If the US suddenly is so concerned about Greenland, why have they gone from 17 bases and 10000 soldiers to ONE base with 200 personnel ? Just made up BS from the Orange idiot

Is it a coincidence that trump wants to order 20 ice breaker ships from Finland? Why would the potus want that? Seems odd

the word of the day is "bluster"

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They want Greenland's critical minerals. Around 60 percent of the metals required for renewable technologies come directly from China or Chinese companies. Trump also wants Greenland's untapped oil and gas reserves. Greedy asshole.

It's about etching his name in history somehow. Small pe*** looking for glory.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's about anschlussing land to follow the footsteps of the president whose portrait just joined the ovale office, the one who extended US borders the most.
Spanky saw a large chunk of land on the mercador map, said "that's yuge", and decided he wanted it.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're concerned with it because climate change is making the rape of it's natural resources far easier and cheaper than ever before. Do we really still not understand this?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm still not entirely convinced Trump wasn't tricked by the name.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's 100% because Trump doesn't understand how a Mercator projection works and wants a big thing on the map to have his name on it. Plus the right is such a bananas cult these days that they have to aggressively champion any bullshit that comes out of his mouth as some soft of genius and completely necessary thing.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its all about the lack of interest in the old ways of the Greenlanders, cabin fever and adverse weather conditions. The Mango wank-stain & his goonies prefer Florida.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He wants to pillage the resources with impunity and get his name in history books for acquiring territory. It's ludicrous that not owning specific lands is a deficiency in defense. Why not own all of the lands then? Hmmm

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a Russian ploy to destroy NATO. The U.S. send troops, effectively declaring war on NATO partner, Denmark, effectively ending NATO and removing the U.S. from all things European. Score team Putin.

How many bases were closed during rump's first term?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Remember when James Donald Bowman(AKA JD 'Couch Fucker' Vance) said the USA wants to take Greenland due to Russian and Chinese encroachment, yet is now actively helping Russia invade Ukraine?

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Trump doesn't understand projection maps and thus thinks Greenland is HUGE.

Fascist regimes require threats to keep people from turning their anger at the people oppressing them.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was never about national security. It's because Greenland has value that isn't being exploited. It's that simple.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

he is rattling swords about it so that when 2028 comes around, he can justify starting a small war over it, so he can suspend the election and remain president. remember how he pressured zelenskyy over not holding elections so everyone would shout about "its normal to not hold elections while at war"? hes created precedent. make sense now?

It is beyond insane that Musk is trying to carry on his father's work like this.
How deeply broken as people are they that these kinds of solutions without any concern for the chaos and loss of life they will cause is a generational goal.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Musk is an accelerationist btw if we are looking at stuff like this. If you want to know his next move ask GPT what an accelerationist with unfettered power would do next after describing what has been done so far.

I encourage you to look up Camp Century. The ecological science and research done there is absolutely thrilling.

For anyone who doesn't want to bother: The US wanted to use it as a launch site but never got permission, it was abandoned in the 60s.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

However, they were able to extract a mile long ice core and were able to get millions of years of environmental data from it!

They built what looked like an oil Derrick under an ice sheet in a nuclear powered black site! Pretty much all the data we have for climate conditions came from that ice core!

And they developed RodWell technology there for water and power, which NASA plans on using for manned Mars research sites!

Good stuff.

Not sure what the map red circle is trying to represent but the remaining base is Thule in the NW. Thule Air Base has been renamed Pituffick Space Base.

Its all about creating imaginary threats while coming up as the solution. Trump launched campaign in Greenland.

1 year ago | Likes 216 Dislikes 2

the only way orange can act is to create problems at a country level that require executive orders to resolve.

1 year ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

During the cold war we had all those bases for a few reasons: alert and tracking stations for Soviet missiles or bombers coming over the north, and to cover the naval Greenland - Iceland -UK gap. Why Cheeto Mussolini is obsessed with it now I have no idea but probably some techbro fascist has a delusion about its importance.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It actually has to do with Russia this time too, but in a different sense. Russia wants friendly waters for shipping through the Artic. If Orange shitstain can acquire Greenland, as a Russian asset, it will give Putin what it wants. Same thing with Canada. And the Panama Canal was very much the same - It wasn't on the radar until Russian flag ships were prohibited through it. As soon as that broke as news, Rump was all over annexing it.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Acquiring Greenland is so Putin can point and say…. The US is expansionist too! Trumps entire agenda is to dance for Putin. I am certain he has Kompromat on the big orange dildo.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This. I doubt Trump would have ever thought about Greenland, someone gave him the idea.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pee pee tape.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I still think that buying/annexing/acquiring Greenland or Canada is something that he's going to bring up anytime something doesn't go his way.

Economy starts to tank? Greenland. Services of the government shut down? Greenland. Canada doesn't want to pay tariffs? We should annex it.

Another subtle as a brick sleight of tiny hand attempt.

