My brother had a purebred bulldog that was skinny and muscular, never had problems until she was thirteen. Now, it's totally anecdotal, but it still does make me suspect these health problems are IN PART because most people are too lazy to walk their dog three times a week, then get surprised when it has health problems. The breeds do have increased risk of these things, but I wonder how prevalent it would be if people weren't so lazy and let their dogs get overweight and atrophy.
