Friend of mine back in highschool was hosted by a wealthy family in SanFrancisco, and because he came from New Zealand, they bought a handful of (at that time insanely expensive) kiwifruit. Rather than slicing them up as above, he just grabbed one and started eating it like an apple, skin and all. The family was stunned that *anyone* would do that - but that's how they were (and are) eaten :D
83 cents at the big supermarket duopoly, so probably 50c at the local fruit'n'veg around here. A thousand dollars (plus postage and sales tax) for the knife, though.
It's from 1947's "Mickey and the Beanstalk", so the animators would have lived through both the Depression and the War. I imagine memories of food scarcity would have informed their choices, consciously or not.
I likewise remember strong emotions, 40 some years ago. Children have empathy and don't want others to go hungry. As an adult I not know certain politicians revel in the idea, cough R cough.
I just told my husband "I didn't open this to watch the video, I opened this because top comment had better be a gif of Mickey cutting an invisible slice of bread and a bean".

This scene hurts so bad. I may be emotionally unstable in general but, as a kid or adult, this always messes me up.
