Well you should. Fuckin' un-American bastards.

I really fucking hate people who erupt into bullshit social media outrage over stuff like this. Read the story and think or STFU
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
I hate when people say THIS takes away freedom of speech. Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t know you wanted the freedom to ruin other people’s lives
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
And say you want to harm a group of people who are just living their lives

People assume the entire PD is sitting behind a single phone sending tweets. Anyone seen Brooklyn 99? We all know there's a Gina in every PD

Theyre thoughts when theyre in you head. When they come out theyre something else.

Wow cue the false outrage machine. God forbid they go after hate crimes and hate speech.

Sure, that seems rational, reasonable, not one-sided at all.
WhatRaySay
Yup, I bet the police department threw millions of pounds of resources at a transphobic tweet while watching a white man die slowly. Awful.
SFMGifs
They spent time and effort contacting the businesses of people who liked and reposted the tweet. That seems a bit much

British police can go fuck themselves. Too busy caring about typed out words rather than investigating on the spot crimes. Cunts.

Can confirm that Humberside Police are pretty fucking useless. Even before the police cuts.
TheBlackWindHowls
For fuck's sake, they made a phone call to the guy, who was an ex-cop, over his transphobic posts, because hate speech is illegal in the UK.
reykjavikparadise
WHY THE fuck is "hate speech" even a thing? Grow a god damn spine! Who cares what someone else thinks of you.
TheBlackWindHowls
Because words can be weaponized, used to incite violence and hatred.
reykjavikparadise
Is resilience so hard to build these days?
AdrianAmato
Yeah, we should all be allowed to threaten people and advise people to commit terrorism since we have the right to free speech! That means
AdrianAmato
nothing we could say should ever be illegal.
TheBlackWindHowls
But, no, let's pretend like they raided his home with militarized police because he "Liked a limerick." Can't fuck with the narrative.

@OP oh truly UK is an Orwellian nightmare. An officer was given a stern talking to for mocking and belittling trans people. OH THE HORROR!
ImTheKimJongIllest
Getting charged for hate crimes for posting song lyrics or teaching a dog a dumb salute sounds Orwellian enough to me.
Rexli78
Rexli78
How come every time people like you try and paint the UK as an Orwellian nightmare you use the same two examples?
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
It’s not Orwellian. You can say whatever you want as long as you’re not citing violence (eg saying you want to kill etc) or ...
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
Targeting people in particular. Targeted bullying can be a real issue and once it gets past a certain point should absolutely be illegal
JamJarre
I feel like the venn diagram of people taking a handful of isolated incidents and crying about thought police, and people who always say
JamJarre
"Not all men" is a perfect circle
Sareva

