Mafias form when the government fails to provide a service. Whether it's drugs or security or murders. That said, corrupt governments learned long ago they can just hire the mob when they need em. Look at Saddam Hussein or putin. Mafia and govt are just two sides of the same coin in a lot of cases.

Hacking is pretty much calling people or working temporarily as a cleaner. In movies, it's tapdancing on a keyboard with topless women prancing around and then you scream "I'm in" and something dumb in a silly accent.

Another point, is that people realized the mafia was always a lot more horrible than what they were portrayed. Soprano's made it so people expect the mob to be complete bastards. You stop having any sympathy at all for them, so they make terrible lead roles in movies.

Scorsese DeNiro Project 17b did well, but it was kinda terrible. They had DeNiro try to beat a shopkeeper’s ass and they would’ve been better off using the Black Panther VFX team than having him shuffle menacingly at a guy

I dunno, I think there's some pretty cool stories out there about the intersection of lobbying, thinktanks, politicians, and staffers. But, Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and would much rather regurgitate a comic book story from 30-50 years ago because it's a lot more international story than an American mafia/politics story.

To be fair, the "Mafia aesthetic" was completely fabricated to make a movie more visually interesting because these kinds of parasites have always been dripless losers, government takeover or no.

I remember reading an interview with some former mobster talking about how before The Godfather came out, mobsters would just motherfuck each other left and right because who cares, then they all saw the movie and started emulating it because...having a code of honor sounded cool, I guess.

There was much more nuance than that, During the era of The Commission there was lots of organization and nobody got whacked without permission. The Commission was basically a Mafia UN where the various US crime families kept things organized. Because they were so busy gang warring before that it impacted profits. RICO Act however is what really drove a killing blow to what id call the era of the mob that hollywood idealized. RICO let the feds follow the money and go after the Dons.

Goodfellas probably did a better job showing their violence than The Godfather did. Today of course we have documentaries that show the realities of organized crime and that is honestly more interesting than fictional movies. Goodfellas was better than most because it was based on a true story. I read the book. Pretty interesting read even if Hill was full of shit most of the time.
His cookbook though, that thing is rock solid
