So apparently China are now demanding a public apology for a drawing in the Danish newspaper Jyllandsposten (same paper that printed the infamous Muhammad pictures some years ago). Really?! Let's make this flag go as viral as Winnie the Pooh.
Danish sauce: https://nyheder.tv2.dk/samfund/2020-01-28-kina-forlanger-offentlig-undskyldning-for-tegning-i-jyllands-posten

The Danish gov arent responsible for that their people say. But the chinese gov is responsible for how healthy their people are.

Haha thank you Jyllands Posten. I’m very proud of my adoptive country sometimes. Now let’s hope they don’t fold and apologise

6 years ago | Likes 253 Dislikes 5

Well you live in a country that can take a punch. Denmark couldnt defend for more than 4 hours, last it was attack. All talk, no action

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Chief editor made a public statement that that's not gonna happen. They didn't fold on the Muhammed drawings, and they won't on this either.

6 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 1

Good for them. JP isn’t my favourite paper but respect where respect is due

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

China, as a Dane, let me express this from the bottom of my heart.

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

'Lets make this flag go viral' says OP.

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 3

China is asshoe, but people are dying and I don't buy the awareness bullshit. This is just a bad taste joke.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The article states the newspaper was trying to showcase the virus being battled in china. china took offence since its making them look bad

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Eeeh, it's possible I missed something but I don't see anything re. "newpaper trying to showcase" mentioned, only talk about the picture.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the danish showing them trying to combat the disease made them look bad...so the chinese decided to make themselves look worse?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Nobody said China's government was smart

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

well the chinese govt did, but only north korea backed that up. everyone else politely disagreed

Okay, here is the deal.. i quit tomorrow- but today, i get to try this exotic, new meat coming out of wuhan, limited time only.. deal?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

unconfirmed, virus most likely passed on via air droplets at wet market. if china controlled selling of exotic animals, would we be in shit?

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Stomping around in animal fluids and not cleaning anything properly is the problem. Same thing caused SARS. China don't care.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A clever and witty political statement in a simplistic design. I love it.

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

What is the political statement here though? That there's a virus outbreak in China? Maybe I'm missing something.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's an important nuance going forward! There was no outright statement, it was just "an observation on current events", as is tradition.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that is appropriate, how? A similar observation on current events would have similar cartoon, just with an Australian flag with ->

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

-> burning koalas. But, lol, right? Funny as hell, rolf-lol!!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I doubt anyone who sees this will form a new opinion. It's not exactly the first time they did this, and it's not exactly the worst they do>

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I thought that was the case with one of the previous outbreaks, but now China has been pretty forthcoming in comparison?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's pretty much what actually happened though.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The Danish are masters of political art

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Political? There's nothing political about this in any way or form. It's a 'neener-neener, you're dying to a virus :P'.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And we value freedom of speech as high as many value religion.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

this? art? it doesnt even say anything, just 'China has virus lol' the fact it impresses many shows how we're descending into an idiocracy

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Are you aware of Rauschenberg’s white paintings? This is art without question, but whether it’s good or bad, that’s a matter of opinion. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 8

The picture is not funny because it didn't meant to be, but people here think it might be funny to make this viral, and that is wrong.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not a funny picture, it's a commentary on current events. <= Paraphrase of what the paper said.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Comment on current events my ass, this is the same paper that made the Muhammad caricatures. You think the world and indeed imgur would ->

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

->LOL their asses off if that paper published a picture of the Hinomaru going down in a flood of water during the 2011 tsunami?! They ->

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

-> would've been lynched, and for good reason but somehow it's open season on China. What's next, burning koalas on an Aussie flag? LOL,right!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's what the paper said in response. Either way the Chinese troll army has been out in full force..

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The amount of people who don't get that they're not making fun (it's political commentary) is astounding.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Not as astoundingly stupid as yourself thinking it's a political post when the editor of the paper has categorically denied that it is.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Too bad it doesn't have any of the in depth explanation that the Danish source does.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

In Denmark, the government is not responsible for what people say or their artistic expression, because you know, freedom of speech

6 years ago | Likes 2079 Dislikes 13

I think we have something similar in US. ERRRR maybe not.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Karen is just asking for a manager

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which is great. But way too many assholes in Denmark think that Freedom of Speach means 1) zero responsibility and 2) only applies to them.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

The apology is being asked from the newspaper though, not government.

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

6 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 3

this? this counts as a joke these days? its not even remotely clever, just 'topical' damn this community has gotten dumb

Sooo wjats your point? Every country has libel laws.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Which is a subsection under libel laws, still doesn't infringe on the constituions paragraph 77.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Statements under danish libel laws must be denigrating and provably false. You're welcome to write "I think the queen is stupid."

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech_in_Denmark "...yet under responsibility to the courts..."

