Never trust indicators, always wait for them to be gone. Mum did it once, someone indicating to turn left whilst she was waiting like in this example. She pulled out, guy plowed right into the side of her. He'd just left his indicator on, he had no intentions of turning.
Now she'll wait until the cars are definitely passed or far away enough for her to pull out, it pisses off traffic behind us but better safe than totalled.

even if the green car had a turn signal showing their intention to turn, I WOULD STILL WAIT. there are too many idiots who don't know how to use signals or change their minds and then don't cancel the signal. it's not a race to see who gets to the finish line first. it's a contest to see how often each can get out on the road, do their business and then get home safe.

If you don't have the room to make the safe left, don't go until they're physically turning in. It's always worth waiting the extra 20 seconds to be sure so some dingus doesn't t-bone you because their blinker has been on for the last two miles and they weren't actually going to turn.

I never had to teach mine, but I would tell them to treat everyone like their morons. However, they got to see it first hand. Had a car pass another car at 65 which they passed me (one on the right shoulder, the other in the left lane). Someone merged facing me into my lane at a red light to turn left (my right). And that's just what I can remember off hand.

My uncle (Vietnam era chopper pilot) taught me that "every other driver is trying to kill you (e.g., trick you with their blinker to draw you out so they can ram you) so drive accordingly." Best driving advice ever. 40+ years of zero accident but a lot of other drivers proving him right.

What about stop signs? People will sit for 5 seconds waiting for me to reach the four way stop, apparently to make sure I’m actually going to stop. So now I have to wait for them the clear the intersection when they could have been gone before I got there.

4 way stops are awful, but only because people never seem to understand who has the right-of-way (ROW).
1) Whoever stops first, has ROW, and goes first.
2) If whoever has ROW goes straight, the opposite side may also go straight, or yield to ROW to turn left
3) Any cars perpendicular to ROW go next, based on who stopped first. Go back to 1). Repeat.

I don't go unless they wave or flash their lights to let me go (lots of people do that if traffic is insane and they want to be nice), but I keep in mind who is behind them. Plenty of assholes who will zoom around a car in the other lane.

I mean, maybe if they are only 1 second away, but this person’s illustration clearly depicts a scenario where you have plenty of time/space to merge without high risk of an accident, but it would merely inconvenience the advancing driver by causing them to unduly slow down. 2nd driver was trying to be polite, not avoid an accident, and that politeness was shat on because 1st driver couldn’t be bothered to turn on an indicator.

SO TRUE! I work at a lake and people drink and drive often. Never assume; the number one spot where accidents occur here is at a stop sign that enters a road with a very high-speed limit. More often than not someone pulls out too early and they get T boned. So please do not risk it! Stay SAFE.

Yep. Oftentimes it's just someone who forgot to turn their signal off after changing lanes or something like that - so never trust a signal.
What this means is that turn signals are basically useless - but only for the vehicle in front of you. The main purpose of turn signals is for any car *behind* you, to let them know you're slowing down.

P.S. to follow up - perhaps I was a bit hyperbolic there. From a *legal* standpoint they're generally useless; however it's still a good thing to do from a courtesy standpoint. Even though it's not a good idea to trust turn signals - some people do - and thus it's still a good courtesy to use yours, and that's a good thing. (However don't, under any circumstances, "change your mind" and go straight after using your signal. If you realize you're at the wrong road - turn anyway, and retrace)

I was guilty of this recently and the driver honked and yelled at me as I was turning. However, all the context clues that I was turning were there. I slowed down significantly, pulled to the right side of the lane to execute a turn, and then turned carefully. I think he would have trusted me if I had my blinker on, but I dont trust anyone until they are committed to an action fully. So F that guy.

I never assume to know what a driver plans to do. So I'll go when I think there's enough time/space that I can do so apparently. But if I see a signal, that means I should have a little more time. I still won't go if I don't think I could gun it to safely avoid getting hit if they turned out to not be turning, though.

So this was as I was waiting at a stop sign at a roomy intersection: The crossing street's curb was angled in toward the intersection, but not enough to make for an actual turning lane. They had their right turn signal on, the front of their car dipped a bit as they slowed, the front wheels started to turn, and THEN they swerved back to keep going straight. That was a close call.

I'm blind in one eye, so I cannot perceive depth properly- I rather wait and not need to than risk anything. Other safe drivers probably do the same. With that said, I think it's worth acknowledging that, unless the road is extraordinarily flat and straight, one will not be able to see an approaching car for a full 30 seconds- that is an insane distance / time on a road. (At 30mph, for example, you're talking about a full quarter mile to work with, or >1300ft)

You're vastly underestimating how long 30 seconds is. You've basically waited a full light cycle at a T intersection. If you need that long to make a turn, you're never turning, because any car within a quarter mile going 30mph is going to reset the timer.
