Here are some videos from the SOI dive today/yesterday. Okay, today. The last hour. There was a glass octopus sighting and y'all need to see this.

Gross, a poralia! A pretend Tiburonia, and during Tiburonia-depths.

A mystery squid. Very stationary.

Excitement!

This is a fairly large gal.

Upside down siphonophore tax.

Edit: mistyped the first caption, this is absolutely a glass octopus.

Could we have, like, a banana for scale?

Is the glass octopus named Paige?

Damn, is it the fird already?

Is that glass octopuses internal organ (brain?) actually bio-luminescent? Or is it just picking up the submersible lights really well?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bioluminescence is typically very faint, everything you see here are just from the flood lighting behind the camera

I'm torn between wanting to learn everything I can about the ocean, yet also being completely terrified of it

I’m still going to call her Freckles.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

maybe they meant the 1teenth of November?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

so dope

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s the most beautiful dickheaded animal I’ve ever seen

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had such a hectic day today and seeing these little dudes just hanging around in the water I have to wonder what they have to do down there. Do they play? Or socialise? How do they while away the hours?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Almost all waking hours are spent lurking or eating something. Food is scarce, prey is wary, there are bigger predators about, so full focus is needed to survive.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They DANCE!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now imagine they were all 3 miles wide.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Glass Squid" looks very octopus like. 8 equal length arms?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

correct, it's a glass octopus, Ocean Conservancy has a few good photos where you catch the reflective nodes in their webbing, and you can easily identify it by the glowing organ in its head

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What is that flooring other anyway? Heart? Brain?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Absolute mistake, it's a glass octopus, Imgur is refusing to update the post right now. Midwater octopuses are not something I'm used to

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Damn plastics contamination! Look like that cephalopod accidentally swallowed a glo-in-the-dark dildo?

That siphonophore is very very scary.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think they meant the 1nd

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mystery squid looks like cthulu and a manatee had a baby

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing

I come to this site for this kind of content, but came to the comments for "fird".

See, I saw that I missed that chance, but then I thought 'sixtold' would work better, and then I compromised and ate a peanut butter n jelly sandwich

Remember remember, the firstteenth of November

The tentacle treason and plot?!?!

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I should see no reason, that the cephalopodian treason should ever be forgot.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How deep were they?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, the first video shows some stats, one of which is depth. 757m = 2483.596 ft = 413.932 fathoms = 425.75 refrigerators.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Around 2000 meters down, but all of these videos are taken during the ascent of madness

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wonder if they ever turn the lights off so they can see if any have bioluminescence?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This has been done in the past, frequently it's very informative!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Delightful!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s sooo pretty - thanks for sharing! Though I’m starting to miss the Tiburonias…

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Not including Imgur, they've only been seen 23 times ever, so we'll probably never see them again...

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I'll never tire of this joke

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I too crave brunch, maybe not as much as someone on a long ass science deep water boat ride.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do animals that deep have sensitive eyes? I feel like shining anything on them is like us looking into the sun.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If they were upset by the light, they'd avoid it. And fun fact, on the sonar you can see a large amount of biomass avoiding the ROV

This is the kind of post where i would start an acct just to thank you. Thank you @OP for posting. I especially like the conditional data.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am thrilled to see this, thank you!

Yep, and then the 4nd

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Unrelated, but as a kid I thought 4WD on a car was a fancy way of spelling "forward". Which totally made sense, that's the general direction cars go most of the time, right?
