During the last recession we knew shit was about to go bad. I worked in a shop with 11 other guys. They asked me and another guy to go up to the front office and move furniture. I’m like this is where HR walks in and lays us off. Got done and walked back to the shop. Owner was there with a cop. Other 10 co workers were gone. I had to help them load their tools the following week. Horrible times. They transferred other people into our shop to partially restaff to 6.

This. Cant say it enough. As someone who survived three rounds of cuts and two years of salary freezes…then left. New role ended up being the best of my life.

It’s WAY easier to get a job when you have a job.
Find jobs that’s you are interested and tailor your resume to fit those specifically…I used to have three resumes.

I've been on both sides of this. If you want to help people who were laid off you can 1) offer to be a reference, 2) write a recommendation on linkedin (assuming your field uses it), 3) offer to meet up for a beer or coffee (it's a lot easier to become socially isolated when unemployed).

Search while you're still employed. That many layoffs is a huge red flag that either the company is sinking, management has caught the "always be cutting" bug (some damn executive at Boeing and/or some investment company in the 1980s got the idea that you should always fire 10% of your workforce every year or something like that, and then everybody else followed suit), or both.

As someone who had been laid off more than once, GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND GET OUT NOW! Your day is coming, don’t believe otherwise. If they are into multiple rounds of leveraging payroll, the ship is sinking and the water is up to your neck.

hey man i work in the humanitarian and development sector. in the last two years we've lost half our colleagues globally. it's been a bloodbath. my specific organization is doing a round of layoffs soon and im like 70% sure I'm gone. it's pretty hard to have committed my life helping the poor and vulnerable at a lower salary than othr comparable jobs and still get cut all because of some dickhead in Florida.

Not the managers per se. Managers are intentionally inserted as a strategic buffer/abstraction between the workers and the deciders. "We're cutting 15% staff, you figure out who"

Survivors Guilt is real. As someone who survived 2 rounds and then got fired in the 3'rd after 20 years, trust me. Those of us who do get cut, do not blame the rest of you.
We blame the incompetent management, who NEVER seems to get cut. And if they do, they get a golden parachute.

As someone laid off twice, that's survivors guilt. Just keep doing you. If new jobs open, pitch them to old colleagues and friends. You're absolutely loved.

The fear of job hunt kept me stagnating at a company for 8 years being paid peanuts and renting rooms to survive while boss was working from a corner office. Shop around for a job while at work. People don't pay more for what they already have, they pay more for what they need. So you won't see oay raises from your job for years to come. But will see all the work laid on you from all the folks they fired. Don't be the person hanging on to a sinking ship. Did it twice and it kills you

3rd round? thats a sign. start looking back during the second round of layoff. speaking as someone whos been in your shoes at least twice you've got only so many paychecks ahead of you til they are selling the place
and hope the people who already got let go are your buddies as they will be the ones to give you your next job. they probably feel more sorry for you as they immediately yoink up all the secure open jobs out there right now. they are first out first in. youll be the straggler.
