I think the governor should just call the special election. Period. Let the GOP sue to stop him and testify under oath that McConnell is capable of performing the job. Dodging the question and maybe lying to the press is one thing; lying to the court is entirely another.

The problem is the left is full of people who are fine with the status quo. That would require a spine and is too much for 99% of Dems. Mamdani and like 5 others are the only ones with the balls to do it and they're not in a position in the government to do so.

Not just Mitch though, anyone in the state. See, the Republicans in our statehouse knew McConnell would die on Beshear's watch, so they changed the law allowing him to appoint Senate members in such a case, and then the court upheld it as fine.

The law isn't "The Governor declares and election to fill the seat whenever he declares that the seat is vacant" its "The Governor declares an election when the seat BECOMES vacant." The case does not depend on whether or not McConnell is a vegetable, but on whether the seat was vacant at the time of the announcement of the special election, which requires either Mitch McConnell being officially pronounced dead or for him to have stepped down. Still wouldn't work. If you haven't figured it out yet, Trump can only do shit that Congress (or more accurately, the Republican members of Congress) are the mechanism by which he is stopped. The Governor, does not have that convience because he is still has to deal with a Republican State House who, very specifically, stripped him of a lot of power in this for this exact scenario. ... great situation for anything like that because, with the election in November and McConnell retiring at the end of the term, all you'll get is either case being declared moot because Mitch McConnell is fine and serves out the last 5 months as Senator or it is declared moot because Mitch McConnell is no longer Senator because it's been 5 months and his term expires.

It's not worth doing much more than demand transparency on this issue. Say it, magically works out and no Republicans fight back and the aides Weekend and Bernie'ing Mitch's corpse go "awe schucks, you got us." We'd get a special election in November, to fill a seat for a grand total 2 months, before it is filled by the winner of the General election, that was held the same day as the special election.
