Hey, Rosario - quick question: have you considered the possibility that things could get WORSE than they are now?
Not all change is good.
And speaking of being careful about what you wish for...
So, crab bucket mentality is why Democrats lost the election.
Got it.

"there's been no change!"
khora
Anything above 0 means prices are going up. So "prices going up" hasn't changed.
imtiredboss
They expected deflation. Prices remain high and their wages not making up for it. But hey California voted down the higher minimum wage prop so wages caught up too. The "this will cause inflation" scared them out of it, yet inflation occurred anyway without wages raising for the common worker. 2+2 = 5.
sirava
Looks like a good pandemic recovery to me. But of course that's not what Fox News said.
theplantladyisabenevolentruler
Yes inflation went down, but most people don’t fully appreciate that inflation means rate of increase.
When working class people say inflation, they mean prices are going up and causing financial stress. Bringing down inflation didn’t bring down prices, and certainly didn’t address corporate price gouging, which is the real monster in the room causing financial stress.
kittyanya
And Kamala said they were starting to investigate it finally, but they have to leave office in January and orange is NOT gonna investigate.
Josefbugman1543
Oh great, an investigation! Maybe next a study, or a report and it'll be 4 years later and peoples lives will be worse but fuck we produced a study, what more do you icky plebs want.
Sidewaysgts
I have to explain to people all the time it’s inflation not deflation.
theplantladyisabenevolentruler
Yes! It’s a tough concept in the current ecosystem, especially when there’s lots of misinformation muddying the water around the topic. And very few people have taken an economics class, that’s a privileged experience.
I think shifting the conversation away from inflation to financial stress is a good path forward, because that’s actually what people mean
VictusVonGuyver
Two weeks ago I helped a fellow immigrant who fell in hard times apply for a new job since she ended up on the street. She said that with the new president she hoped he fix everything. I warned her he planned to deport us. She looked at me confused. "He'd only depart the Spanish speakers, not us Portuguese speakers. They are ruining everything"
I wanted to pull my hairs out, especially when I explained to her that he's racism isn't exclusive to them. She didn't want to hear it.
VictusVonGuyver
*his racism

It's cute that she thinks Republicans know that Portuguese and Spanish are different languages

Or that what language they speak even matters. It's how you look, period.

I've got a lot of indian neighbors in my apt, b/c there's a grad school nearby. I went to college with a lot of indian exchange students, too. One of them, a guy, stopped by to say hi after election and was smiling big "trump won!" I asked why he thought that was a good thing. "b/c he'll make america great again for us guys." My man, Trumps' talked about going after the H1B program. He wants to get rid of all the "brown people". His eyes got big, as he realized shit was about to get real.

