Fun fact: Hair is one of the most difficult things in animation to get right. Animators are always very proud of their hair
DarkSock
Well then… CGI porn would've been very difficult in the 70s
Feldspartacus
Also semen
barrettsmithbb
Fun fact: most hair is not animated, it's simulated. Animators only move polygons which represent the hair. Otherwise it would take forever
DoublevBomb
The designers were very proud of Aki Ross' hair, back when. It was quite the technical marvel of the time.
nihilityfarce
This movie's hair animation is absolutely insane, I keep watching the clips online just to marvel at the characters' curly bouncy hair.
niakaki
The hair in FFVII:AC is so pretty good.
peterpaoliello
Agree that's extremely impressive animation.
RespectedJudge
Another fun fact: They actually had two animation teams dedicated to hair animations and sea animations in Moana!

Everyone says the hair is great, but I was most impressed with the sea. Top kek.

I love Brave and Moana for all the wonderful hair animation (among other things, obviously).

they developed a new hair technology for Brave, I think they sold that tech to Autodesk and they put it in Maya

It's good. Not excellent or a cult classic, but definitely worth a watch.

I mainly went to see it for Lin-Manuel Miranda, using my 9 yr old sister as an excuse, but it was good.

Its incredible. bring your kids. And the songs you'll be ok with having stuck in your head for months because they're great.

It's probably my favorite Disney movie
ForSomeAbstractReason
It is actually done with ultra high detail and definition, so if you have one of those super fancy theaters, it will make you eyegasm.
Also catchy songs, funny jokes, interesting plot, and a lot of the cast is actually from the Pacific Islands.
choakid999
Way better than frozen was or ever will be
seesilience
I liked it..biased cuz I have curly brown hair too and the animation was so good.
idontpatronizebunnyrabbits
Saw it thrice in theaters. Sing songs from it daily. Love it. Love it. Let's see it again. Is it on blu ray yet? (No)
Ryebread91
Haven't either but the scenes of the water and aquatic life looked so amazing in the trailer I'd see it just for that but also a Disney fan.
They are incredibly realistic, I gasped at how striking it looked on the big screen. Excellent job!
DidItForScience
As a Hawaiian, I'm afraid to watch it in case Disney wrecked up the cultural aspect. I should probably look up some reviews.
Pwnyo
My Hawaiian friends loved it, so hopefully will be fine :) it's also Polynesian not explicitly Hawaiian so less risk of cultural fuckups
masochisticgiggler
I might have seen it 4 times... never have I ever gone to see a movie 4 times.
Same!
My kids drug me to it; it was better than I thought it would be for sure. Same with Kubo and the two strings
Joetortillas
I feel Kubo was not even for kids. A lot of dialogue and slow paced scenes, it was very well made!
IanBower
Kubo was awesome
LudeJaw
Kubo was super awesome. Especially when Kubo irritates the monkey.
It blew my mind at the end when I realized it was a stop action movie, not CGI
Same here. The time it must've took to make it was probably ridiculous. Great flick.

Parts of it come of very DreamWorks with a couple dumb jokes and one really bad song there just to make kids laugh I doubt I'll watch it 1/2
Again but it's worth watching at least once. I know the movie is made for kids but this one annoyed me more than most. 2/2
Ovvscolofex
You talkin the shiny song? I think that was there as a tribute for the flight of the concords guy/voice actor who did Fart in Rick&morty
Yeah, I didn't actually mind the way it sounded it was the dumb lyrics that bothered me

The damn hair physics alone make me want to watch it. But I've heard it's pretty good.
batosai33
Screw the hair physics. The water physics are literally revolutionary
Caldaque
I remember everyone freaking out about the hair effects in the Final Fantasy movie back in '01. Things have come a long way.
GreaterDog
They had a team dedicated exclusively to hair. It's awesome.
deevonimon
The scene where Moana's hair is covered in sand made me say "Damn! That must have taken forever to bake! " Always pushing the envelope.
mikenter
Disney's hair physics have been on point for a couple years now.