SuperfluityofNaughtiness
Always someone crying on a post like this. If it doesn't bother you that people can't speak freely, then you ARE the fucking problem
JamJarre
Found one
JamJarre
Really though I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of being offended by generalisations against you but then talking about thought police
Craicerjack
If it doesnt bother you that people harass and hate others just for the way they are then YOU are the fucking problem.
SuperfluityofNaughtiness
Some people 100% bring it upon themselves, so don't dare call me the fucking problem
JamJarre
"He brought it on himself by being who he is"... you sound like a charmer. A total catch!
Craicerjack
Ah so its okay to have free speech to shit on other people, but don't dare use any of that free speech on you?
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
People can speak freely about their views. Attacking a specific person and calling them slurs shouldn’t be accepted.
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
Also saying you want to kill/rape/torture a certain group of people shouldn’t come under protected speech either. How is that just a view?
SuperfluityofNaughtiness
Making it illegal is something else, entirely. If internet trolls want to be internet trolls, they should have every legal right.
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
No. They should not have every right to make someone’s life a living hell and drive them to suicide.
SuperfluityofNaughtiness
Why always talk about extremes? In the case that a person is that emotionally unstable, they shouldn't be engaging internet trolls
AMBM2
Its worth mentioning that the definition of 'hate speech' in England includes threats and intent to cause violence. Its also a 10 second
AMBM2
'investigation' vs one of possible hundreds of calls investing vague claims of someone's 'wellbeing' with no actual sign of danger, each
AMBM2
aking hours. The 'hate speech' in this case is could be far more likely to be connected to, or leading up to, actual intent of violence.
AMBM2
Basically this complaint might boil down to "why did you spend 5 minutes investigating the continuous death threats on your profile but
AMBM2
not a couple days investigating me feeling nervous," and while the outcome was sad, the police wouldn't know that until after. But heh,
AMBM2
it involves trans people, so fuck them right?
failedtodelete
The current laws are bullshit, though. There was some girl arrested for rap lyrics, some idiots made a joke about the london riots
failedtodelete
and were uninvolved in them, and they were arrested. There are lots of other exaamples
AMBM2
Do you have the 'rap lyrics' story?
failedtodelete
4 and that's why she got arrested, which to me basically makes this all a huge pile of bullshit
failedtodelete
3 Also, I read somewhere that what happened wasn't that it was reported, but that a police officer saw and decided it was offensive
failedtodelete
2 it was fucking stupid to post, but I would say that I feel like there wasn't racist intent here, and she shouldn't have been arrested
failedtodelete
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-43816921 I don't have the post itself, but it was a snoop dogg song, it had the nword
AMBM2
huh ok weird
AMBM2
This makes a lot more sense when you realize 'hate speech' includes threats and intents to incite violence, and while sad, to the police
AMBM2
Lisa's call was probably one of a hundred calls of people feeling nervous about someone they know. Hindsight is 20/20. But hey, fuck trans
AMBM2
people right?
DarkNinja2462
Why do you think this keeps going around here?
AMBM2
Because of the last line, "fuck trans people, right?"
DarkNinja2462
Yep
SuperfluityofNaughtiness
1. Noone is saying fuck trans people (double entendre). But seriously, stop being dramatic. People talk shit without threatening and it can
SuperfluityofNaughtiness
3. Christians for example (and endlessly so) and what government official gives a rip? Can't develop new morality, you will lose in the end
AMBM2
If I go into work and start harassing or threatening someone and say its because he's christian and I think Christianity should be
AMBM2
banned, I'd get in trouble at work and no one would argue in my favor. If I did the same but said it was because the person was trans
SuperfluityofNaughtiness
2. Still be viewed as hate speech. Freedom of speech is being constricted when you talk about certain groups, but people talk shit about
Fahargo
I will never support a system that criminally condemns disagreeing with transgenderism.
AMBM2
"Condemns disagreeing" vs "investigates threats and potential violence"
Fahargo
So you agree there should never be a punishment for misgendering someone purposely, for saying transgenderism is a mental disorder?
ThatNoPicklePeeThatNoPumpARum
No one criminally condemns anything like that. If you're inciting violence on the other hand, then yes.
Groznek
I think the thing that piques my interest here is that I've never seen the 'limerick' in question.
YeahButIThinkIAteIt
The limerick was just one of over 30 tweets the guy made or retweeted that resulted in the police phoning him. Just an FYI. Kinda tiring 1/
YeahButIThinkIAteIt
that every time I see one of these outrage porn comments, it's frequently been twisted & distorted like this. But as for the limerick... 2/
Groznek
Like, this shit could be a cute little rhyme about bashing trans folks' heads in for all I know. It could also NOt be that, but people
Groznek
have made a point of not actually posting it, so it feels like people pretending it's less nasty than it actually is.

failedtodelete
It's not that PC culture has gone too far (it is partly that) that ultimate matters, it's that policing the internet
failedtodelete
has so far failed to truly demonstrate that context and intention are being taken into account.
failedtodelete
A girl was posted for posting snoop dogg lyrics. It had the nword in it, probably best not to post it, but still it's hard to say that
failedtodelete
it can be considered to be offensive in context because it's a quotation of a song written by a black guy.
failedtodelete
And it's not like she had any discernible intention
ImTheKimJongIllest
It’s gone too far when the policing of jokes or crudeness, even prejudicial crudeness, comes before protecting life.
xKaraKx
Nice strawman i suppose. Very reductionist
AMBM2
Yes. It always seemed to be it is less 'people are more sensitive about abuse/harrassment" and more "there used to be some groups that
AMBM2
were seen as acceptable targets for abuse/harrassment and aren't anymore." If I threaten to injure someone, I could always get in trouble,
AMBM2
but if that person is trans, then people will complain it was my freedom of speech.
tedharris02
A girl in England was fined & given a community order for reposting rap lyrics on her Instagram, cuz it was deemed racist and offensive.
failedtodelete
From what I read somewhere, it wasn't reported, it was just seen by a police officer who read it and decided it was offensive
failedtodelete
the failure to consider context is the major issue here. I'm not sure to what extent offensive comments should be criminalised, but I am
failedtodelete
very sure that you have to consider context and intention as major players.
EricEss
I mean, as an American, speech should only ever be criminalized if it's an actual incitement to violence, like shouting "Fire" in a theatre
JackalopeElope
But this is men with guns going to your house and saying don't post that or we will fine or jail you. Are you for that?

The problem here is it all hinges on a police officer's whim. If he's having a bad day or doesn't like your face... hard luck old chum.
EneZio
That’s the problem, the rules for reasonable force are too vague and leave too much space for personal opinions. One person might think 1
EneZio
It’s reasonable but someone else may thinks it’s excessive and you get screwed for pushing someone over

DirkNurple
This is because using a gun is a nuclear option. We’re trigger happy enough. We can’t make them appropriate for “maybe” type situations.
ThrowPETAtoTheVeganLions
Yeah but you guys are actually allowed to kill the intruders instead of wasting taxpayer money locking them up in a criminal training school
pinkypiesbutt
that's not really true. You have to prove they intended to harm you. You cant just shoot them in the back
veteransgrow
Depends on the state and if they have a stand your ground law. Some states you can be convicted for harming an intruder
MaladaptedMedic
You won't be convicted for killing them though. If you say "He said he had a gun and was gonna hurt me", you're home free.
