Until the past couple months the average Russian didn't even know there was a war going on. This is a complete shock to them (which was the point) The majority of Russian citizens have been completely insulated from the war, conscription has come from the outlying regions not population centers, and Ukraine hasn't had the ability to launch attacks into Russia so its been "over there" and "going well"