As a guy with Sarah/WierdAl/Slash hair, that movie made me very proud of my look

Experience from Brave and Monsters Inc created those effects
HughWattmeight
Not mentioning Tangled?
Different effects
What do you mean different effects? Different company or engine?
FBIhere
Also different studios. Tangled was straight Disney. Monster's Inc and Brave were Pixar.
TheAxeNinja
Every CG Disney movie is testing new stuff. Moana was the more wild hair that didn't require resets. Great animation and great film
dragonthc
Brave didn't age well since their experimental CGI.
Brave was another hair test. Imagine it now with the Moana tech
somenub755
Brave didn't age well? How the fuck can a movie not age well? Charlie Chaplin still looks great.
This is what the first Ice Age movie looked like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMfeWyVBidk That's how.
Charlie Chaplin was a human being. You dolt.

One of the most beautiful Disney movies I've seen. I was truly inspired!

7/10 for me. Wife gave it 6/10. We were both content with it but not overly impressed. Moanas song is catchy af tho
@fishlords the otter army grows every day.

That's an odd one to start from.

I'm pretty sure it's the first one to use a new lighting software.
Don't literally all of them do that?
Because it's the first one I saw and started paying attention.

KaineZilla
Best visual feast I have ever seen. I watched it once sober, once stoned. Absolutely amazing either way.
Better than any recent Disney "princess" movies, that chicken side-kick got me every time!!
Loved the chicken...
Hai Hai actually translates to Chicken. His name is chicken. And Pua translates to pig. She named her pets chicken and pig.
espressoandpostrock
Did you know he was voiced by Alan Tudyk?
Yes! And it makes it soooo much better to know he went to juilliard and built up his whole acting career to play animated chicken!
ImGonnaGoOutToRunAndLetMyselfGetAbsolutelySoakingWet
Not amazing but decent
ZacharyComstock
I felt the same way. It wasn't bad but not Disney's best in the story department. But because of Imgur's bandwagon for this movie we'll 1/2
2/2 downvoted for giving our opinion when someone asked for it

+1 to having raised children who understand that Tangled is better than Frozen
NotACanadian
Frozen wasn't even that good to begin with
SirRogers
It'll always be in my "number two" spot, if you know what I mean.
countingsheeps
Tangled is definitely my favourite. I like your kids.
delfin05
This movie bumped tangled to my number 2 spot.
MrtheOffender
That's pretty high praise... nothing will top Lion King but Frozen was pretty good
Yes! Thank the gods that my three-year-old has more songs to sing than "Let It Go" now.
PostNutDepression
To be honest I never quite understood the hype for frozen. Was it because Elsa shot fucking ice beams like a weird Swedish Jynx?
fragtore
I think it's because you're not a kid. The latest Disney successes have been targeted at a younger audience than the golden age of pixar
Flyndaran
Pandering to visuals over story is not age dependent. Many kids like plots too.
I didn't mean that there is less story but that the story is targeting another crowd
Biteymcbiteface
Norwegian*
GrouchyMarx
Interestingly, Jynx is based off of Nordic (So, also Norwegian) legends about a black-skinned, blond siren that lured people into blizzards.
I have never heard this legend and I'm a nordic person that have studied... Well nordic legends. Any name for the myth?
KPopGirlKimi
Fuck yeah!
"Elsa, I'm here to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative."
northwestroots
Best thing to come out of that movie was this metal cover of Let it Go https://youtu.be/so49WpSj9bo
HanTriangleSolo
If Tangled can be 1st favourite, Frozen should be like... Maybe 87. I'm 24,male, and Tangled makes me cry everytime. Just my opinion though.
Is that auto good though? Inside out makes me cry too but it's because it's lazy/cheese and deliberately trying hard for it
tangled was the shit man, never got why frozen was so liked, but i bloody loved tangled, 23 male, maybe it just appeals to our demographic
Complex story vs. ear-worm songs and easily marketable mascots?
25 here, dunno why, Tangled was a miss for me, easily forgotte . I loveed Moana though.
juria
My wedding 5 years ago was tangled themed because my husband and I both loved it so much!
IAmPotatoHearMeRoar
I thought the hype was all from "Let it Go." My husband pranced around for a couple weeks singing that...\
teknojo
That is how I describe it to people as well!
JellyFuckingBeans
This is my current ranking as well. Your kids sound smart
AllTheCoolKidsPeeTheirPants
Frozen? #3? Aww cmon what about finding nemo... toy story...incredibles... wall e.. up?
Those are my favourite recent Disney films! I'e got other rankings for Disney Pixar, and for classic Disney movies
Tangled, Moana, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Inside Out, and Up. I have two daughters and a son. His list is a little different.

