Use clear string for the short middle one
DocWino
I like your thinking but why not all?
It makes it seem like it’s held up by just loose string vertically and not hanging at a glance

Okay, here's how I made sense of it. Imagine the longer strings aren't there. The top structure is pushing down on the middle string -
- and because of its design, in order to fall down, it has to rotate, twist. This means that the loop at the top has to have at least -
- one part of it raising upward to allow it as a whole to fall. So, the longer strings are in tension, preventing it from twisting, and -
- so preventing it from falling.

Fucking magnets, how do they work?

That's not magnets though.

It definitely is. That "Snap" half way through the video is definitely not gravity.
slightlyofftopiccommenter
I agree with you. When the triangle sort of shape hits the table, the motion is kinda odd. It slides first
Its gravity and strings.. holy shit
I thought so at first too. That snap is when tension is achieved on all the strings and it snaps into place. No magnets.
GodEmperorOfImgur
There's no "snap" Like. It's pretty simple. The top part wants to go down. But there's a string tying it's bottom to the grounded part. 1/2
so, it can't go further down. The outside strings are keeping it stable. Since all four strings are taut, it stays. That is why the 1½/2
person keeps the middle string taut when moving it. Simple physics. 2/2
NiSiSuinegEht
Pretty straightforward. The short string is supporting it, the long ones are stabilizing.
MisterApollo
The elasticity of the center is pushing it up
27yoUGLYvirgin
I think this makes no difference, that just gives it a bigger threshold and range for this to work. Works the same with a tight string.

Like that’s cool but still

I think there's a little illusion too. The top piece is probably leaving farther forward than it looks.
That is, if you saw it from the side, I bet it would be much less interesting.
maxwilder
No, It only works if the three outer strings pull in different directions, countering each other. So the triangle has to be near centered.

I want one as a desk.
Could easily make a small one from a couple paper clips and a bit of floss.
Here I’m thinking bigger, pvc pipe, trailer trash lawn sculpture bigger. I know what I’m doing tomorrow.
I'm wondering if I have the skills to make one out of coat hangers. For bonus points, plastic coat hangers.
