In December 2016 a Tesla Owner complained that people use the Supercharger spots as parking space – even if their car is long loaded. He did so in a direct tweet to Elon Musk.
And he did not just make a promise. He took action. After an incredible 6 days, the answer was there.
Elon Musk and his team had come up with a solution that charges 0.40 cents per minute if you park at a Supercharger spot after your car is fully charged. It took them 6 days to make this solution!
This shows something else: Even though Tesla by now is a huge company wth over 30k employees, they still act agile as a startup. That is a huge feat.
ThePakistallion
Easily one of the best CEOs in the world right now. This guy is always on the ball.
Mydogismybestman
0.40 cents or 40 cents? 0.4 cents is not 40 cents.
CaptainFartacus
Fuckin love Ellon musk
usernamepolice
.40 cents. lol u mean 40 cents or .40 dollars. Sorry i had to
TheManTheMythTheLurker
Or someone was tweeting that at him every day and after 6 months of working on it he replied to a random tweet saying it would happen.
Caabale
Thank you ! Because the solution arrived 6 days after this report does not mean the problem was not known for a longer time.

Y’all commenting on Tesla’s shit but nobody cares that OP is the Reddit legend whose dad beats him on a regular basis? /u/rogersimon10
JhericFury
I mean, this solution meant he could charge consumers money. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just not enough to override my distrust of ceos
dazedNconfuzed
Around Atlanta, EV chargers are typically $1/hr for 4 hours ... then $20/hr after.
iamben
that's pretty cheap parking in the UK
edward8767
In London perhaps. 3 quid an hour in Newcastle
edward8767
The 1 dollar an hour is most likely on top of any actual parking fee. The 1 dollar is for the machine use

Good way to implement sommething without people complaining, just act like it's a service to customers, good one Musk, must write that down.
CandidGamera
Exactly! Let's hope Musk never gets bought by the anti-net neutrality lobby. They've been pushing "net neutrality=bad for customers" forever
davepermen
as an EV driver (not tesla yet), it's a great solution. idle-time at chargers is a thing we have to battle early.
PianoMan2112
Do your get a notification when it's charged, or almost charged, so you get back in time?
serenityfast
Yes, the car notifies you via the app, and IIRC there's like a 15 minute leeway after.
forreallyandfortrue
Yes, Tesla owners have an app for that.
merelyadequategooglymoogly
The per-minute rate should start at $.01 and grow exponentially.

GeorgeBushHatesBlackPuppets
What's the relationship that should exist between tax payers and private companies? Because my tax dollars pay 1/8 of every car.

Stereotypical CEO behavior. Convince them and it gets done fast. Problem occurs when the CEO gets convinced of stupid shit; thus management.
Blahblahhh
I dunno why you're downvoted. I left my old job bc my CEO had ideas that consistently couldn't be implemented or were flat out bad.
thatpissedginger
Except this isint a bad idea. It's an incentive to get tesla owners to move their cars so others can charge. Instead of hogging the charger.
Grudgebearingmidget
How is this part of a stereotype? This is akin to people leaving their cars in front of a gas-station pump, you wouldn't be mad about that?
SolictedDickPicsUponRequest
I replied to the comment that all companies should have a relationship with their customers that would allow them to act in just 6 days.
SolictedDickPicsUponRequest
Not everyone's 140 character comment can overcome someone else's lack of reading comprehension. That is why you should consider context :)
AShadyZebra
Somebody complains so he makes people pay him more money and kinda-sorta solves the problem?
jhonnydickshot
They start charging money to you when your car is already full
AShadyZebra
Just because it solves the problem doesn't mean his motives are benign. He is profiting from it, so his diligence might be in self-interest.
Gmayor61
Dear god, a company trying to make money off of a service?!
Jusmar
Yeah, imagine if Verizon did that. The whole internet would go mad. Wait... They did.
Storm5
Shocker the owner of a business wants to both find and implement ways to keep his customers happy and make him money
muddydude
What's wrong with that? Business is business, and if you can fix a problem and please the customer while also making a profit, why not?
Jusmar
He's not pleasing his customers, he's pleasing a random dude on twitter. His customers are the ones getting fucked
MayorofLoserville
If he wanted profit, he would charge people for the superchargers but they dont. That says alot and so shut and take you shit elsewhere.
ohjohnboy
Makes them pay for being assholes. Not much else you can do I guess. Did they install CC readers on all the machines though? How do they get
backwardnipple
At least in Norway, you get charged the accumulated idle fees at your next service visit.
CindyWho4
You would get a ticket for blocking any other service from people when not in use - gas pump, drive thru, etc. You use it or move...
CindyWho4
I don't see a problem with the company handling it instead of police.

Its .4 cents. Or .004 dollars
RaynebowDeathtrap
yewt
NissacEwton
Yes so should be 40 cents or $0.40
ThijmenDF
He mistyped it, he should've said $0.40 and not 0.40 cents. That's like saying $0.004 (aka 2/5 of a single cent).
BigBearLover
1 $ = 100 Cents. 0.4$ = 40 cents. Because 0.99 $ = 99 cents. Am I not getting how your money works?
TheBeardedDragon
Yes, $0.4 = 40 cents. But OP said 0.4 cents
BigBearLover
Oooh ok. Thank you for explaining it to me.