I like Moana first then Brave and then Tangled.

Meh. It's ok. The visuals 10/10 but the story 6/10

Stumpyz
Even if it was a crap story, which it isn't, it would still be worth a watch for the hair and water animation quality.
afterdinneromelets
Yes and no. If you're looking for something that strays from the "naive young girl who's been stuck in the same place all her life goes 1/2
on an adventure with a sarcastic male companion and some anthropomorphized animals/objects" you'll be disappointed. But I still enjoyed it.

I took my 4 year old last week. It was her first movie in the theater.
CollMaggie
Mine too! He asks to listen to it in the car all the time now!
She got a little worried and upset when we left and didn't take the movie home with us, and then asked to get it out of Redbox the next day.
It was my 4yr old's second (first was Inside Out), but my 2yr old's first. Good pick.
NiCrAlY

All but the weird pirate coconut scene. Pronunciation was on point, not too disrespectful. Jemaine Clement got a song.
DireSickFish
Yes. Very good.
@fishlords this guy is going to need a @fishdoctor maybe bring in some @fishoil4you
Do have any ideas for a good scene for a gif, one with lots of people in it? Once the "pixel embargo" ends anyway.
zultch
I saw it twice and constantly listen to the sound track on my phone. It's very good. They raised tattoos.... listen..... 1/x
when you get a tattoo, it is actually a colored scar that is elevated off your skin
if you rub your finger on a tattoo, parts of it may be raised and you can feel the bumps and lines of the art 3/x
if you pay attention in the movie. the big dude with all the tattoo's in the light had shadows casted by his tattoos. 4/x
Disney fucking THOUGHT of that shit. and added it. Such a minor attention to detail. It blew me away. It's the best visual movie they made
MageRights
I've heard it's just like Lord of the Rings.
ProphetOfTheFirstClaw
Wonderful Soundtrack!
Went mainly for Lin-Manuel Miranda
Me too!
Includeasourceorshutup
Eh.... It's okay.
Misora
Great visuals. Great music. People are saying they cried but I didn't find it overly sad or saccharine. Definitely not a tear jerker.
I'll admit I was getting choked up and I can't even tell you exactly why. Probably a parallel to the uncertainty in her life and in mine.
I cried during Happy Feet so don't use me as a yardstick.

The visuals are gorgeous, the characters are nice and the songs are catchy. What threw me off a bit was the story. All over the place.
Totally agree. Really beautiful and touching overall, but lacking in the story compartment.
Yeah, [SPOILERS] the lava monster turning into the Green Giant felt very rushed and left me disappointed
Yeah and the irony is that was one of the more interesting turn of events (at least to me) and it still felt underwhelming.
It would have been cool if there was a plot twist that the sentient ocean was the villain and was luring Moana to sea from a young age imo
As someone who grew up with Maui legends it made perfect sense. Now realising without that knowledge you may have had to make a few leaps.
Nah, that wasn't exactly my problem. It was more that certain things didn't go anywhere. Like those coconut thingies. Big buildup, one 1/
he was in. Especially after I saw in the Artbook what was planned for that place. The story just seemed like plotpoint, plotpoint, 3/
Scene, never to be seen again. Then the encounter with the giant crab was cool but I would have wished to see more of that monster realm 2/
Plotpoint. It didn't get time to breathe imo (except at the beginning and the end) and somehow they tried to cram too much stuff in there4/4
True. I could have done without the pirate coconuts to get more Tamatoa.
dasklaus
Can someone tell my stupid friend what movie this is?

