I looked at a lot of them. I didn't want anything too sexy, too happy, too childish, too heavy, etc. I ended up using an obscure one called DisasterPEACE, which is a mechanically lighter Forged in the Dark system with influence from PbtA. The dice pools got too large when PCs transformed, but I worked around the issue.

One of my favorite parts was giving the group a former magical girl mentor who was all tough love and concealed the truth from them, then later a big, happy, kind mentor. whom they loved.
They eventually discovered the kind mentor was using them and the harsh mentor was actually helping, so rejected the kind mentor.
But when it came to the final confrontation, they realized manipulative, kind mentor actually was making sense in a fucked-up way.

I'd say its *somewhat* on the same level as maybe parasyte, summertime rendering or even tokyo revengers if you have watched any of those.
If you could make it through made in abyss you can definitely make it through madoka

Parasyte is very good. Some hard hitting moments but doesnt overstay its welcome. 5/5
Revengers is more of a hit or miss for me. the protag is kind of a wuss and a crybaby and its one of those animes where most problems could be solved if only anime characters could engage in clear communication. Still worth the watch though. 3/5

I like to pitch it to people as being to magical girls what evangelian is to robot shows. Starts out feeling cookie-cutter, then adds in way more violence and trauma and serious themes (all played completely straight) than you'd ever expect, while also constantly subverting the expected tropes of that kind of show.
