you out. If you get sick, injured, scared, someone is always there for you. It's just a big family.

I love this shot. This is everyone charging a scary ass tank.
Teamwork is key
nEVER Go ANYWHERE ALONE

Again, with the individuality and effort people put forth in their costumes. I love it all.

NO ONE LEFT BEHIND

A brief summary (from the Website) : Dystopia Rising is a game that is not centered on the undead. It is a game that is centered on what becomes of the human condition when forced into an environment where survival could very well be your only concern. Do you decide to become a ruthless warlord, an amoral sociopath, or a monster much uglier inside than any zombie is on the outside? Perhaps you take the high road as a nameless wanderer, find higher purpose in faith, or do everything you can to force civility into a chaotic world. No one can tell you what you will do other than your own conscience. The world died many generations ago, and it is your turn to build the new world from the ashes.

This is the group I was introduced to. Most of them I had never met before, but ever since that game, I have found my best friends. These people have become my family. They are all absolutely ridiculous and I freaking love them each to pieces.

ARTSY SQUAD. But really you guys, Dystopia Rising has basically changed my life. I have found my niche, and I'm just so excited, I had to share it with Imgur. If anyone is considering trying LARP, just do it! Give it a shot. The Dystopia Rising chapter I go to is in Southern California, but they are literally EVERYWHERE. Try it out guys, fo real. If anyone has any questions about it, you can message me! I'd be happy to help out!

Dystopia rising is a very unique larp. Hands down best larp I've ever been a part of

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I LARPed for a few years. It can be fun, but you've gotta find the right game and be prepared to put in a colossal amount of effort.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I write for this company! And play this LARP! Hi friend!

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Or rum.. rum is also nice

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You have found your tribe!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh my god, I've been going to this exact larp for 7 months now. Pictured is the first month I didn't go, which breaks my heart.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Next game then!!!!!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All the LARP people I know are elitists who think they are better than people who play P&P RP games. But that's where I live, so there.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In my group, we play tabletop games or d20s after almost every practice. Just gotta find the right group, I guess.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The LARPers at my university are NOT THIS ATTRACTIVE

10 years ago | Likes 234 Dislikes 4

Then join them and invite pretty people to go with you. Inspire them with stories, entice them with the prospect of fun.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

we had a group in the bowl between dorms, classic neckbeards beating each other with duct tape covered pool noodles...not this attractive

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Then you should join them and be an inspiration.

I'm a fan of Dystopia Rising, I play in the Washington game. Never thought I'd be a LARPer, let alone boffer larp.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

HI FRIEND ME TOO!!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

EEEEEE! SOCAL DR! I play in the WA chapter. This is so cool to see. <3

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

ME TOO WHO ARE YOU???

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I play Getter and Alouette! WHO IS YOU?!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always wanted to LARP. But my ADHD would never allow me to improvise in character for more than a few minutes. Take my upvote of envy: +1

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just be a crazy bandit with multiple personality disorder.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

GENIUS!!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!

10 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 6

I believe this larping they hit each other with foam swords and yell 2 damage! 2 damage!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

For melee yes, ranged you throw a packet (cloth pack filled with birdseed and color coded) and announce damage that way.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: I've actually LARPed with that guy.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Why did he cast Death at the end, why not cast it right away?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Maybe his Death spell didn't have enough HP, so he had to wear him down first?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As an avid RPG player I can't get into LARPing because of the free flow rules. If I'm throwing lightning bolt at you, how much damage is it?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Most LARPs (in the US) actually have very rigid rules. Spells either have preset damage or you have to shout the damage along with the call.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What stops someone from throwing a ball in the middle of something and saying "100 damage meteor strike AOE!" Maybe it's bad understanding

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Also I don't like how people throw around foam swords with abandon. If you are in a real fight, you want to live more than kill.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There are some one-shot LARPs where death is permanent, but most long-term games play way better if there's a resurrect mechanic. Still, 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nothing, except being kicked out of the game for cheating. As with any non-computer game, everyone needs to play fair. The rules are static.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can I just show up as a healer with whiskey in every slot and make people drink to heal? I might larp then.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've seen it done at events.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its so awesome that you've found something you value! I sincerely hope you keep with it.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I cringed all the way....i guess it's not for me, but if you have fun doing that, that's all that matter

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 13

Gorehounds got me, but yeah, ya'll have fun.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same thought here - happy for you - but....think I would be very uncomfortable and awkward

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why exactly is it cringy?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh hey, I spy myself. (Dude with the wooden plank / metal sandwich sword thing.) The hardest part about DR is explaining it to people.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Which I guess is actually called a macuahuitl but wooden metal sandwich sword is so much more pleasing

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No worse than those of us in the MES who have to explain we pretend to be Vampires and Werewolves and Mages on our weekends off... :P

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hello fellow DR friend! I'm an ST in WA! Welcome to the game! Hopefully we'll see you at Uprise!!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

what state are you in, I actually go to drnj

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You've played one game with them and you call them best friends and even family...?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

It's a great community (at least at DR) + its hard not to bond quickly with people after 40 straight hours of immersive survival roleplaying

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That said, as most LARPs, its not without its occasional social drama, esp when cults of personality crop up around long established players

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Crazy how it bonds you. There are people I've only ever seen while playing Paintball 20 years ago and I still hold them in warm regard.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

As a LARPer, I've never liked the "foam swords" variant, but that still looks fun as fuck...

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

I play and while it is boffer LARP, it's "lightest touch". So, it's soft tap, not beating near to unconsciousness.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair, I got thwacked in a battle game sunday. The bruise is righteous. Foam or not, shit can ring your bell yo.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's fair. It's a "LARP that has boffers" rather than a "boffer LARP," though. Subtle but important distinction. Source: I'm a DR ST.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've only played in boffer LARPs. It's actually a pretty decent workout, and it is indeed fun as hell.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Florida there is this thing i go to called wasteland it's fallout themed larping with airsoft guns, super fun experience

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm in socal and I really wanna try this. But I'm too shy and suck at acting. Haha

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I suck at acting, but have been faking it at DR for almost three years now. Give it a shot, we cut through shy like a hot knife thru butter.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The community surrounding these things are usually super welcoming. Just give it a shot

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'll be researching this community later tonight. Already have a character in the works XD. Thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Hey op what do you need to get started character wise?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You don't need much. Costuming can be done with a cheap budget. It's mostly about what type of character you want to play.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dystopiarising.com is a great starting point. You can find a game near you and find the different "Beginner Guide"s for each game.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What would you need to bring other than your clothes is it like camping do I need food and water and a tent or something

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I looked at that the closest one is 2 hours away in Massachusetts

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2hrs for a weekend of fun? Come now that's totally worth it

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So do you rely on people's honesty when they get hit? As in, do you get a lot of "I hit him!!", "No you didn't", "I did, you're dead!"

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can ignore a hit against the honor code, but I'm just going to light you up until you call dead.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Sorry for the triple reply o.o

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can ignore a hit against the honor code, but I'm just going to light you up until you call dead. People who do that are called sluffers

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Depending on the system, it could a simple limb and torso system where you loose a limb or die for a shot to the torso. Other systems are >

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Based off more classic rpgs like D&D and have a hit point system and eat character has different hit ranges based off you weapon and stats>

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And you call pit your damage as you hit, mostly done on the honor system, most battles are staged and are have ref's keeping an eye out for>

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People trying to cheat and any arguments that may occur between players.
