Did you give them a constant source of fresh air? Most people assume their home's AC/heating system will be enough, and they're very wrong. Try having a small oscillating fan on them, not only do plants need more air blown on them than you think, but the physical action of the air blowing them around acts as a type of exercise for the plants, helping them regrow stronger the same way exercise helps humans.

I've tried the skewer method to keep track of watering but no luck. Put them by the window, bought a fancy light, watch the temperature, make sure they're in an area with good airflow.
