When management gets AOL to dial in and then search Facebook for what is being said about them on here they are going to be pissed.
imemmental
You guys are even getting pizza parties?
ThanksForTheThing

Pizza, the great equalizer.

Pizza always made me feel better.

And the pizzas come off their taxes. Infuriating.
slinkiisu
I'm getting real sick of the pineapple hate from people who have probably never tried it
SuperOwem
Yeah! It's my favourite pizza topping, which has zero impact on anyone else.

May everyone’s pizza be none and beef be left on this blessed day.

I had this toy! Wow…the wave of millennial nostalgia is real…
swedeonamoose
Feels like at one point the Turtles toy team just kinda said, fuck it, and shit jsut went crazy.
DrankTooMuchMead
I had the pizza thrower, which was kind of like a tank with a powerful motor inside.
Elnauriel
Me too! Load the top with pizzas and push the grey button on the side to fling them out. The spinning effect from the motor gave them some good stability and flew really well. =)

Sad thing is, this pizza thing going is the absolute best thing a lot of managers are able to do. We laugh and joke, but they're usually getting fucked even harder. It's top level we should be pissed off with. Don't shoot the messenger

If my managers, which practically outnumber employees, weren't so full of clout, I'd agree.
skolyr
Yeah, I'd buy pizza or some other food almost weekly for my team completely out of pocket. Fairly often I'd bring in something I made myself, especially on holidays.
Navrodel
And honestly? No, the memes are right, a pizza party isn't a replacement for the fair compensation and less stressful conditions that employees need, but that doesn't mean it's completely without merit. If it's actually a small party - instead of just "we got you the cheapest lunch we could, eat it while you work like usual" - the break and the time to bond with coworkers actually does help morale. At a good job, it can be just what you need. Just, y'know, needs to not be all you get.
Emiloo74
Yep. My job as a manager is to offload a lot of the bs so my people can do their work. I run interference as best I can. And, I try to show appreciation in ways that aren't pizza days unless that is what my people want.
matthias451
True some of the time. I had a manager buy all 9 of his employees including me 50 dollar gift cards because that was year corporate decided Christmas gifts and bonuses were permanently ended. 2008 He was a good dude, and he later said it wasn't that hard on him, he made like 65k plus he still got sizeable bonuses each quarter and end of year, and cost of living was considerably less. I've also had several managers the last 10 years who suck. Sit in the office playing cell games and do jack shit
matthias451
While having a veteran employee like myself do inventory, receive new products, make the biweekly schedule and manage the coworkers. Made 3 times what I do to play Words with Friends or whatever. Sometimes he'd leave for a week or two to "manage" another property and it made zero difference. He literally wasn't a part of the system at all, just got a paycheck. But the owner thought he was great.

(1/2) My last job I was ops manager for a fine dining restaurant. When I came in morale was totally depleted, so I set out to try and change that. I made the mistake of writing an email suggesting we address this in a meeting. When I walked in, everything was normal and friendly. Then I was asked to close the door for the meeting. As soon as I sat back down, our director of ops immediately started yelling at me demanding names of employees complaining. It was straight up verbal abuse.
justanotherscreamintothevoid
(2/2) They didn't give a shit about morale, and they just wanted to see if they could weed out the people they felt were causing dissent. I quit a month later.
jennytornado
I've been lucky enough to sit in one of these screaming "we don't give two shits about morale, you're free to leave if you don't like it" meetings. I didn't like it. I did leave. Not everyone has that opportunity and it wasn't immediate but first chance I got.
Whiskeyramen
As a former department manager, we were barely making it. Unless you're the top manager and maybe his or her lackey, everyone was struggling. Even then, the "free" pizza wasn't even being paid for by the manager. They don't spend a penny to help anyone.
kyro
CEO recently canned the middlemanager that used to arrange lunch for employee meetings. CEO still loves his regular mandatory all-hands meetings, but hates having to pay for lunch for it - so he halted that perk entirely.
zimirken
Okay, I'll go to lunch after then.
portraitsforfriends
No you skip the meeting and go to lunch.
BadTemperedRodent
Depends. Sometimes companies also have bullshit policies (such as with vacation PTO vs personal time PTO or unpaid time-off), that managers can help employees by softening how preposterous they are. Or navigating what is allowed vs not allowed on expense reports. Small things like that over time can build camaraderie, so at least when the pizza is bought by the manager, the gesture has more credibility. And yeah, also absolutely pushing back on higher up's requests for more work from a busy team
jennytornado
True and fair. My direct manager actually goes to bat for us on the reg and I'm super grateful. I've found that to be the case of most of my direct managers despite their own struggles with the powers that be.
ThomasThundersword
yep. as a manager at my old job, i had exactly 0 authority over pay. and ever time i tried to improve quality of life, if my boss found out, it was usually scrapped. and my performance reviews of my people were constantly ignored. it was depressing watching them bust their asses and not be properly treated. all of our best people ended up quitting, and fuck i can’t blame them, i ended up quitting too.
DiabloGrandeArts
Oh man, I was a manager at my previous job. When it was time for reviews, some of my dudes were really killing it, so I gave them "exceed expectations". Upper management sent it back and told me I had to redo them because I wasn't allowed to give them anything above "meets expectations", because then they would have to give them raises, and they didn't wanna do that.
jennytornado
That's horrifying! Ugh.
Thornaxe
Wow. musta been tempting to share that information with the workers and watch the place burn down.
DiabloGrandeArts
Oh, I did! We got outsourced about 6 months later, anyway.