1 year ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 0

Its not a distraction, or a joke. Trump doesn't joke. He is serious. Will he be able to achieve these things, I think it's fairly unlikely, but he is being honest about his desires. None of his outrageous statements are jokes or distractions, he really means it, he really is that bad of a person. He "wants the kinds of generals Hitler had". He said this. He wants the kind of unchecked power of Hitler. He doesnt have it yet, but we are getting closer and closer to that point.

He and his handler are planning a world war my dude. Putin gets Europe, xi gets Asia, Trump gets the Americas and the rest gets enslaved.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Governments don't pay tariffs, businesses do.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Tariffs are added taxes to your purchases, not the originating country not to the businesses either because they pass those + a margin to the customers. People dont understand this.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Businesses that import tariffed goods pay the duty. What they do to cover the added expenses of the tariffs, doesn't change the fact that they pay them.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Businesses immediately pass that payment onto the customers. We as people who work productive jobs, the ones who create wealth in the first place are always the ones to shoulder the bill on extra taxes and tariffs. It might help improve domestic prospects IF the domestic cost of operations is similar, already exists, and the greedy owners don't increase pricing to be similar to the newly raised import prices, because why wouldn't you want more profit?

And they claim Denmark has not been keeping Greenland safe - how much war has Greenland endured? Please enlighten me on that one, oh orange diaper boy!

1 year ago | Likes 167 Dislikes 0

Not much warring, but some of us still remember: https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/the-cold-war-that-wasnt-norway-annexes-greenland/

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

True, Denmark defended its sovereignty over Greenland through legal channels during the 1930s and relied on U.S. assistance to protect the island during World War II. I mean, that's what allies are for...

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh, yes there was the whiskey war that went on for a while until Canada and Denmark got around to resolving it when Russia invaded Ukraine to show how to resolve international disagreements by negotiation.

Personally, I think this Greenland shit is a proxy and/or practice run for Panama.

If I were to be terrified, it's that he sends troops to forcibly occupy the Canal Zone. If he does that, I feel we have a serious and real risk of WW3 (or at least war with China) and it'll probably be nuclear.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have doubts about this. I find it more likely that Greenland shows interest in joining the U.N. and the U.S.A has begun becoming anti U.N. so taking Greenland would strategically be beneficial if the U.S doubles down on becoming a fascist nation hostile with the U.N

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Of course it could be equally both reasons

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you look at history (and the present) these aging autocrats ALWAYS seem to get obsessed with territorial expansion. They're old, they're mortal, they're narcissists, and so they want a glorious legacy after they've died. What could be more glorious than making the nation-state larger? They are so high on sniffing their own hyper-nationalist farts at this point they think it will be easy, their yes-men tell them it will be easy. Putin did it. Xi got Hong Kong, Trump wants Canada and Greenland.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

geopolitically strategic area too? moscow to NY/SF is pretty much a line above greenland... https://earth3dmap.com/3d-globe/

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That's why they set up the original bases that were dismantled after the fall of the Soviet Union. They were considered unnecessary 30+ years ago and nothing has really changed.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And not allowing Chinese mining which is probably pretty awful for the local economy and environment, but efficient at resource extraction. That said, "taking over" is a childish "fix".

I think it is more about finding a reason to get us out of Nato. With the US out of NATO. They are not nearly as threatening to Putin. Even better if we piss off Europe and have them fighting us.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Don't think so, he isn't subtle. Just like he wants resources from Ukraine and he said so.

I think in his first presidency, he asked why US have bases in Greenland and he was told it was for security. Trump is good at ingesting simple statements like that - like bleach kills COVID, and he actually tries to come up with solutions with that new information - it is just extremely stupid ideas, but when he floated the idea about Greenland before, he was told no, which only makes him dig in.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And giving easy access for Russia to invade North America.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hell they don't need to at this point, they have Agent Orange installed.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And our support for Israel is all about supporting genocide.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IMHO, not genocide but an evangelical misconception fueled by Christian Nationalism. They believe that Israel must be a nation and must occupy the original biblical territory for Jesus to return. They're willing to go to any lengths, cast off any moral standard and dispatch anyone who is in the way of "ushering in the messiah's return"

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

There's a few reasons, 1) everyone is so ground down already just trying to survive, 2) social groups are smaller than ever so large movements are harder to get momentum going for, and 3) the propaganda machines of those that are pushing for this end have been spewing distractions daily to exhaust people into not being able to give a damn about anything not immediately threatening.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The nation is physically big. It's hard to get a lot of people without money to travel to meet in one place. That and half the population thinks these changes won't affect them. Education is a real issue in the US. I was at a DnD game and one guy was trying to fight me regarding economics. He was parroting Fox. When I attempted to explain it he cut me off and told me I should get a refund for my business degree. Worst DnD group ever. 6 very stupid things happened and I just gave up on them.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also even if we stopped producing all greenhouse gases right now it would still take over a century to see an appreciable change. Also all that carbon dioxide is going to dissolve into the oceans making carbonic acid, lowering the pH, and fucking aquatic life. Not to mention accelerating erosion and decreasing water quality everywhere, which will have runaway effects on all plant and animal life