For some reason they've named it Vaiana here in Scandinavia
I think because there's some porn star named Moana there? Or am I thinking of somewhere else I've heard a fact about...
mimicracra
Yes, in Italy.
There were some copyright issues with the name Moana outside the US so some international versions are Vaiana.
As a 36 year old scientist. It was huhmazing. I've listened to the soundtrack on loop for a month. And I've almost got the lyrics nailed!
Same here. Stumbled on the songs by accident making a Pandora station for my daughter. Had to see the movie after that.
As an also-a-scientist who never really cared for Disney, I've got the same loop running. I can't get over how well executed it was.
Huzzah!
I've got "your welcome" almost 100% nailed.
kipnitch
Yes, I play it for my students during work time a lot.
boogerzombie
Such an AMAZING soundtrack. My husband and I couldn't get it out of our heads for weeks!!
It really is! And this tapestry here on my skin! Is a map of the victories I win!! I'm too shiny.....
sneakysneakydemon
Fun fact, it was written by the same guy that wrote the musical Hamilton! He also sang in one of the songs!
KaneVel
*Co-written. There were two other composers as well. But you can really hear his influence on tracks like "You're Welcome"
I cannot stop listening to "Shiny". I may be biased towards Jemaine Clement's voice, though.
It's so good!
He was a great surprise - I had no idea he was in it going in. Turns out the song was written with him in mind.
Tamatoa is without a doubt the number one best part of the whole movie
ThePalfrak
Turns out "The Rock" has an incredible singing voice too!!
thrashedbarrier
Seriously I would buy his album if he had one
Oigirlboigirl
It's called auto-tune. A friend of mine worked on the movie.

Smackdown Hotel was his best work.

Nah he's cool as shit. I'm jsut saying that everything else about the movie was so damn good but the rock was well... very meh
lullabipops
The Rock was fantastic, but his vocals were most likely very enhanced but still a sexy voice if i do say so myself
DavidCisme
He did a pretty good song in Get Shorty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwReSCGL3ss
This is so terrible it's wonderful. And his voice is great! +1
dukenukemforpresident
Look at the behind the scenes I don't think there was much enhancement done
LiterallyYourMom
He's always been a pretty good natural singer.
BalrogDestroyer
Dude. Polys always have great voices. Genetic fucking magic. Sat thru a few church meetings with them. Like being in heaven.
It's more to do with the fact that the song was specifically written for him, and his vocal range.
[deleted]
TubaBandito
I dunno it's not like he was signing the Aria for the Queen of the Night
Lin-Manuel Miranda listened to him singing on WWE a bunch to figure his vocal range and such before he writing the song.
I love that Lin-Manuel was a huge Rock fan growing up, and Dwayne is a total fanboy for Lin-Manuel's work.

IProvideFakeContext
Everyone says the hair is great, but I was most impressed with the sea. Top kek.

It's probably my favorite Disney movie
ForSomeAbstractReason
It is actually done with ultra high detail and definition, so if you have one of those super fancy theaters, it will make you eyegasm.
ForSomeAbstractReason
SeeMyVests
They are incredibly realistic, I gasped at how striking it looked on the big screen. Excellent job!
DidItForScience
As a Hawaiian, I'm afraid to watch it in case Disney wrecked up the cultural aspect. I should probably look up some reviews.
Pwnyo
My Hawaiian friends loved it, so hopefully will be fine :) it's also Polynesian not explicitly Hawaiian so less risk of cultural fuckups
masochisticgiggler
I might have seen it 4 times... never have I ever gone to see a movie 4 times.
Pwnyo
Same!
DarkSock
My kids drug me to it; it was better than I thought it would be for sure. Same with Kubo and the two strings

Kubo was super awesome. Especially when Kubo irritates the monkey.

