My fiancée brought up astrology early on when we first started dating. She later told me that she would always bring up astrology in front of new dates to gauge their reaction. If they acted super condescendingly, it was a red flag. Sometimes it’s best to reserve judgment at first and not overreact
I wish I was naive enough to say you should keep an open mind, but 100% of the guys I’ve dated (I’m gay) who have been *into* astrology have been the worst people I’ve ever met, much less dated.
The way astrologists use the term, yea. But the word "retrograde", basically just meaning "to go backwards", is used in all sorts of legitimate contexts including to describe orbits. A retrograde orbit is opposite in sense to the rotation of the parent body about its own axis. All planets are prograde, but some comets are retrograde, and many artificial satellites are retrograde.
A common example is a sun-synchronous orbit, which allows a satellite in earth orbit to pass over the same point at the same solar time each pass. This orbit must be slightly retrograde to achieve that effect.
Can you explain how? Because at the core of crypto is some very hard mathematics, and at the core of astrology is some goofy generic associations between the movement of the celestial bodies and your personality.
Or do you just mean they attract the same kind of morons? Cuz I can agree with that.
I have a sweet, wonderful girlfriend who is into aliens, Bigfoot, and anything like that. I'm a Carl Sagan disciple, skeptic. It's tough but we make it work. Just don't be condescending.
'Into' is one thing, but does she base important life decisions on which way bigfoot is facing in the latest blurry photo? That is where I start to question compatibility, if they abandon critical thinking and reason to some arbitrary thing
I'd love to see modern religions talked about in the same way as astrology is. It's not taken seriously, just a token bit is for fun. If you deeply believe, everyone around you had a sudden eye issue where they are rolled
Got into meyers Briggs, then found out it was formulated by arbitrary feelings from a mother wanting to know if she'd get along with her future son-in-law.
While MBTI is kinda trash, I do think that the jungian functions that its based on has its merits. Doesn't matter if they are "correct"- it's like pantone colors. An external system to reference, relate and talk about feelings and mechanisms that everyone can bind their own understanding to, allowing pretty efficient communication. Does an ESTJ like bananas? Noone the fuck knows. But "That guy is a high Te user" sure tells me a lot in how to interpret their specific mimic and voice melody.
MBTI at least attempts to use psychological concepts rather than cosmic/supernatural ones. It’s similar to Big Five Personality concepts though a lot less reliable on predicting job performance, relationship satisfaction, mental health, etc.
My experiences have been the same folks into astrology are probably also into that Meyers Briggs categorization.
Though, on the subject: I remember a while back, many jobs did online questionnaires that were basically Meyers Briggs tests for human resources. I'm pretty sure they had some basis on it, but I think they just re-worded stuff to around more job-related.
Yeah my mom and sister got super into both Myers-Briggs and astrology (among other things). They're totally compatible. And of course, Briggs and Briggs Myers were both women themselves.
The disconnect is that Myers-Briggs was the only crackpot, New Age-adjacent psychobabble that came up again during my law school's orientation. It's been co-opted from the women who originated it, same as incels.
They're all just fun personality tests. I did a lot of "which character from this TV show are you" when I was a teen and see all these tests and astrology stuff as that. It goes too far if folks start thinking it's science though.
Myers Briggs isn't scientific, no. But it's also miles better than Astrology, in that it at least tries to categorize things in a way that makes sense and doesn't just take wild guesses because that's what the person felt like that day.
Yes they actually broke things into categories and then added things to those categories like a real science would do. They were wrong, but that's miles better than anything astrology does.
Unironically, i have been super curious about my bloodtype but neither my parents remember what it was and my birth certificate is so far buried in some drawer that I would need to assemble an archeology team to have a chance... unless the traps still works.
They 1,000% knew the person's blood type long before they entered the surgery theater. That isn't something you decide to find out after the need arises. There were blood tests that were done before the actual surgery and it's guaranteed they found his blood type then.
My dog tags does not contain blood types and actually explicitly says not to carve it in. It was part of what made me curious in the first place since it almost appeared that it was information that was intentionally kept from me.
Were you in the US military? I've never heard of them leaving that off of the dog tags as it's very important if you get wounded in combat and aren't able to speak.
Not American. My dog tag was made when I was born and bloodtypes can change as you get older. Also not super necessary since they can easily test your blood in the field to see what type you need which solves the issue of changing bloodtypes or if you are wearing a dogtag that is not your own.
Thats not very sigma of her, sounds more like beta thinking which doesn't pair well with his rising alpha mindset. How's a man supposed to breed the next generation of bros if hes always having to deal with feminine thoughts. It'll make him womanly and beta. Sounds gay trying to date women like this /s
*chef's kiss* Perfect response there. The donkey's bray of a guffaw you ripped out of me gave me a sore throat in a great way. TY, kind internet stranger.
I will never in my entire life forget a photo an ex sent to me while they were doing IT stuff for a chiropractor. One of the posters depicted a totally normal spine, claiming to exhibit bone spurs.
Man, so what? Maybe she's kind-hearted, or really creative, or has a great sense of humour. You could meet someone amazing, but your urge to be a Redditor about them believing something kooky but harmless is stealing your sense of joy and curiosity.
Nah. I am an empiricist. I am willing to entertain a hypothesis if there is some sort of data to support it. Since that is not the case with this belief, it will just irritate the piss out of me and we won't get along. Why waste everyone's time? Both of us can find someone with whom we are more compatible.
A vague "astrologist", ie "I read a horoscope once a month for funsies" is kooky but harmless. A serious "astrologist", ie "I must know the time and date of your birth to determine if we are compatible and will abandon or deliberately hurt you the moment my star charts tell me to" is dangerous.
Its pretty interesting when you ask which astrology is correct, the greek one or chinese. The Chinese astrology gives personality traits for a group of people for the whole year, while the former does in 30 day chunks.
Yeah, astrology can be a phase, and I've never met anyone that started believing in astrology as an adult. Religion is way worse. Hell, half the people I've known that talked about astrology considered it entertainment, fun when accurate, hilarious when wrong. Religion is way more toxic.

