“I'm a Christian, and we go to an evangelical church (my wife is evangelical, but I'm not. But we believe a lot of the same things) but I'm also a red-blooded American who believes in the America the founding fathers created. A SECULAR government with separation of church and state and no preference for one religion over another.
And I would remind my fellow Christians that America was NOT founded on the Christian religion or "Christian" values. And I would challenge them to tell me what Christian values this country was founded on that aren't also Jewish values and Hindu values and Muslim values.
Finally, I would like to give you a little nugget from the Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli, which begins: "As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion..."
This was unanimously ratified by the US senate (which had 5 founding fathers at the time) and signed into law by founding father and president John Adams!
America is NOT a Christian nation it was not founded on Christian values. It was founded on universal values of freedom, justice and liberty. And if you can't appreciate that, then what you love is NOT the United States, but some fictional country that has never existed.”

The worrying thing that comes out from that photograph is how low the average age is (20-25?). Christofascism for the next 50 years.

This. I always roll my eyes at people who think this trend in neofascism and extreme conservativism is a "boomer" disease. If you think >

akspartankiiier
I’m Christian Baptist and these guys scare the snot out of me

As a Christian I attend an Anglican church with a strong evangelical angle. But there is a massive difference between evangelism and 2/

the type of fundamentalist evangelism that is so predominant in the US. The whole point of spreading the gospel is with love, not a hammer.

Went to Liberty University just to go. Yeah that place is all brainwashed. Their hold message was "If it's Christian it MUST be better!"
messiemillie
That place is terrifying.
KungFuFlounder
I'd like to thank the local "Independent Fundamentalist Baptist" (their self proclaimed label) for guiding me toward Atheism.

That’s the baptists I fear. They told me I was going to hell because I’m Lutheran…BITCH MY RELIGION IS THE REASON YOU EXIST!
KungFuFlounder
IFB: "If you're not us you're going to HELL". They teach so many things that make me want to ask if they've ever heard of Jesus.

My uncle is a lutheran minister and he opened my eyes and heart to other religions. Truly the most "Christian" christian i know.

RIGHT?!!! ELCA Lutherans are probably the most Christian Christian religion you’ll find.

lcms and wels should scare you just as bad
tirohtar
For most Lutherans they definitely do (especially as a non-US, German Lutheran, lcms and wels are sth like we had 200+ years ago... Crazies)
Hotsauceman
ICMS and Wels?
tirohtar
WELS=Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, LCMS=Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Two ultra-conservative Lutheran denominations in the US. 1/
Hotsauceman
I wanted to be sure. I called them Wisconsin and Missouri. I’m ELCA and we were the first in the US churches to say, “gays are cool”
tirohtar
They have their origin in German ultra-conservative Lutherans who refused to go along with the mergers of the Protestant denominations 2/

A triple dipper!
AxelBeingCivil
Prayer meetings like this tend to be more about being a meet-and-greet and a way to show common values. They're ways to build effective (1)
AxelBeingCivil
political action and advocacy groups, because everyone who shows up to one is ostensibly already committed to the ideas and willing to (2)
AxelBeingCivil
sacrifice at least a little time and perhaps money for the cause. You've got to think of it less in terms of immediate action and more (3)
AxelBeingCivil
in terms of being a recruitment drive for future efforts. (4)