JustAPileOfCats
People think vice presidents get to set the agenda and change shit. 😑 Morons.
theplantladyisabenevolentruler
I mean, ignorant yes, but how old were you when you learned the VP is shut out of anything important?
Education in the US is shit by design, and political shows like veep or west wing targeted white collar and *white* people, so I’m not surprised that most working class people don’t know that the VP is impotent in the US system.
kerms
Propaganda is why the Democrats lost. Propaganda is why people said "the economy" was their top concern despite having the best recovered post-covid economy in the world with the lowest inflation. The right wing media told them to be mad about an economy and so they did exactly that.
colderfish
El Salvadoran guy at the cafe has his citizenship. He voted trump because Trump was going to deport the illegals. I asked about the guys in the kitchen and their families (I know theyr are here illegally). "Trump is only going to deport the bad ones. Those guys work. He likes people who work"
As if ICE was gonna be like , "oh, Jorge says you are a hard work, so you stay and your family". I didn't argue, it's too late, I just told him that's not what is gonna happen and left.
GlenL
So . . .morons who don't know how the government functions is the reason
MajMalfunction2
Can we pass out a test to make sure you're smart enough to vote?
Tariffs are paid by whom?
True or false...the president can influence gas and grocery prices.
Does the president have the power to deport anyone he wishes to?
SleepyHollowAppleTree
I hope they get what they voted for.
Illinifan88
This is why Republicans have been working so hard to destroy the education system. It's worked. People are fucking morons.
People are right that shits expensive. But anyone with more than a couple of functioning brain cells understands that literally everything Trump is proposing will make things MORE expensive. Possibly by a lot.
I feel bad for the people who voted for Kamala that will be hurt by this. But I hope every potential voter who didn't vote for her suffers immensely.
theplantladyisabenevolentruler
Saying that US education is terrible and then shaming people for the ignorance that was designed by the people trying to impoverish them doesn’t follow.
You’re right that this is by design, so we need to build working class solidarity, build relationships where people can feel heard by us and get better information. This isn’t about brain cells, it’s about isolation and understandable ignorance.
Illinifan88
Your assumption that I'm saying there is no sense of personal responsibility is incorrect.
There is a level of willfull ignorance by these people. The failing of our education system is that it doesn't destroy the idea that ignorance is an option. For the vast majority of people, a choice is made at some point that this is the path they want.
theplantladyisabenevolentruler
“this is the path they want”
They were sold a story by very real propaganda, and we know that propaganda works. They didn’t get the same info you or I did. Social media is owned by billionaires and we know the algorithms are skewed. Most mainstream media is owned by billionaires, the editors of big news outlets were barred from endorsing Harris by the owners. It takes so much effort to filter out propaganda, but sure let’s blame poor people w/limited education and resources and call them stupid
theplantladyisabenevolentruler
2/ Yes, there are hateful people who blatantly want what the GOP wants, but they are not the majority. Most people do not understand economics or the political system, *by design*

Jarjarthejedi
Yep. Time after time I see these "why the D's lost" articles published, and every time while the author /tries/ to make it about something else, it boils down to "a bunch of idiots voted to punch themselves in the face because they were too stupid to realize that would hurt". Just sucks seeing what decades of education cuts have led to. :(
StarmineRendezvous
And complaining Harris didn't do anything to fix the economy as VP? That isn't her job. She has no real powers to do so.
historycat
But conservative bloggers create the talking points and the main stream media promotes it.
They don't report on "Here's what the VP can and cannot do" they report only on "people feel...." which is not reporting.
BEARD3DBEANIEE
Honestly this made me realize we might need the electoral college smh, but then all the gerrymandering is why we don't
historycat
The EC isn't gerrymandered. The EC follows states.
The problem with the EC is we've made it impossible for the EC to break from state votes.
Also we've made it so that small populations are way over represented.
If we added 2100 seats to the House of Representatives, which we could do easily. People would be better represented and smaller populated states would have much less influence in the EC but more in the house.
We only need to change 1 law to make that happen. Not the constitution.

