The wonderful thing about the internet is that it allows everyone to speak their mind. The shttiest thing about the internet is that it allows everyone to speak their mind.
And idiots like Joe Rogan are giving more and more of them platforms. There are also grifters who use these platforms to make money off of the idiots too.
Yeah, I feel like pre-social media algorithms the nuts and village idiots were finding each other, but no one was being converted into a village idiot. Now you watch a clip about the bigfoot episode of Futurama, then it feeds you a Harry and the Hendersons clip, then a Bigfoot Hunters clip and clips from decreasingly sane sources until you're convinced the earth is flat.
Not just that, but some smart people have figured out they can make money scamming them or gain power manipulating them, so they've generated whole bot nets to emulate stupid people so the idiots think there's a majority echo chamber online.
Other side of the coin is that many marginalized groups found community and a voice online when before the internet the truly lived secret lives all their lives. My conservative mother is convinced homosexuality and transgender people are a modern invention of communists/soros because she never encountered such things when she was young, unwilling to even consider how the internet affected the cultural/social/political landscape.
It took me researching trans issues for one of my clients, at age 30, when I realized "oh maybe this trans stuff applies to me too?" That was 6 years ago now. My supporting community back then was 100% transphobic, too, so the internet was really the only educational source I had at the time.
Sure, but who is doing more harm? I'm not seeing waves of transgender people declaring war on humanity, but there are "those idiots" doing just that, and also hurting everyone else in the process. If we regulate the internet, some marginalized people will lose their community, but five times as many Fascist will as well. De-platforming Nazis serves everyone, and once they're gone you can find your online communities, or maybe you won't need to.
It's not about harm, in their case. It's about community. Knowing they are not alone. Not 'abnormal'.
Yes, the Internet has given stupidity a voice. But it also told these marginalized groups, "you're not alone; we're the same as you", and validated their existence. LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent people are mentioned, but are far from the only groups of people helped by such support networks.
Are you suggesting that I was suggesting any of that? I said nothing about harm; my only point is that the internet has been an important tool for connecting marginalized groups Sure it also connected various kinds of extremists but surely you didn't read my comment to be a comparison of the relative harm caused by either??
True. Back in the day, we didn't have autism, just families with 3-4-5 children and one of them stayed locked inside, coming out only on Sundays to go to mass, for the Lord to help him. No gender confusion either, you just assumed the role assigned to you in birth and if you weren't lucky, you just had to spend your whole life in a lie to make everyone around you happy. Tell your mother the numbers were always there, we're just casting light to the darkest corners of our society now.
Your example would work except that never happened. You're making a right wing talking point about autism that has no basis in reality. Some, a few, handfuls of autistic children might have been hidden away, but by the modern definition most of them just got on with their lives and up until very recently some became tech billionaires with little comment. Severe autism has been recognised and treated for decades.
Its referring to the extremely common antivaxxer talking point that autism didn't exist and/or wasn't diagnosed in today's numbers until the advent of vaccination schedules. This argument is made in ignorance to improvements made in diagnostic criteria, availability, and general social discourse informing more people about autism, often on the internet. Its a very fitting comparison to what I'm speaking about in my original comment.
You lost this, yet on here is no different. You try calling someone out, they just attack you, call you names, and block you so they don't have to face the repercussions of their actions. Hell, even when I am wrong in a comment, I leave it up, and my own acknowledgement of learning. I might be an asshole, but at least I'm not a city coward. It's one thing those manbabies and trump have in common 🤣
Not sure why you got downvoted here. If I’m reading this correctly, you’re saying that a) that shit happens here, too and b) when you say dumb shit, you try and learn from it rather than removing the evidence. Accurate?
I think this is very true. Same with racists. In the old days, there were not too many fans. Every now and then I'd meet one but they were scarce. Now with the internet they seem to form groups. Wearing those stupid Max Verstappen hats and Red Bull merch.
Plus every big social media platform is run by frauds who have massive amounts of bots spewing stupid propaganda that the idiots latch onto. They see 5 or 6 bots spewing the same shit and they think the masses are onto it. If the trump haters would get off TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, twitter, reddit, they'd lose a ton of money. Makes me upset every time I see someone criticize trump on twitter and they have a fucking blue checkmark they pay for, helping musk and his fraudulent acts
More like... something was cringe, like dressing yourself in commercials. But then the media made it acceptable to do so. Same with racists. So suddenly those racists got emboldened to do stuff in public which has always been pushed out by society. Society used to police itself. But now we're being policed by social media, thus by fucking billionaire algorhytms who capitalize on in-fighting.
Hahaha. Racist. I see what you did there. I’m also a longtime “racist” who is glad that there are more races for me to “ist” than there ever were!
Sorry, outright open racism was rare but it never left a sizable chunk of people. The amount of non-black racial slurs I've heard people use in jokes, in angry moments, or when they thought I could be trusted with their internal hate because I'm a white guy, has never decreased. The number of people I continue to associate with has decreased but theyve been there the whole time.
Ok but you were early adopter, thats ok. Its like being an Apple enthousianst when Wozniak was still there. Nothing like the later wave of Apple assholes.
Wtf are talking about racism was a Standard in the "old" days, i bet you are white thats why you dont saw it back them because it wasnt aginst you today we talk way more about it because it is still there it never went away in first place
Well I have been watching F1 for a long time and there never any racists but me. Then Verstappen started racing, and now all of a sudden all my Dutch colleagues are racists. Purely because he started racing. My colleagues dont care about racing at all, they only care because he's Dutch. I bet when verstappen retires from Formula 1, all my Dutch colleagues stop being racists and stop caring about F1 alltogether.
No, I get it, but he did suggest he was Dutch, so English might not be his first language. What if he was literally calling himself a racist like you might call people on bicycles "cyclists" and unknowingly making a fool of himself? Might as well mention it, anyway.
