Part of it is excising the tumor, and then long waiting and constant rechecks if it returned.
He was probably diagnosed 9 years ago treated over a couple of years, and now it's been 7 years and was still cancer free.

Luckily these predictions are just that: predictions. They can be influenced by many things: a cold when chemo/immuno compromised your immunesystem (the state I am currently in) or a better-than-predicted efficacy of a drug. If I could have signed up for an extra 5 years when I got diagnosed, I would have given my John Hancock in a second as that was about the very best case scenario imaginable. That was 16 years ago.