Sadly the USA is full of ppl just as if not even more ignorant and or dumb. It's sad to see.
Larktonguesinadicecup
It's a really normal reaction to fear and pressure - jumping out of the life raft, running into the jungle instead of staying in the shelter, etc. people can't stand the psychological stress, so they make an ill-considered change in a bid to improve conditions, while people who are able to think more rationally under stress, are better informed, or are simply less desperate, watch and shake their heads. This is how people die outside in the wilderness; an inability to sit still and wait.
CoachMcgurl
You do know and you said it. Ignorant voters. I was listening to the "Even More News" podcast and the hosts said the same thing. Most people aren't politically minded. They might hear about a bill or something that makes the news but they won't read it. They're too busy. People have kids, jobs, or other stuff and they're tired and don't want to deal with politics. People also trust their gut feelings way too much.
imtiredboss
You know, this goes against "go out and vote", but you're free to abstain if you don't feel you know enough. Local school district races or judge elections? There's often zero information on those races so I leave those spaces empty. I had been an ignorant voter myself when I first voted at 18. Heard news of a governor recall and I had no idea why, just felt I wanted to stick it to a politician. It goes to show how much money matters because I certainly didn't hear anything on the other side.
CoachMcgurl
There's was a recall whose reason you couldn't....recall?
EchoPMIM
Yeah. People are, justifiably, not happy with the status quo, they're just often not well-informed enough to grasp what will make things better or worse, so they voted by who seemed most likely to shake things up. Actual policy doesn't really matter to most voters, in the end.
knuckledeepinacatgirl
That I think more than anything, is what was so frustrating this election for me. Harris addressed many concerns people had, laid out how she wanted to try and fix those problems, but somehow people just.... didn't get the memo... and went for the guy who had no plans, but kept shouting "trust me bro" as loud as possible.
nevernotsure
"but egg prices!"
neverhappytoasterdog
It’s the president we deserve. Not me, but as a country. You gonna be that stupid? The rest of us pay the price.
Mgxr44
I get the frustration, but people feel like the Dems abandoned them (which they did) and they only have two choices and no time to figure it out.
AranaDiscoteca
No, no it's worse than that. This was "What did she do as vice president" because the line Trump parroted was taken up. And not nearly enough people pointed out the powers of the vice president are similar to the powers of the person behind the driver's seat to control where the car goes.
freakdiablo
"We feel like the Dems abandoned us, so we voted for the party actively trying to hurt us."
Mgxr44
Trump didn’t get that many new votes. Sorry people weren’t happy for the scraps Biden gave em. Are you at least half as angry at the Dems for being awful as you are for people not voting for them?
freakdiablo
No.
Mgxr44
You don’t see that as an issue? You’re more angry at people desperately grasping for help… and not the Dems refusing to help them?
dragonmaster5
The problem with that is when the choices are either: fascists or not fascists it doesn’t matter if the Democrats have lived up to every expectation; there’s no excuse for voting in the fascists.
Mgxr44
Trump didn’t actually get that many more votes, the big difference is Kamala got a lot less. Cause she’s awful. Also, the democrats aren’t anti fasc, they love doing that shit all over the world
historycat
How did they. Tell me specifically.
Mgxr44
Finally we get Biden, also faux progressive who runs on free childcare/community college, min wage hike, no fracking, student debt relief, codify roe…. Doesn’t do any of that. doesn’t go after Trump in a way that will mean anything, is a genocidal lunatic, tells people to suck it up
Mgxr44
Sure, so it’s really starts with Carter, he’s basically the like beta version of a neoliberal that basically says the government shouldn’t be helping people. Then we get Clinton who is probably the worst democrat president EVER. Deregulates banking, lets mass amounts of jobs go over seas, guts welfare, the crime bill that targets poors and blacks
Mgxr44
Next we get Obama, who runs on a super progressive platform: public option, codify roe, going after bankers, pulling out of wars, going after bush admin for lying us into wars, bailing out people affected by the bankers… does NONE OF IT. Even starts a new war, and bails out the bankers on top of it
Mgxr44
Which leads us to Kamala, who ran the most conservative campaign by a Democrat in decades. And are now saying the issue is the party is too progressive.
historycat
How is "heres a ton of cash for buying a house or small business" or "abortions for everyone" or "no one needs an assault rifle" conservative?
The media said she was conservative but wealth tax and expanded health care say different.
GlenL
Well, when your choices are "Party that tanked the economy" vs "party that fixed the economy that the last party tanked" and your primary concern is the economy, it shouldn't take you that long to figure out who to vote for
BaelKor
The people you talk about, who "feel" Democrats abandoned them, are stupid. Because that didn't actually happen. So these people vote, based on their wrong feelings, for the Republicans who will actively hurt them? Like I said, stupid.
Mgxr44
I can get into actual policy promises and positions if you want, but you’re just flat out wrong
Mgxr44
When they don’t have to, like when they already have power, or can avoid a primary, they shift right.
Mgxr44
The Democratic Party wants to continue that way. And really only doesn’t when it’s forced to through primaries like in 08 and 2020
Mgxr44
No, that’s you not being educated on the history of the Dems. They used to be a super progressive party and abandoned all that. Peak right wing democrats were bill clinton.
L3NTON
There is only 2 choices, that's the product of a bad system. Feeling like the party you most align with has left you behind is one thing, and I would understand if people in that camp chose not to vote. However there is a big difference between feeling left behind by your own party and then voting for the opposition that is very open and outspoken about how they hate you and all the bad shit they have planned for you and your friends/family.
Mgxr44
Trump didn’t get some record shattering amount of votes. The difference is mostly that people who did vote for Biden were disillusioned with the Dems… sorry you feel like they should be grateful for their scraps. Stop blaming voters and start blaming douche bags like Biden
Frederf
That's terrible... there are only two choices. Choices is plural.
SPQAAE
There are so many people who don't use the internet or read the news, or worse watch only one news source. So they've basically made up their minds and watch their news source because it feeds into their algorithm. For example my parents watch Fox news from the moment they wake to the moment the sleep some days. You cannot educate someone who doesn't want to or doesn't know how.
MadamPuddifoot
I cut off my gram before the election Bernadette of shit like this, and I miss her dearly but my god, I couldn't take it. She is a "bury your head in the sand". I unleashed on her earlier this week. About Gaza, and how she's prolly gonna lose her social security, and how I refuse to do nothing as rights get stripped away - like she did when they were throwing rocks at Ruby Bridges.
AbdulMasaiev
You don't really have to "use the internet or read the news" to be aware that the incoming guy is not, in fact, "someone new".
neverhappytoasterdog
It takes 2 seconds to figure out he’s a grifter, a con man, a rapist, snake oil salesman, a liar, a thief. Someone who hasn’t contributed anything good in his life. Take, take, take. How can ppl be so willfully blind?
Salticido
There are also so many people who actively avoid news and say they "don't like" politics, like it's some insignificant hobby they can safely ignore.
Neorago
I think also a lot of people don't realize that the wins or fails of an administration, in particular in the first year or 2, are often the result of what the administration before them did. Again, the failure of the education system in teaching people to think and reason is being felt at every level.
peedrinkingcrapface
the only problem with the Failure of Education Theory is that it assumes there was ever an era of educational success in the US, when public schools were filling Middle America with enlightened and responsible voters. in fact, all personal and historical evidence points to the opposite conclusion: that people of the recent past were on average even dumber, more vicious, and more narrow-minded than they are today.