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hope it's a bad translation, but it sounds like that comedian in Canada being sued for $40k over a joke.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not, but it "only" covers child pornography, state secrets, copyrighted material, hatespeech and libel ( Must be provably false.)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hatespeech has to specificly denigrate people based on race or religion. Libel must be a denigration statement that is provably false.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In short "your mom smells" is fine, "the queen of Denmark is an idiot" is fine, but "bobbob's face is lopsided" is not.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be perfectly fair, they're demanding an apology from the newspaper and not the Danish government.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

And?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

China is not holding the Danish government responsible, but the Danish newspaper. This comment therefore makes little sense.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And before you go off on a tagent here, I'm not supporting their reaction, but it's against the newspaper, not the govt as many here think.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

China still doesn't get that as a concept.

To be fair, the newspaper follow Danish laws and don't answer to China.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

To be fair, I'm perfectly aware of that and never said nor suggested anything else, so not sure who you're talking to.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That is actually what they're asking for, apology from the newspaper, not the government.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

They are asking the newspaper, not the Danish government. Chinese govt sucks, but let's not get too carried away with the China bashing.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

You genuinely believe that? Doesn’t seem like chinas style m8.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I'm a Norwegian and I know that all too well, as China boycotted Norwegian salmon due to the Nobel Peace Prize, but that was a lot more

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

controversial than this, and the Nobel Peace Prize Committee is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, so there's more conflation there.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is literally what they're doing, though. They're demanding an apology from the newspaper, not the Danish government.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But knowing China right, they have no problem severing relations with Danish government over this, but that is a separate discussion.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Precisely. Just because they ask for an apology from the newspaper don’t mean they aren’t fully expecting the government to force it

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was my thought too. They can’t demand an apology, but they can ask for it. By law anything can be bublished. It doesn’t mean it should.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Actually there are plenty sensible restrictions on free speech here in terms of hate speech, slander and libel, etc.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Hate speech? Hardly sensible. It’s too slippery a slope. I would argue that your statement is hate speech itself but you have a right to

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Say it, IMO.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If freedom of speech doesn’t allow someone to say something disgusting, then it’s not working. Most rights are two edged swords.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hatespeech laws are extremely sensible after what we learned from the rise of fascism. Doesn't mean just anything can be hatespeechobviously

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is a bad faith argument, and literally nobody would argue for everything being hatespeech.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He didnt say hate speech was sensible, he called the restrictions to it sensible. And to be fair - anything that limits what you can say

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

is in the way of free speech. That said - i am allowed to say f.e. "death to jews" on the street, but im not free from the repercussions of

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

such offensive behaviour. Either way - the guy you argued didnt have any hate speech, he just said theres sensible restrictions to

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sorry, but IMO, the restrictions to it are not sensible. I realize what he said and I may not have been clear. I don’t agree that

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That makes sense, the way you worded it made it seem like to me that you thought hate speech was what wasnt sensible

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

how is killings dogs worse than killing cows and pigs

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

For one, they’re not actually farmed. Dog meat always involves either stolen pets or stray street dogs. There are absolutely no safeguards(1

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

from a food safety perspective (the poison used by thieves to kill pets has shown up in it). That notwithstanding, dogs co-evolved with (2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

humans as hunting partners & companions, not livestock. Seems like a cosmic abuse of trust to me. (3

Isnt this disrespectful to the victims of the virus

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 30

You need to get a bit less offended by stuff and get your hands dirty helping FOR REAL, not patronizing on the internet.

And why do you think ridiculing China with current events is disrespectful when China IS ridiculing current events?

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

It’s meant as satire on current events. Thus it symbolises what’s happening. Any offence taking from it is voluntary on yours and their part

Well, a lot of people seem to think so. If you're asking my opinion; no, I don't think so.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What disrespect is there? It is a mentioning of the virus and the location of it. Is that wrong? Were the articles in JP respectful?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And trying to censor media surrounding the virus isn't disrespectful to the victims?

6 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 2

Not defending either side, but it doesn't need to be race to be the shittiest.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you call asking for an apology for a disrespectful publication "censorship" then you are widely off the mark

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

If you think that's all they're doing, then YOU are widely off the mark. CCP has been trying to censor social media to curb discussion of it

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Among other things, like arresting people trying to talk about how serious it really is in China because it makes CCP look bad.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you believe they are just asking? Experience contradicts that.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They can do nothing BUT ask. I dunno what experience youre on about tbh

Still protected under freedom of speech in the US, i imagine Denmark has a similar system

§ 77 of our constitution.

I am speaking morally, you are speaking legally. Don't equate the two

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Are you aware what morality is, at least?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The legality is about all we can really debate. Honestly it comes off as insincere when we've seen how China values the lives of its people

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

How is it insincere when i have not justified what china has done? Your whataboutism is meaningless here
