During the cold war we had all those bases for a few reasons: alert and tracking stations for Soviet missiles or bombers coming over the north, and to cover the naval Greenland - Iceland -UK gap. It actually has to do with Russia this time too, but in a different sense. Russia wants friendly waters for shipping through the Artic. If Orange shitstain can acquire Greenland, as a Russian asset, it will give Putin what it wants. Same thing with Canada. And the Panama Canal was very much the same - It wasn't on the radar until Russian flag ships were prohibited through it. As soon as that broke as news, Rump was all over annexing it.

We as people who work productive jobs, the ones who create wealth in the first place are always the ones to shoulder the bill on extra taxes and tariffs. It might help improve domestic prospects IF the domestic cost of operations is similar, already exists, and the greedy owners don't increase pricing to be similar to the newly raised import prices, because why wouldn't you want more profit?