How many cents are 0.40 dollars?
BigBearLover
40 ?

Hahahaha whoosh. Dude were talkin about parts of a penny. So there are 2500 .40 cents in a dollar. .40 cents is $0.0040. Get it now?
BigBearLover
Tbh. I've never seen or use neither pennies or cents.
EXiSTENCEthreshold
Try x100. Or idk, it's the imperial system, might be like 67 cents in a dollar.
Snaitf
0.40 cents X 2.5 = 1 cent, not 1 dollar
twozerooz
Yikes math wasnt your best subject huh

0.4 cents is 0.004$ though. OP said fee was 0.4 cents which is wrong. Do you work for Verizon?
BigBearLover
If I worked for any phone company then it would be Comviq or Telia.
TheUglyGuy
Tesla is also still not making any money - but that's sort of beside the point.
Stratego89
Tesla isn't making money because that money is going towards growth in not only that company, but many others. Making money doesn't actually
Stratego89
happen for most well-laid-out companies because they focus on the future instead of the now.

They're also completely disrupting one of the largest industries on the planet, in a eco-friendly way, and doing it without advertising.

Define "making money"? He is selling cars, solar panels, batteries, etc. So he's making money, he's just reinvesting more of it?

It's all about market capitalization and growth these days. Amazon is on course to become the world's first trillion dollar cap, for example

It's only "super common" for startups to be unprofitable. Look at the S&P 500 and you'll see dividend paying profitable businesses.

Isn't there a weird fact about like that with Amazon. But with Amazon it's due to constant acquisitions and expansion

That used to be the case for a long time buy now Amazon makes money straight up.

This is also how the film industry works. Films very rarely report a profit, keeps IRS off backs and have full scale control of finances.

Yep.

I believe (could be wrong) but that's the tax loophole they use. If it's reinvested before it's declared profit, they don't pay tax on it
ZMLZ
As I say though, willing to be wrong
AncientSeraph
That's not a tax loophole, that's the definition of profits. If you reinvest it, it's not profits, 'cause you're spending it.
greenteawithrosepetals
Sorry, just a bit confused. Let me know if I missed something/misunderstood
imgurdemocratcirclejerk
I think the confusion is in the technical details. They are making tons of money, but just reinvesting it.
TheInfamousPenguin
No you're right, A company either grows by reinvestment or it gives its earnings to its shareholders. It's a way to make money on stocks
rugmiem
$24.00 per hour if you leave ur car idle (after is full charged)

The Tesla app alerts owners when their charge is nearly complete. Charge only counts of bay >50% occupied. Seems fair.

vanel
Agreed, maybe they could double the per minute rate every hour. 40¢ first hour, 80¢ next hour, etc. That third hour would start to hurt.
RackhamTheRed
make it exponential. after a few hours you get the car back from the former owner for free
RobotMassacre538
Well I wouldn't want to be charging up my car and not pay attention to find I have to hand over a couple of dollars over a few minutes
t0pz
Exactly. I think this is a nifty move to add profit margins and "solve" the problem short-term but in the longrun ppl will hate it probably
patthefox
Could do something like have a latency period. 5 minutes before it kicks in, and then kicks in with a surcharge worth 5 minutes.
TK421isAFK
Even 30 minutes is reasonable. This is addressing people that park there all day/night.
notaballoon
It's about 10$ more than hourly street parking in Times Square
fedoraeuphoria
That's a bargain in the Bay Area
TK421isAFK
No, it's not. That's about the most expensive parking you'll find, even in downtown SF during a Giants game or work hours on Montgomery.
Sienfeldreference
$576 a day for parking is a bargain? I'd never leave the house..
fedoraeuphoria
I was being sarcastic but in SF some public parking places would charge $50 or so a day.
BojackTheHorsemanDontActLikeYouDontKnow

For folks in San Mateo, it's a pittance.

from it. I like Elon as much as the next guy but doesnt mean he uses trickery like everyone else.
Ozarck
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. You are right that he was aware of the problem before the tweet, but maybe he just wanted a solution
Corrodias
You're saying they thought it was a problem despite no complaints, sat on a solution until someone complained, then implemented it for PR?
Corrodias
It's kind of a funny perspective, from a developer's point of view. That's just how defect prioritization works. Don't fix if no one cares.
skincancerisfun
$Yes. What's more likely, Elon has so little on his plate that he can respond to things as little in importance as this in less than a week
skincancerisfun
$$ or people repeatedly tweet this, and they made a profit making move seem like exceptional customer care
MediocreExtremist
Don't these cars have automatic parking? Make the car start and autonomously drive to a parking spot. text/mail new location to owner.
Gaidenninjacat
Its already easy enough to hack new vehicles, don't make it easier.

