A generous imagurian has offered to sponsor a hot meal for all 300 kids but would like to go big if they can find someone to split costs with for a nicer meal. Here is the meal we were thinking of.
20 kilograms spaghetti - $200
25 kilograms fried chicken - $135
150 apples - $40
150 oranges - $45
300 Juices - $54

I can't buy frozen chicken scraps pressed together(nuggets) for less than $3 a pound yet they are getting 55lbs of fried chicken at $2.45 a pound, shit where in Costco land is that possible?

I'm just confused on why chicken is cheaper than pasta:
25Kg spaghetti - $250
25Kg fried chicken - $135
I would assume the pasta would be the cheapest to buy.

This is a once in a long time treat. It's neither red nor highly processed. I once sponsored a meal because I didn't like how much plastic was involved and paying for it allowed me to dictate my concern. She tailored the meal. You can do the same. Want to get the folks something specific? Pony up.

Which is exactly what I did. I demanded two kinds of fruit so the kids have a choice (choices are self empowerment), and because they don't get fruit often. And as for the main course, she said those were the two things they liked the most and dream about, and I said only if it's home cooked cause fast food sucks and you don't get anything for the money. She's gonna add ground pork and hotdogs to the sauce and I guess cheese. And do a full serving of chicken but a half serving of pasta.

I couldn't afford the menu I wanted by myself so I asked if people wanted to help and more than a few generous people did. :) kiddies will be eating good as soon as it stops raining so she can get to their village.

I liked the idea of them getting to try multiple things and definitely being full at the end though. The chicken porridge is definitely way cheaper.

...what? You could buy the stuff and cook it. The 20kg spaghetti alone should be like 30 bucks tops. Around maybe 50 with sauce. Don't feed them junk food, find a food bank and ask them if you can cook the meals there or if they have other options to help out. They have the gear to cook up large quantities, and then you could hand out some extra.

The photo is only where they usually get it from which has also become too expensive.
For this meal, they're cooking everything by hand because I specifically requested it as it will feed more kids and also give a day of paid labor to a resident. We went over the numbers together already.
I also specifically wanted healthy and hearty meals that the kids are always asking for and even insisted on two kinds of fruit (apples and oranges) so the kids have some choice.

I feel that. When you give you kind of just have to try and accept that things are possibly a scam, it leaves a bad taste. I've definitely donated to sob stories before that were definitely scams, but the free meal lady is very well known so it's very unlikely here. Trust me I worked all the details out with her. And I put US money because I'm American, and it was based on the transfer rates into PHP. Plus it's less than $500 for 300 kids, which means it's only $1.58usd per meal, and this is

Yeah, I can see who it is and I appreciate their commitment. Doesn't make what I said untrue, though. The Philippines has food banks, too, no doubt. And if you have been doing this for years, what's the harm in partnering with local food banks? Been there, done that, I don't see the issue? We have the luxury of having these already established here, I admit. Maybe it's very different over there.

Oh, nice! Appreciate the reply. That still looks more expensive than it should be, though? I didn't know which country this is, I apologize. I assumed this was somewhere in the US due to "USD". Why is spaghetti so expensive for you? That stuff in my experience is rather cheap in large quantities.

Yeah, I understood that part. But, forgive my ignorance, how do you arrive at $200 for 20kg of spaghetti? This image is from the more expensive ones I could find (I checked multiple). That pack is $2.10 (converted). I believe it includes sauce. 20 of those alone would be around $42 US. I can't imagine that, somehow, your spaghetti ends up 5x as expensive, no matter which store. The most expensive one I could find is around $3 US. You listed the prices in USD.

I bet the amount have leeway because you have to consider other ingredients as well, transportation, packaging and everything.

You realize that pack is maybe 8-10 servings. We'd really need 40 packs to feed 300 kids but we're only doing half portions because they're going to get fried chicken as well.
