Hi! This is my first ever Submission!
I love d&d and have been playing for about 5 years
I am the DM for my group and always have been
Self taught but I have learned how to "rules lawyer" with the best of them thanks to my players
Almost all of my players are engineering students or graduates and they LOVE to power game
Which makes for really interesting encounters when it's time for combat.
I've managed to keep them from being murderhobos thankfully.
Mostly because I've given them their own kingdom thanks to a Deck of Many things I VERY foolishly gave to my players early on. Thankfully it sorted itself out by killing the greedy players.
But, every now and then I do something to remind them that yes there are consequences to their actions. Like above.
My world is pretty sandboxy, I let the players go where they want and do what they want and just give an overall goal that needs to be accomplished at some point.
I've learned to improvise pretty much everything on the spot these days, I rarely get prep time unless i set a specific event on the calendar.
It really does help that we play nearly every Sunday.
Oh, did I mention there are on average 9 of us? Crazy, I started with just 4 players.
I'm really just trying to keep ads off here so I'll tell a few amusing d&d stories to pass the time
My players decided the best way to destroy an secret enemy base in a city was to destroy it. It leveled ten city blocks. Thousands died. It was a realm tragedy.
My Dwarf Barbarian has, through sheer murder, death, and intimidation /strength checks, managed to become the Emperor of the Dwarven civilization.
My Druid has managed to bring about an apocalyptic event on the world that my entire group is currently fighting against.
My Paladin started off as Neutral, then went full Evil, then did an arc of Redemption and now is doing the Redeemed Leader. So... the opposite of Arthas I suppose.
No ads
One of my favorite nat 1s was a player shooting off another's testicle because they were shooting through their legs.
I have only had 1 TPK (yea I know I'm not mean enough) and that was pure accident when I was first learning to DM.
My Rogue Assassin has two legendary blades that she so aptly named... Meat & Potatoes. To this day it remains a crowning achievement.
I haven't had a gnome character yet, which is kind of disappointing.
But boy do I have Dwarves. A Dwarven Emperor and the Dwarven Engineer
My group once spent an hour investigating an empty room with no traps, no gimica, nothing. Simply because they didnt trust me. Well... I deserve it.
Having 9 players at levels 9 through 11 means a LOT dice and monsters.
Combats take FOREVER.
Our Druid, see above, was possessed and my group came VERY close to executing him. Thankfully they managed to find his soul and restore him.
My group definitely has done this
And this
Thanks for reading! I also write a blog of my adventures (although it's about 2 years out of date, if people are interested I'll throw the link up)
But.. not this
My Wizard after having a minor mental break decided to enchant his hand with every magical object he could find to create the ultimate in magical hands.
But in the end, I love my players and my group
Even if they drive me crazy
And give me headaches
And message me at all hours of the day and night
And have a never ending stream of questions and comments and rules
Despite all that though, D&F has become a favorite pastime of our group and has really started to spread through the local campus thanks to many of my group
I love to let my players create their own enemies
I haven't had a true charisma based character
Yup. Been there. Done that. Left a crater.
True. Oh so true.
I swear that is when their die betray them.
Yup. Couple of these
I've let a few Homebrews in, but after HEAVY negotiations and rules.
I thought 4 was bad. 9... is so much worse.
Dog tax, although this was supposed to be lower.
aPokal
I only play if there is an orphanage, i can donate that trinket with an ominous aura to.

#9 the answer is: Teleport without error
viridianasovari
My DM gave out party a bag and made the mistake if saying it had "all necessary equipment" in it. We used it against him pulling out a bunch
viridianasovari
/2 of things we need to make our lives easier. He didn't like that and later kidnapped us and took it away

Does post-apocalyptic dnd exist ?
Floridamanmakeslightsaber
DM was not happy I could use summon item on a horse, after confirming summon item functions vertically; I dropped a horse on the hoss.
karlbadmanners
I'm all for CE/CG/LE Paladin's but a Neutral one? No way

