Tomorrow here in Australia 2 of our states have been officially put in a state of emergency. I live in nsw but currently live in a town that have no fires near by as of yet. There are out of control fires all up the coast of nsw and queensland. Tomorrow we have predicted 40° heat with 40kmph winds. Our whole town is engulfed in very thick smoke.
But thats nothing compared to the lives that have been lost. The homes that have been destroyed so far. And this isn't even our weathers final form!
We have lost lots of our wildlife aswel. And yes that included koalas.
Anyone in the already effected areas please stay safe!
Please if you can head on over and donate. It will help those effected and those that will be. Please keep us in your thoughts.

Edit: here is a news article for anyone wanting to know more on the situation. There are currently over 60 fires burning in NSW.

Remember when people in the 90s said global warming won’t look like the world is on fire?
ElbowDeepInAJedi
And wasn't yesterday the first day on record that it did not rain anyplace in Australia?
monstermash1384
Yes.

I just read an article that Victoria is being warned about worse-than-black-Saturday, once-in-110-year heatwaves this summer. Meanwhile our
StarkRG
PM is angry about getting asked about his thoughts on how climate change is affecting these things. He doesn't want politics brought up.
NoUserNamesLeftToChooseFrom
He should have answered, he doesn’t want science brought up.
StarkRG
I think, to people like him, science IS politics. To people like me, though, people like him should have no say in anything.
StarkRG
Somewhat ironically, many of the people who are currently in the midst of these fires voted Liberal, keeping him in charge.
Gir45
Here in CA we emphasize, I think you guys have sent over mutual aid in previous years, hopefully we are able to reciprocate.
3KnucklesDeep
Prime minister said no.
th3guy
Empathize. Emphasize means to stress. Empathize is to share mutual feeling/understanding of emotion.
Gir45
Pre-coffee comment, damn it would have caught that after coffee.
SarcasticSpazz
According to Trump, these fires are caused by poor land management... My neighbors think it's because god is mad at the gays in California.
NoUserNamesLeftToChooseFrom
There’s been a cut back on funding for rakes.
SarcasticSpazz
I know this is Australia. Just talking wildfires in general
KingAardvark1st
I mean, in CA's case it is at least partially exacerbated by poor land management... mostly on federal land.
SarcasticSpazz
So what's causing it in Australia then?
Nalianna
inability to backburn (because of record hot days in a row)

In Australia, everything is trying to kill you. In this case, that would be record breaking weather.

They keep saying this is unprecedented. Except when a state of emergency was also declared in 2013. Forecast for Tuesday is b/n 31 and 34c
beardedballs
Where was is called in 2013?
DaisyfromDownunder
NSW - same state, same declaration, same reason. https://www.sydneyalert.nsw.gov.au/media-releases/2013/state-of-emergency-declared.html

Australia often sends its firefighters to help with Californian fires
BlueSpaceLizard
It's Australia. It's most definitely not it's first time.
blackrasputin
Yeah everyone like omg ca is on fire we need to declare a state of emergency. Me working retail 50 yards from the fire: Yes we’re open.
ElChupaNuggra
Combine the last DECADE of California Fires and it might match what they've had burned in this one fire.
TheElderBowls
doubt.
AgentLonewolf
Yeah but the difference is that this year the fires threatened to cross the Sepulveda Pass and burn LA proper.
TheWorstWeasley
Wildfires in California burned 101,313 ha in 2019, 766,439 ha in 2018, and 559,034 in 2017. Not a decade, but a lot
Tyroki
Besides, isn't California a perpetual dumpster fire these days?

at least fire takes out most of the other 97% of things in Australia that also want you dead
imspinning
Defenceless animals being burnt alive is hardly anything to smirk about you prick
AmirGarib
He talks mostly about the insects and spiders and snakes and koalas

1 million hectares of NSW bush destroyed so far. It’s fucking insane.
NitherNor
Puts it at around the 10th biggest set of known fires we've had. An area larger than the island of Cyprus.
AlexSomething
I wonder if it would be possible for my govt to send the 20+ fire fighting planes we got to help since we're short on forest fires atm.
whodathunkit
My cousin, SIL and a nephew are all volunteer firefighters out in this shit.

