Other side of the coin is that many marginalized groups found community and a voice online when before the internet the truly lived secret lives all their lives. My conservative mother is convinced homosexuality and transgender people are a modern invention of communists/soros because she never encountered such things when she was young, unwilling to even consider how the internet affected the cultural/social/political landscape.

It took me researching trans issues for one of my clients, at age 30, when I realized "oh maybe this trans stuff applies to me too?" That was 6 years ago now. My supporting community back then was 100% transphobic, too, so the internet was really the only educational source I had at the time.

Sure, but who is doing more harm? I'm not seeing waves of transgender people declaring war on humanity, but there are "those idiots" doing just that, and also hurting everyone else in the process. If we regulate the internet, some marginalized people will lose their community, but five times as many Fascist will as well. De-platforming Nazis serves everyone, and once they're gone you can find your online communities, or maybe you won't need to.

It's not about harm, in their case. It's about community. Knowing they are not alone. Not 'abnormal'.
Yes, the Internet has given stupidity a voice. But it also told these marginalized groups, "you're not alone; we're the same as you", and validated their existence. LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent people are mentioned, but are far from the only groups of people helped by such support networks.

True. Back in the day, we didn't have autism, just families with 3-4-5 children and one of them stayed locked inside, coming out only on Sundays to go to mass, for the Lord to help him. No gender confusion either, you just assumed the role assigned to you in birth and if you weren't lucky, you just had to spend your whole life in a lie to make everyone around you happy.

Your example would work except that never happened. You're making a right wing talking point about autism that has no basis in reality. Some, a few, handfuls of autistic children might have been hidden away, but by the modern definition most of them just got on with their lives and up until very recently some became tech billionaires with little comment. Severe autism has been recognised and treated for decades.

Its referring to the extremely common antivaxxer talking point that autism didn't exist and/or wasn't diagnosed in today's numbers until the advent of vaccination schedules. This argument is made in ignorance to improvements made in diagnostic criteria, availability, and general social discourse informing more people about autism, often on the internet. Its a very fitting comparison to what I'm speaking about in my original comment.

Sorry, outright open racism was rare but it never left a sizable chunk of people. The amount of non-black racial slurs I've heard people use in jokes, in angry moments, or when they thought I could be trusted with their internal hate because I'm a white guy, has never decreased. The number of people I continue to associate with has decreased but theyve been there the whole time.

Well I have been watching F1 for a long time and there never any racists but me. Then Verstappen started racing, and now all of a sudden all my Dutch colleagues are racists. Purely because he started racing. My colleagues dont care about racing at all, they only care because he's Dutch. I bet when verstappen retires from Formula 1, all my Dutch colleagues stop being racists and stop caring about F1 alltogether.