There is a ton of overlap though. Religious people often believe in other irrational or pseudo-medical nonsense too, whereas atheists are more likely to apply rational skepticism to any kind of truth claim.
I find the loudest "im an athiest" people tend to have many of the same problems as evangelical christians. Believing only what they already know and refusing to accept any information that goes against their personal beliefs, whether it has to do with religion or not
Yeah, that's not how rational skepticism aka the scientific method works. That's just a rationalization by religious believers to try and pull better educated people down to their level. "You guys believe in something too, so there. Your religion is science and you can't accept supernatural hooey that goes against anything we've discovered about the universe we live in. That makes you just as close-minded as we are. Take that, atheists!"
Thats not how rational skepticism works, but it is how people work. A lot of people traded in their unwavering certainty in their version of the supernatural for unwavering certainty in their version of the natural. Those people don't actually have reasons for their skepticism at any deep level, they've chosen a team. They're also usually the most performative about it. Its roughly the same problem that vegans have: conflating being on the correct side with being personally superior
Oh bullshit. If you equate skepticism or agnostic atheism (aka atheism for short) with "unwavering certainty", you only prove that you have no idea what you're talking about. Show any skeptic an actual deity who can prove her divine powers and we'll all agree that this deity exists (which doesn't mean we'll worship her). Skepticism / agnostic atheism is all about proof. If your world view is set in stone you're not a skeptic, but skeptics don't believe in evidence-free outlandish claims either.
Did you see the woman from The Rehearsal season one? She wanted to rehearse raising a child? She was one of those New Age conspiracy theory pseudo "Christians" to a T.
Astrology *is* a religion in everything except name. The people who think Astrology is real but Christianity is "obviously dumb, made-up bullshit" are more or less identical to Christians who think Christianity is real but Buddhism is "obviously dumb, made-up bullshit".
They're all systems made up by people who are frightened of the idea that there's stuff in the universe beyond their understanding. And then those systems are used by others to manipulate and grift the believers.
I've never met an astrology believer who wasn't also religious. Maybe because back when astrology was popular and every newspaper had horoscopes, religiosity was a lot more widespread too. Now both is in decline in the developed world and probably for the same reason (improved public education).
They can though also be of the 'spiritual' sort of religious where they don't identify as religious but what it means is not belonging to a specific church or dogmatic structure while still participating in the worldview beliefs of the religion.
I agree that my statements about atheists don't necessarily apply to non-religious people who were lucky enough to grow up w/o indoctrination and never had a pressing reason to develop a skeptic mindset. They're technically atheists too, but few of them would identify as such. A majority of self-identifying atheists had a religious upbringing according to Pew. We had to learn early to spot a scam and question dubious truth claims, which may not be the case for people who are simply non-religious
Dude, not any more crazy than someone believing in God and Jesus who they can communicate with to make requests. All religion is equally untrue and mystical. May we someday be able to free Pegasus before your time to pass it on to the next keeper.
Every religious belief system is equally fantastic and made up, loony applies to all of them. But religion seems to be a common way to adopt belief systems or mask trauma, so what can you do. I'd just suggest the use of loony feels a bit judgy when even jaduaism, Christianity, and the caananite and babylonian origins are just as fantastical
You should have seen if she's up on her lore by talking about how the Pegasus is imprisoned in an asteroid in the Devonian system, placed there by the mythical heroes Ryker and Jellico. If she catches on that you're talking about an episode of Star Trek the Next Generation, there might have been hope for her.
I think its an unfounded belief but its kind of unfair to that it as different from other religions like Christianity. They're all made up, everyone can like star trek, but "hope for her". It's a tad judgy

