Tensegrity, the word you are looking for is tensegrity.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's simply hanging by a thread.

Make it smaller and prettier, and I'd probably buy one

As an engineer of science - I love it!

That one's easy, at least as long as the table is lighter than the buckets which isn't hard to achieve.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean the one actually easier to understand at first glance

Ain't no magnets at play here, buddy. Move along now and let the adults work.

This time it’s knot magnets

Use clear string for the short middle one

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like your thinking but why not all?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It makes it seem like it’s held up by just loose string vertically and not hanging at a glance

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Okay, here's how I made sense of it. Imagine the longer strings aren't there. The top structure is pushing down on the middle string -

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

- and because of its design, in order to fall down, it has to rotate, twist. This means that the loop at the top has to have at least -

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

- one part of it raising upward to allow it as a whole to fall. So, the longer strings are in tension, preventing it from twisting, and -

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

- so preventing it from falling.

Fucking magnets, how do they work?

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 8

That's not magnets though.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 6

It definitely is. That "Snap" half way through the video is definitely not gravity.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 16

I agree with you. When the triangle sort of shape hits the table, the motion is kinda odd. It slides first

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Its gravity and strings.. holy shit

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

I thought so at first too. That snap is when tension is achieved on all the strings and it snaps into place. No magnets.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There's no "snap" Like. It's pretty simple. The top part wants to go down. But there's a string tying it's bottom to the grounded part. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

so, it can't go further down. The outside strings are keeping it stable. Since all four strings are taut, it stays. That is why the 1½/2

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

person keeps the middle string taut when moving it. Simple physics. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty straightforward. The short string is supporting it, the long ones are stabilizing.

6 years ago | Likes 1343 Dislikes 16

The elasticity of the center is pushing it up

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

I think this makes no difference, that just gives it a bigger threshold and range for this to work. Works the same with a tight string.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like that’s cool but still

Pretty straightforward... fucking magic

6 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 2

Tensegrity and tensile structures are so damn cool. Imagine if/when we develop lighter than air architectural materials...

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Olympia park (Munich), just about any shigeru ban project, a few Santiago Calatrava projects if you’re looking 4 similar Architectural ideas

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think there's a little illusion too. The top piece is probably leaving farther forward than it looks.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

That is, if you saw it from the side, I bet it would be much less interesting.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

No, It only works if the three outer strings pull in different directions, countering each other. So the triangle has to be near centered.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wanna make one now.

I want one as a desk.

Could easily make a small one from a couple paper clips and a bit of floss.

Here I’m thinking bigger, pvc pipe, trailer trash lawn sculpture bigger. I know what I’m doing tomorrow.