It's a goal of Tesla but it is not self driving yet
HuginOchMunin
Teslas AI has got an autonomous driving level 2 which allows for it to do guided tasks, driving on its own like that is not possible yet.

Can't they can auto-park themselves? Maybe I'm wrong about that. But it should be enough to back out of the charger and find an empty space.

They can, they've been perfectly capable for a long time... Bit more serious legally speaking with a tonne of vehicle moving through 1/2
ICantThinkOfAU
heavy traffic with people and no driver to take control in event of an error though 2/2
MediocreExtremist
No need for traffic: i mean last meters in a parking place to connect with the current without the need for the driver to do it manually. >
Kkenn
Not sure why no one corrects u, it's 24cents instead of dollar. 0.4 cents X 60mins
ArchangelArtist
Math isn't your forté? $.40 a minute times 60? That is so $24!
happyishturtle
But it isn't .4 cents it's $0.40 so $0.40 × 60 min= $24.00 per hour
Jufasa
The picture clearly says "$0.40/minute" not .4 cents a minute, OP mistyped
Kkenn
MY BAD GUYS. NEWS WROTE $0.40 BUT DESCRIPTION WROTE 0.40 CENTS. 24 BUCKS PER HR? MADNESS
saberwolf617
If you can afford a tesla you can afford expensive parking
tsuhg
You don't get rich by paying 24$ an hour when there are cheaper alternatives
Kopar
True but I've met some pretty rich and very rich people and you'd be surprised how many are cheap as fuck
TK421isAFK
Most of them, I've found. That's how they got and stay rich. That, and they are usually old enough to have bought real estate before 1990.
Cheomesh
My coworker has one only because his father left it to him in his will.
imguyy
Not necessarily true.
Corrodias
Generally true, but 1) it still works as an incentive to move the vehicle (it must, or they'd increase it), and 2) people who are good with»
Corrodias
money don't waste it needlessly, as that's part of the definition of being good with money. Those who inherited might park here, though.
CapTon
That's cheap parking in Melbourne Australia and Auckland nz. Dollar is different though
ggp06
Also, in a lot of places there are massive tax cuts or no tax at all on teslas making them about the same price as a BMW
RobotMassacre538
Then it's a win-win for Tesla, less people use those charging ports as parking spots and the ones that don't give Tesla money, great idea
HydroSean
They're coming out with the model 3 which is $35k
pancreas
I don't know much about Tesla's, and I'm interested, but I imagine they don't handle cold weather very well, eh?
TK421isAFK
Why would you assume that? Lithium batteries are not like lead-acid liquid electrolyte batteries.
pancreas
hence the preface in my comment. My assumption is that it would have a more difficult time running/warming the cab compared to combustion.
Redlab
I live in Norway, one of the most sold cars here are Teslas :) They handle cold weather really well.
DrunkSnowWhite
That's significantly more affordable, esp if that's the price for one new
presidentjoebiden
It is, granted it doesnt come with every feature, it's a great entry level car that'll make electric more accessible(and cool)
feeltheice
The only thing that's kept me from buying one is the range. I wanna drive more than 300miles a day.
feeltheice
They aren't even that expensive. $80k isn't absurd when you figure in savings on gas.
Cheomesh
It would take me years and years to break even on that.
zipykido
You could buy a 15k car with 20 mpg, and go half a million miles at $2.5/gal gas before the cost was equal to a tesla.
daggypants
But then you would have a sucky car with 500,000 miles..
GoingMonkeMode
That would've gotten you from point A to point B 500,000 miles worth of time. That much money and you haven't even driven the Tesla yet.
feeltheice
Ok, fine but a $30k tesla then.
thejefe24
FutureRetroism
Right but a Tesla is not trying to be comparable to a 15K car it's appointed more like a luxury car that would cost 50-60k easily.
Cheomesh
Which is its problem.
pajamallamadrama
$184k for the one I want. That is absurd :(

I'm bad at math and my calculator is like 4 clicks away and I'm lazy so I trust your math. Thanks
Mumalot
As a man with a calculator readily on my computerdesk, his math is good.
Occationalrickroll
Hi. Two years after your comment, we all now have calculators on our phones AND laptops. I dont understand how you guys survived without it
EverydayIsLegDayBecauseImRunningFromMyProblems
Woosh! You have a smol pener. (Sorry I woke up today and that was stuck in my head. I saw the meme 3 days ago)

I just took it off the cable:

Math is rad!
Mumalot
That looks photoshopped... YOU CANT FOOL ME!. (jking, it rly is $24/hr :) )
armeggedonCounselor
Mildly unrelated, but dude. I got a keyboard with a macro that launches the calculator built right in. It's great.
IsItWorthReading
Neeeeeerrrrdd
haveanothergif
Except for when your web browser has a calculator built into the search bar.
armeggedonCounselor
That requires me to move my mouse all the way to the top, open a new tab, and then figure out how I need to type the question to get the
armeggedonCounselor
right answer. Whereas calculator button is one button, and then a proper calculator interface. And I don't need to move my hand that much,
