Bergamo. The center of the pandemic here in Italy. My beloved city.
We have suffered so much. I even lost a friend only 31 years old.
People used to say "this whole nightmare will change us!". Not even close.
Italians are racist. Just deal with it. A lot of people avoided any chinese business in february. Maybe even marginalize Chinese people. Because - you know!- the have coronavirus! Better safe than sorry!
But now.. tables have turned. There are nations (e.g., Austria and Greece) that somehow limit access to italians. Guess what? Now the tipical Italian complains because the can't do this! A politician even said "we will remember that".
This is a genious. A man living in the street where I live. The whole lockdown spent en plein air, just don't giving a fuck, never wearing a mask. Because -HEY!- "I'm fine". A conspirancy man. An asshole.
Last week a picture has been published on the local media. A lot of schools are preparing for September, to let childrens back in class. They are doing something to help with the virus:
- classes with less students
- plexiglass panel on the desk, to limit the use of masks
Well, the genious is now complaining about this panels. "They won't stop the virus spreading in the air!!". You idiot.

Sadly there are idiots all over the world... and also sad they’re loud and ignorant.
pandur0815
Most of the people are aware of the situation, but you have these idiots in all countries. So stay safe, keep your distance to idiots.
cre8majic
all one can do is protect oneself, if it really comes down to that. Masks AND handwashing AND distancing must continue
GFYandyourstupidrequirements
It is both heartwarming and disheartening to understand that people are pretty much the same wherever you go.
likuidlightning
I believe the proper verbing of 'just don't give a fuck' is 'just don't give a fuck-ing' not 'just don't giving a fuck'.

I'm Asian and don't plan on travelling to Europe or America for the next 2 years at least. Not worth the hassle of being hassled on vacation
HenryLongfellowIII
Lots of great things to see in Asia. I'm going back to SEA, China and Japan .. so many things to see and do. Hopefully they don't hassle me.

When I worked over in Italy, I was rather shocked by the racism and ethnic prejudice expressed rather openly, even towards other Italians.

Esattamente. hai perso tutti i miei cari durante questo periodo e tutta l'ignoranza e i doppi standard mi fanno così arrabbiare. è strano
OlofBorrbrottsson
As a resident of “plaguetown” Stockholm, I can relate. Maybe I should visit Italy this summer, if you haven’t banned us Swedes ?
Hibbtygibitty
Sorry for your loss. Now you blame an entire country for being racist? Racism is everywhere. It knows no borders. You should look
Hibbtygibitty
At how Bergamot came to this. The soccer match ended up infecting 2 countries. So should we hate Spaniards as well. Even the

Reporter was unaware that he carried the virus. So is the blame with the Chinese open market? Or the officials that allowed the

Lack of sanitation? Trace it. Correct. Develop vaccine, then mandate all to use it. Bergamo & it’s people are not the villain.

Sending love from Canada. Was planing to visit Italy at the end of summer. Looks like I get to bum around south Alberta for my vacation

"Italians are racist. Just deal with it." no, no one should have to, thats why we are having such a big world wide issue over it now.

Casnigo is here! You will always find morons, just deal with It. La madre degli imbecilli è sempre incinta. Big hugs from a bergamasco!

One thing I do know being Italian myself is that we’re too stubborn for our own good sometimes.
minqapoc
Italy needs lots of fixing like the US, just in different areas...
Ambipolar
"We will remember that" He forgot that last time when Greece limited Italian access just fine.
ThePastmaster
"We will remember that." Like Europe remembers that one time you almost tanked the Euro?

Is it just me or do other people live in fear of the day when they sellout/ break up. They see too good to last

..and he "forgot" he was pressing for closing the airports in January. Politicians being politicians.
Papabadger
Last time when Greece limited Italian access the Wehrmacht came in.
Ambipolar
I was thinking that maybe Italy hopes the Germans will tell the Greeks to let them in (which could happen.. just very differently).

I am in FVG and we also are frustrated that we can't go to Austria. Many Italians were very disciplined to help reduce the spread.
vlej
Well perhaps this might finally allow those madmen you guys have who want to join Austria to think it through a little more.
titaniumsnail
Sweden is facing the same problem now as the rest of Scandinavia/Nordics are giving them the cold shoulder.
inscrutablehorse
I remember seeing those interviews on TV. "But it's not so bad in Skåne, so why can't they go to Denmark?" - Like, did anyone think it thru?

Wait.. we havent been doing that for years anyway?

Italy. Greetings from Germany.

Italians who went skiing had a much higher chance of being infected than Chinese restaurant owners in Italy. Limiting access based on 1/2
PangolinBan
2/2 nationality is not a very effective measure though. I get wanting to open up tourism, but this country by country thing won't do much.
vlej
admittedly, there never was an actual ban on going to chinese restaurants specifically.
PangolinBan
That'd have been pretty dubious legally, since I imagine a lot of them are owned by Italians. Of Chinese descent maybe, but still Italians.
vlej
Not really, no. In italy, the chinese community is massive and owns plenty of businesses, including some italian-run ones. This said, it
vlej
wouldn't have made a ban any more sensible.
PangolinBan
I thought a 2nd generation would automatically get Italian citizenship, but after looking it up that's apparently not the case. Needs an 1/2

Italians a racist because the church taught them they are the superior race and any other race is evil. This was a tactic for colonization.
vlej
Italy overall isn't particularly racist. It has its prejudices and some people certainly are, though in italy you're much more likely to
vlej
find xenofobia stemming from political, religious, or even just… us vs. them mentality than you are to find people who actually believetoday
vlej
in racial "superiority". It's not that a foreigner is inferior, it's just that "they come here to steal, rape, take our jobs", etc. and race
vlej
is mostly incidental to that (after all, the same exact mentality was very strong up until recently, and still is to an extent between the

northern and southern populations of italy.

As an American, I can empathize, and it’s also good to know that not all the idiots live here. Stay strong, and stay safe! <3
OddOod
Yeah, Turns out every country is just as full of shitbags as the US. Humans be humans
TheGhostofKennyRogers
The US is considerably less racist than most of the world. Despite what the news and this echo chamber will tell you.
blainetog
Yes. Racism is a human problem, not just an American problem. But it's important not to let that lead to complacency. We have huge problems>
blainetog
> with injustice and racism that need to be solved, even if other countries do too.
OddOod
The thing is just that we're dealing with the racism rn while everyone else is just letting it slide.
rando84
Yes & no, race relations are more central to US society—a more homogeneous country without the legacy of slavery/a disadvantaged minority (1

group may have more backward views, but it’s less intense/consequential. US politics has turned on race Issues for its entire history— (2

yesiamaphysicist
Ah, I'm sorry, I didn't realize racism is defined by whether or not someone wants a neighbour of a different race...
TheGhostofKennyRogers
I didn’t realize it was defined by how bad you feel the problem is.
trdfrgsn
I mostly agree with @TheGhostofKennyRogers. We can avoid the groups like kkk; I’ve been outside US where racism is open and accepted. Normal
yesiamaphysicist
Are you white? And if so, do you think your experience with racism may be different than those that are actually targets of it?
kmikl
Have you ever visited China? If you want to work, one of the easier jobs to get is as a "white monkey" for business promotions. Seriously.
Guyhood
The thing with America is people are vocal. In many other places racism exists in a dormant form, usually under the guise of patriotism etc.
trdfrgsn
I'm not. In some places, they just hate you because you're foreign. Add race and not knowing the language and it can get rough.
theatand
Globally white people are just as capable to be targeted as anybody else, depends on the country & culture. Systematic vs individual varies