Again but it's worth watching at least once. I know the movie is made for kids but this one annoyed me more than most. 2/2

You talkin the shiny song? I think that was there as a tribute for the flight of the concords guy/voice actor who did Fart in Rick&morty
GeeeButtersnaps

The damn hair physics alone make me want to watch it. But I've heard it's pretty good.
batosai33
Screw the hair physics. The water physics are literally revolutionary
Caldaque
I remember everyone freaking out about the hair effects in the Final Fantasy movie back in '01. Things have come a long way.

They had a team dedicated exclusively to hair. It's awesome.
deevonimon
The scene where Moana's hair is covered in sand made me say "Damn! That must have taken forever to bake! " Always pushing the envelope.

HughWattmeight
Not mentioning Tangled?
LooseyGooseyBrett
Different effects
Ryebread91
What do you mean different effects? Different company or engine?
FBIhere
Also different studios. Tangled was straight Disney. Monster's Inc and Brave were Pixar.
TheAxeNinja
Every CG Disney movie is testing new stuff. Moana was the more wild hair that didn't require resets. Great animation and great film
dragonthc
Brave didn't age well since their experimental CGI.
TheAxeNinja
Brave was another hair test. Imagine it now with the Moana tech
somenub755
Brave didn't age well? How the fuck can a movie not age well? Charlie Chaplin still looks great.

That's an odd one to start from.

Tangled is definitely my favourite. I like your kids.
delfin05
This movie bumped tangled to my number 2 spot.
MrtheOffender
That's pretty high praise... nothing will top Lion King but Frozen was pretty good
IrrationalEd
Many kids like plots too.
fragtore
I didn't mean that there is less story but that the story is targeting another crowd
Biteymcbiteface
Norwegian*
GrouchyMarx
Interestingly, Jynx is based off of Nordic (So, also Norwegian) legends about a black-skinned, blond siren that lured people into blizzards.
Biteymcbiteface
I have never heard this legend and I'm a nordic person that have studied... Well nordic legends. Any name for the myth?

If Tangled can be 1st favourite, Frozen should be like... Maybe 87. I'm 24,male, and Tangled makes me cry everytime. Just my opinion though.
fragtore
Is that auto good though? Inside out makes me cry too but it's because it's lazy/cheese and deliberately trying hard for it
DrAMcC
tangled was the shit man, never got why frozen was so liked, but i bloody loved tangled, 23 male, maybe it just appeals to our demographic
Flyndaran
Complex story vs. ear-worm songs and easily marketable mascots?
Joetortillas

Disney fucking THOUGHT of that shit. and added it. Such a minor attention to detail. It blew me away. It's the best visual movie they made

Radoonichan
Totally agree. Really beautiful and touching overall, but lacking in the story compartment.
ZacharyComstock
Yeah, [SPOILERS] the lava monster turning into the Green Giant felt very rushed and left me disappointed
Radoonichan
Yeah and the irony is that was one of the more interesting turn of events (at least to me) and it still felt underwhelming.
ZacharyComstock
It would have been cool if there was a plot twist that the sentient ocean was the villain and was luring Moana to sea from a young age imo
AmaIthea
As someone who grew up with Maui legends it made perfect sense. Now realising without that knowledge you may have had to make a few leaps.

Nah, that wasn't exactly my problem. It was more that certain things didn't go anywhere. Like those coconut thingies. Big buildup, one 1/

Scene, never to be seen again. Then the encounter with the giant crab was cool but I would have wished to see more of that monster realm 2/
inutsume
Plotpoint. It didn't get time to breathe imo (except at the beginning and the end) and somehow they tried to cram too much stuff in there4/4
AmaIthea
True. I could have done without the pirate coconuts to get more Tamatoa.
dasklaus
Can someone tell my stupid friend what movie this is?
pitiflus
Moana
dasklaus
Thanks!