Just watched s01e68 yesterday. I'm so glad I didn't have to wait a week. But daaamn, that was tough to watch.
AnOceanOfStars
#1 Well, I loved to power up my PCs exactly to make them face greater threats. And supposedly, that's why they loved it too.
AnOceanOfStars
Otherwise, they'd be playing "teacup with dolls".
AstroExplained
Current campaign: had to rob the city guard. Went under cover as dwarf smith making armor. Left with lucrative contract to gear the guard.
ID1746
Technically, you fulfilled the objective, just on a larger scale. It's a government contract: overcharge it.
LegionHeart42
This is master level theft. It’s the only acceptable plan.
LupusLilium
'Hmm, yeah. Iron. That's pretty rare and hard to get these days, I'm afraid it won't be cheap. Not to mention the transport costs.'
Stefanfr1997
About the Lich thing: IIRC the rituals to become one involves a lot of dark magic and murdering of innocents, so... Yeah...
Bishopcorva
Been running the same character since AD&D, a very world weary tinker lugging around way too much junk.
switchoffswitchon
I’m a gnome ranger!
Jimwthe3rd
Spongebob is clearly about to tpk some bitches.
MinMinForTheWin
Doing my first ever game tomorrow with a very homebrew friendly GM that is helping me bring my lawful evil cleric idea to life.
Balfrog
One campaign I ended up in a strip club in Jupiter, rolled dexterity to dance, rolled a 1, lost a limb. Rolled to pick it up, lost another.
justanotheruserhidingout
As a GM I have a house rule where when a paladin falls they channel the full strength of there oath/deity/order and all ability scores /1
justanotheruserhidingout
Get +10 and everything just gets buffed but then they take a lot of damage (number of hitdice one die step down) so if they have 10d10 /1
justanotheruserhidingout
Hit die for example they would take 10d8 but then they get a nerfed fighter page back until they atone or go anti paladin /3
justanotheruserhidingout
Monks can do the same but they get peasant sheets instead/4
FayS0ff
On the subject of creating our own enemies, my mesmerist rolled a nat 1 on an intimidate check against a guild proprietor. Said proprietor 1
FayS0ff
is now out to destroy the party and everything they've ever known and loved. I'm not sorry. 2/2
TakeDown12
I really want to try and get into D&D with my girlfriend but we don't have anyone to play with, which is a shame.
terribleinternetpunsfirstborn
I have that problem. My gf is actually great and we do have interested friends but they're more self-conscious and after our last small 1/
terribleinternetpunsfirstborn
group she's really not interested in being the only player actually being involved 2/2
ArchonErikr
Ironic. I have plenty of people to play with (and have recently started DMing myself) and know a Discord server, but don't have a girlfriend
parasztarcal
Being english speaking is a huge advantage, there are countless LFGs on ro">.net">roll20.net and rpol.net both. And some other forums I already forgot
LickyLoo
As a previous poster stated, you can play it online fairly easily now. My husband and I have used roll20.net to play online with friends.
LickyLoo
I would
LickyLoo
Also check out comic shops, book stores and even your local library! Good luck to you!
wontgoquietly
I always wanted to play d&d but now in my 30s i have no idea how to start and anxiety which stops me trying
BypassXI
Had my first tpk last week, party kicked down the door sorcerer won intiative aand had a wild magic surge and accidentally fireballed them.
TharrickLawson
I had one like that, where the cleric hadn't read spell descriptions and cast flame strike in an enclosed area
TharrickLawson
He thought it was a single-target spell, and the whole party evaporated
moonshadowkati
How? It's only 28 damage on average, and you need to be at least level 9 to cast it. Even a 10 Con Wizard should have twice that at 9.
TharrickLawson
Already weakened party, middle of a frantic combat, and excellent damage rolls mixed with failed reflex all around
TharrickLawson
He thought he was going to finish off the monster, then do all the healing and be the Big Damn Hero. Whoops...
BypassXI
Both amazing and depressing as it was only 30 mins into the session
ImInLoveWithAtLeastThreeGirls
I hate spoofing rolls, but that's when you spoof a roll.
BypassXI
He rolled it in front of everyone we just decided to split the universe and just play it as it they weren'tdead until the end of the session

Generally liches have to be evil because undead are innately evil due to plot, but I like chill skelebro with a cat better
deactivated19l19l17
From what I understand the process of becoming a lich requires 'a feat of great evil' which kinda gatekeeps who can achieve it
GaySocialistLiberalMuslimCommieAtheist
Arch lich are the good variety of lich
parasztarcal
5e removed a lot - if not all - alignment restrictions, so I think it's in the spirit of the game now to just do whatever is fun.
Flodos
I love D&D, but can't get into GM'ing. I can make a story, I just don't know how to craft encounters. Any tips?
ZombieSteve
There are tables and phone apps for the random encounters if that's what you're struggling with.
parasztarcal
Kobold Fight Club and Goblinist has encounter generators with some options to make them more cohesive. Shouldn't take any effort.
jhackofalltrades
. for DnD (thanks man)
Andrewleedragon
I'm not op but wolves are a great tester battle. They are perfect for any level. Also if a battle seems too easy or too hard you change it
KEDAAAH
You're right but I'm laughing at the idea of making an encounter for an epic level party and deciding "hmm... 1500 wolves should do it."
Andrewleedragon
Nah just give them some stealth a pack of say 10, in the woods at night, don't forget flanking and prone rules and you can PK real easy.
BoozeHound001
Hold up, wolves can fuck a party hard. Pack tactics and forcing people prone is a nasty combo
Andrewleedragon
Yeah they can and they never and I mean NEVER expect it