I've never met an astrology believer who wasn't also religious. Maybe because back when astrology was popular and every newspaper had horoscopes, religiosity was a lot more widespread too. Now both is in decline in the developed world and probably for the same reason (improved public education).
iquestionthepinappleeveryday
I really don’t see either in decline at the moment. Stagnant at best and less confidence in science.
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
"in the developed world". Maybe not so much in the US.
OMGChris
Well, you WOULD say that cause you're a [insert star sign here] /s 😆

They can though also be of the 'spiritual' sort of religious where they don't identify as religious but what it means is not belonging to a specific church or dogmatic structure while still participating in the worldview beliefs of the religion.
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
I agree that my statements about atheists don't necessarily apply to non-religious people who were lucky enough to grow up w/o indoctrination and never had a pressing reason to develop a skeptic mindset. They're technically atheists too, but few of them would identify as such. A majority of self-identifying atheists had a religious upbringing according to Pew. We had to learn early to spot a scam and question dubious truth claims, which may not be the case for people who are simply non-religious

Met a girl some years ago who, and she was serious, was the 'gatekeeper of Pegasus' or something like that. And she took her time explaining it to me.
dieselfury
Dude, not any more crazy than someone believing in God and Jesus who they can communicate with to make requests. All religion is equally untrue and mystical. May we someday be able to free Pegasus before your time to pass it on to the next keeper.

OMG that is hilarious. I would have totally leaned all the way in on that. I love loony shit like that!
dieselfury
Every religious belief system is equally fantastic and made up, loony applies to all of them. But religion seems to be a common way to adopt belief systems or mask trauma, so what can you do. I'd just suggest the use of loony feels a bit judgy when even jaduaism, Christianity, and the caananite and babylonian origins are just as fantastical

Did she mention who the keymaster of Pegasus would be?

Fantastic.

How the fuck does a flying horse have a gatekeeper? Does she keep it in a hangar or what?
usernametakenisthestoryofmylife
She even "had a key." I shit you not.

You should have seen if she's up on her lore by talking about how the Pegasus is imprisoned in an asteroid in the Devonian system, placed there by the mythical heroes Ryker and Jellico. If she catches on that you're talking about an episode of Star Trek the Next Generation, there might have been hope for her.
dieselfury
I think its an unfounded belief but its kind of unfair to that it as different from other religions like Christianity. They're all made up, everyone can like star trek, but "hope for her". It's a tad judgy
iquestionthepinappleeveryday
Would… um, would it have been A New Hope? I’ll see myself out.

You should have asserted dominance and began reciting Warhammer 40k lore.
