They can be unimpressive in retrospect, but their influence can't be escaped in popular music.
A lot of what's better about today's music is built on what they and a few other vinyl era artists were first to explore.

Yeah I learned the hard way. Late 90’s early 2000’s was a great time and I actually made a lot of good friends from dedicated forums (Star Wars, etc.). There were some irate/obsessive people but mostly fans were just chill and happy to socialize with other fans. Once social media hit the scene it all went downhill fast and I quickly bailed. I still love what I love but try not to interact with anyone outside of my personal circle these days.

Sometimes fans can literally ruin it. Generally with shows that are focused on irony or satire. You get a large vocal group of fans that doesn't get it, and a company that wants to make money, and gradually the show stops being ironic and just becomes what it was trying to satirize

Lots of fanbases have lots of opinions and they'd like to believe that their input can have an active effect on the product. In wrestling, the fans are often literally part of the product, as their responses to live events can drive or alter narratives. Because of this, they are SO FUCKING SMUG and demand instant gratification and feel like their plans are better than the thoughtfully crafted plans of the people putting on the shows.