For some reason they've named it Vaiana here in Scandinavia
masochisticgiggler
I think because there's some porn star named Moana there? Or am I thinking of somewhere else I've heard a fact about...
mimicracra
Yes, in Italy.
halborski
There were some copyright issues with the name Moana outside the US so some international versions are Vaiana.
boobookittyfluck
As a 36 year old scientist. It was huhmazing. I've listened to the soundtrack on loop for a month. And I've almost got the lyrics nailed!
halborski
Same here. Stumbled on the songs by accident making a Pandora station for my daughter. Had to see the movie after that.
AdrianoDAlessandro
As an also-a-scientist who never really cared for Disney, I've got the same loop running. I can't get over how well executed it was.
boobookittyfluck
Huzzah!
babbzilla
I've got "your welcome" almost 100% nailed.
kipnitch
Yes, I play it for my students during work time a lot.
boogerzombie
Such an AMAZING soundtrack. My husband and I couldn't get it out of our heads for weeks!!
boobookittyfluck
It really is! And this tapestry here on my skin! Is a map of the victories I win!! I'm too shiny.....
sneakysneakydemon
Fun fact, it was written by the same guy that wrote the musical Hamilton! He also sang in one of the songs!
KaneVel
*Co-written. There were two other composers as well. But you can really hear his influence on tracks like "You're Welcome"
deevonimon
I cannot stop listening to "Shiny". I may be biased towards Jemaine Clement's voice, though.
boobookittyfluck
It's so good!
IrrationalEd
He was a great surprise - I had no idea he was in it going in. Turns out the song was written with him in mind.
thetonestarr
Tamatoa is without a doubt the number one best part of the whole movie
ThePalfrak
Turns out "The Rock" has an incredible singing voice too!!
thrashedbarrier
Seriously I would buy his album if he had one
Oigirlboigirl
It's called auto-tune. A friend of mine worked on the movie.
neonoptic
Smackdown Hotel was his best work.
6Oh4
He showed his talent with singing on wwe many times. Dude is talented as hell.
MacSuibhne13
This makes me wonder, does @TheBOULDER sing?
StrangelyCalm
He sure does! Have a listen to this! https://youtu.be/GhcTxZY2Pig

Lol witf lmfao
ThePalfrak
I hope many, many people are lucky enough to click that link
exguerrero
The rock was the worst part of the whole movie.
AmaIthea
Couldn't you smell what he was cooking?
unshartedterritory
Booooooooooo!!!!!!
Joetortillas
A lot of us disagree, cheers.

Rip this comment
GuanglaiKangyi
The rock is the best part of reality in general, though
exguerrero
Nah he's cool as shit. I'm jsut saying that everything else about the movie was so damn good but the rock was well... very meh
lullabipops
The Rock was fantastic, but his vocals were most likely very enhanced but still a sexy voice if i do say so myself
DavidCisme
He did a pretty good song in Get Shorty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwReSCGL3ss
JudgeNotByTheColorOfOnesSkinButByTheContentsOfOnesDumps
This is so terrible it's wonderful. And his voice is great! +1
dukenukemforpresident
Look at the behind the scenes I don't think there was much enhancement done
LiterallyYourMom
He's always been a pretty good natural singer.
BalrogDestroyer
Dude. Polys always have great voices. Genetic fucking magic. Sat thru a few church meetings with them. Like being in heaven.
KaneVel
It's more to do with the fact that the song was specifically written for him, and his vocal range.

TubaBandito
I dunno it's not like he was signing the Aria for the Queen of the Night
KaneVel
Lin-Manuel Miranda listened to him singing on WWE a bunch to figure his vocal range and such before he writing the song.
ForSomeAbstractReason
I love that Lin-Manuel was a huge Rock fan growing up, and Dwayne is a total fanboy for Lin-Manuel's work.
