A sword was stolen from the famous "Shermer" sculpture in Wrocław. A 24-year-old woman was detained on the spot.
In Wrocław, one of the symbols of the city, the "Shermer" fountain (Fontanna "Szermierz") on University Square (Plac Uniwersytecki) near the University of Wrocław (Uniwersytet Wrocławski), was once again damaged. On Saturday, at around 3:30 a.m., employees of the Wrocław City Guard (Straż Miejska Wrocławia) detained a 24-year-old woman who was dismantling the sword from the sculpture.

Was that a replica of 'her' sword? *Xena's?*
PurpleFuzzyDots
Nope. Xena didn't have that brown guard on her sword and the hilt is way bigger. Beautiful woman just looks good with a real sword.

Fair 'nuff:) I forget... was it a special sword or just a sword she liked?

It's hard to make an arrest when you're laughing
TheDoctorCrankenstein
Because cops don't stop crime; they only respond to it and enforce punishment. ACAB.
IMarkEverythingISayAsNSFWBecauseModsDontKnowWhatMatureMeans
NSFW Because it's up to consequences and people's moral compass to stop crime. Most minor crimes (theft, burglary, vandalism, etc.) don't have a "you didn't do it but I swear you were about to" law. Although Britain does have "going equipped" laws that mean police can arrest people that have, for example, empty plastic tubs and tubing hanging around a lorry car park because they're clearly there to siphon petrol.
barefootguru
Then they can make it theft/vandalism rather than just climbing on a statue.
LupusLilium
Probably easier to charge 'actual theft' vs 'intent'.

So let me get this straight… they made a statue with a detachable sword and expected it to be left alone!!!??? 😳

So many people don't realise, that you can just buy a sword.
Redshadow09
yeah but you dont know the quality of the sword and could be sent a shit sword that bends and or breaks on just the smallest push back. then what do you have a bent broken sword. Swords are expensive and people dont have the money to buy such a weapon. If it was cheap and good quality then maybe

Yeah and a decorative statue is very likely to have a good quality sword?

I literally just read about this. Sculptor lost too many hands at cards when he was a student at the university, eventually bet his clothes and lost again, but his friends let him keep his sword. Designed/donated the statue to the university as a cautionary tale. Students steal it from time to time. Last I had heard it had been replaced by a plastic one to prevent stealing, but I guess it's back now
dedpan
This is apparently so common that they've put a replica sword in and made sure it's easily removed so the statue isn't damaged in the process.

Public shame is a form of harassment that can have unintended destructive consequences for people's lives. Shame belongs in safe private spaces.
itwasababyox
Nah, social shame is a powerful motivator and evolved into us for a reason.
Avilan1972
Shame is a medieval punishment that don't belong in civilized countries.
itwasababyox
False! Shame is a natural emotion, one obviously present before medieval times. Maybe what youre thinking of is just Christian "shame" bullshit.
Avilan1972
No, shaming as a punishment is a medieval phenomenon not belonging in civilized societies.

Girls: “im gonna take that sword” DM: “You can certainly try”
RecurringNightmare
true, theft charges wont stick...and as the sword was only loosely attached there was nothing damaged, so vandalism also wont stick...mischief its gonna be, small fine, nice memories, good story to tell your kids...
evilspock
That's why they throw "attempted" in front.
If you are found guilty of "attempted murder", you don't get a selfie with the judge and go home.
This was theft and vandalism. Maybe trespass. The fact that they had it for all of 20 seconds is immaterial.
RecurringNightmare
its not about attempted or successful...theft is about leaving with the thing and keeping it...they can easily claim they just wanted to fool around with it and then put it back...nearly impossible to prove intent to keep the sword, so theft wont stick...
evilspock
Somif someone breaks into your home and the police catch them with the sack of jewels but they haven't quite left yet, you think that's not theft?
If this gets to court - theft, vandalism, tresspassing. You might think theft won't stick, but the second they grabbed that sword they don't own and took it, that's the "taking" in "unlawful taking". Unless they can prove it had little legs and can move itself.
RecurringNightmare
the planning of bringing a sack to carry the jewels away indicates intent to keep them...but yes, the police catching someone in my home is just breaking and entering to that point, and if i didnt lock the door its not even breaking, just entering...proving theft is another step thats harder to manage, which is part of the reason "breaking and entering" is a crime, because otherwise everyone would sniff around other peoples properties and claim "i was just looking around"...
evilspock
Let me put it differently.
You go to your local big box store. Take item, put it in your pocket, and saunter out pas the check-stands. The security guy stops you before you left the building. Turns out pockets, and hey, unpaid for merch.
Yeah. That's theft. Unlawful *taking*. They give you the benefit of the doubt if you bring it up and pay for it, but the's no magical minimum distance that suddenly turns it into theft - shoplifting to be exact. Nor can you just say "oopsie I'll pay now".
RecurringNightmare
the part where you walk past the registers without paying and try to leave is where it becomes (attempted) theft...just grabbing something in a store and hiding it in your pocket is suspicious and will make the store detective follow you around, but they gotta wait for you to actually attempt to leave without paying, until then its not a crime...

Stone men standing in fountains distributing swords is no basis for a system of government!
Fentex
It's a fun joke but FYI: Excalibur is NOT the sword in the stone, which Arthur drew out and was proclaimed King for doing so. Excalibur is a different sword gifted to Arthur by the lady of the lake. Bonus fact: Merlin is actually Odin - a kinda-of Celtic corruption of Norse mythology and Excalibur may be (through a series of translations/re-tellings a riff on his Spear Gungnir).

I like how they took their knee-high boots off before stepping in to the ankle-deep water, even though they are specifically designed to keep your feet dry in precisely such an environment... Then after their arrest, they're having to put their wet feet back in to the boots, soaking the interior instead.
Avilan1972
If you think leather boots are made to wade in water with you need to spend some time learning about... well a lot of stuff.
NM156
But especially leather boots!
SteadyBread
It's not waterproof. Submerging them will get both inside and outside entirely soaked. Their method gets the boot much less wet, and only on the inside instead of both.
Dansosaur
Honestly I wasn't paying that much attention when I first came across the post and the water appeared ankle-deep to me, but coming back to it, it does look deeper than that, so you're likely right and the water would probably get in through the zipper.
HamSlamwich
Do you know what leather is?
Dansosaur
Yes. Did you miss the part where they got the INTERIOR wet instead? Most boots are coated on the outside to prevent minor water damage, otherwise they'd be ruined the second you stood in a single puddle, or it began to rain.
PragmaticPrimate
Yup, with emphasis on "minor". Most boots won't protect the insides if you step in ankle high water. Especially not the ones that come with zippers at the side. I'd rather put my damp feet into a pair of boots than have them completely filled with water.
Dansosaur
That's true, but getting the interior damp is a fantastic way to completely ruin a decent pair of leather boots due to mold, as the interior is completely unprotected & difficult to dry. "Minor" means that you should avoid getting them constantly soaked. They ARE allowed to get wet every now & again, you simply wipe them down when you get home. You don't have to fear every puddle you encounter... Unless you're wearing suede!
Dansosaur
But yes, it does look deep enough to get in through the zipper, so you're absolutely correct!
