Uninformed thought: it looks like they’re noting which frame (and if a frame is reused) of character animation is being used for each image. If you look closely it looks like the letters/numbers are repeated when the same facial expression/pose is reused.
Kinda cool actually, didn’t know it was that structured at that point in the process.

That's correct - it also includes versions for some frames - if there were frame-specific revisions.