Wont work, they'll just get stronger, then be immune to fire!
YouKnowThatOneGuyWhoDidThatThing
That's a lot of 70's porn!
BellsTheorem
The trend towards bigger earlier and more frequent fires is happening here in California as well. We are about to leave the Paris Accord.
ambiwerra
The longer duration of the US and Aus fire seasons means we can’t share skilled personnel and heavy fire fighting materiel like we often do.
BellsTheorem
I hadn't thought of that. But yes I imagine that compounds the problem as well.
DarkAngelWarlord
whats a hectares?
SnailsAgainstTungstenSpheres
2.2 acres
Dagordae
About 2.5 acres. It’s a 100x100m square.
torillatavataan
A hectare is a hundred ares. Naturally.
mt77932
1,000,000 hectares is about 3800 square miles or 6100 square kilometers
DarkAngelWarlord
so its like half of australlia is on fire
Quisaxaderak
Nah, the outback alone is 2.5 million square miles. Australia is sneaky huge.
Silas007
hectares (ha) is a metric unit. 1 ha = 100m*100m ; 1 Mio ha = 10k sq km Seems you multiplied 3800 with 1.6 but should have squared so *2.56
TheWorstWeasley
10000 sq km
ProudAussie
Our gov gives our tax dollars away in foreign aid yet we get nothing when we have a disaster. State gov cut money towards the fire services
monstermash1384
It doesn't help that the greens stand in the way of back burning in the winter.
ProudAussie
Greens and Nationals hate humans.
TheDoctorAzAJ
The greens who have no political power on the mainland have prevented back burning? Can you tell me how they accomplished that?
monstermash1384
It is called an allegiance with labour and land clearing laws https://greens.org.au/qld/platform/protecting-nature
monstermash1384
Here is proof of Labor blostering said law https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2019-04-30/protecting-the-climate-or-environment-queensland-lan
monstermash1384
Just because the liberals are in power now doesn't mean that the greens/labour are not responsible somewhat. It takes years for brush to
AzraelEternity
Wishing all of the best. I hope that you receive international aid. The Aussies came to help us in California two years ago. We owe you.
DownVoteVerifier
It ain't about owing mate, when shit gets bad you dig in and help out.
AzraelEternity
No doubt. I'm just hoping they send you support from all over to get things under control.
NoUserNamesLeftToChooseFrom
Perspective: The area burnt is roughly the size of Cornwall, Devon and bit of Somerset.
PriestOfLordVote
From my experience staring at maps in Paradox games and Total War, I can say that it a lot of fucking fire.
torillatavataan
Please use international units. How much is it in Belgiums?
NoUserNamesLeftToChooseFrom
⅓ of Belgium.
amyhadalittlepond
As a Brit I appreciate this scale but for others can we have it in terms of washing machines?
CyranoDeBurlapSack
At least 2.
wheresthehill
Tumble dryers would probably be more appropriate.
TheWorstWeasley
About the size of Delaware and Rhode Island combined
TheCadian
*opens crusader kings* oh yeah, that looks pretty big
FallingStar7669
About one-third of Rhode Island, in Freedom Units.
NoUserNamesLeftToChooseFrom
Nope. All of Rhode Island and all of Delaware.
imgjim
That's tiny
[deleted]
[deleted]
NoUserNamesLeftToChooseFrom
Ahhh. No. It’s 10x the area on fire in NSW and Qld than California.
FallingStar7669
According to some quick googling, in the last week California has lost about 100,000 hectares of area to fire. Aus has lost 1,000,000.
WhereRebelsAre
Yeah, but how much in freedom units?
CyranoDeBurlapSack
About the same amount. Just a different number due to the exchange rate.
MrRareza
3 rhode islands, more or less.
wheresthehill
Do freedom units ever get abbreviated? 100fu may be misconstrued, for example.
AlmightyThor117
Still not a perspective I can understand but thanks
Voidwitch8
Yeah, I only understand measurements in Rhode Islands
ohDannyBoi
It's over 3 Rhode Islands.
thornofnight
Yes, but how many washing machines is that?
DeadArcadian
At least 6
BettyWhiteSupremacy
1.87million football fields
J0LTED
*249333333.333 washing machines*
matchstickmetropolis
haquie
Hoe big is that in Texas's?
jethroismaxbaer5772
1 million hectares is like 3 times the size of Dallas and Houston combined.
RandomIsotope
That's a big hoe
jethroismaxbaer5772
3,861 square miles.
Ewelderguy
how many washing machines is that?
zenoshogun
Could you give us that in Belgiums?
BahamutBBob
Handegg or hexball?
CMarshmallow
I'm not a sports dude, but that is astronomical
EnderPanda13
Queensland? Isn't that where Steve Irwin's zoo is? Is it ok? Sorry for the rest of Australia burning too :(
monstermash1384
Yes and as for now yes all is fine it is mostly NSW on fire ATM.
monstermash1384
I mean Steve Irwin's zoo is fine at the moment not the situation as a whole.
EnderPanda13
I hope it gets put out/goes out soon but I'm glad steves zoo is safe!