Exactly, smooth brains think that oh it sucks now...must mean. "The person in charge....IT'S THEIR FAULT!" Things take time to take effect.

The stats show that it’s race and racism. Even within “uneducated” groups, if you break down by race, white was majority for trump and non-white were (correctly) against trump. But because there’s numerically more white people in most groups, it makes the stats look like “uneducated people voted trump” when it was actually “uneducated white people.”
RawSuger
kinda. she lost by like 100K votes, so she lost due to the crabbucket mentality of 0.1% of the population
prepbatman
Kamala lost the popular vote by 2.3M. Coincidentally, about as much as she won California by.
UnbridledStupidity
Except that if that crab bucket mentality weren’t so prevalent, she’d have won by a lot more than those 100k votes.
Goldensands
Yikes that's a lot of copium. She lost because americas rotten culture.
Mgxr44
She lost cause she represents the system. If you’re even a half way decent candidate, you’d blow Trump (a historically unpopular candidate) out of the water.
RawSuger
again, in a narrow loss the reasoning of the few ppl whose vote decided it are gonna be varied
comehomefransbrauder
Please explain how she was not a "half way decent" candidate?
Mgxr44
She’s a corporate shill, she’s not pro justice system reform, pro gun control, she completely avoided anything about the environment. Our immigration platform is awful and racist.
Mgxr44
Sure, she has a long history of being pro police state, she’s currently supporting a genocide, she abandoned a lot of progressive policies she used to be behind. Including universal healthcare.
comehomefransbrauder
A police state? Where'd you get that from? And she's called for ceasefire in Gaza.
Mgxr44
You should read about her time as DA in California… And she called for a cease-fire… While continuing to send them weapons, while also saying she would never stop sending them weapons…
WebDragonG3
idiots. it was primarily some 14,000,000 dems sitting this one out over Gaza, or voting third party as their "protest vote" that caused this. It's plainly obvious. Even Trump had 3,000,000 fewer votes than last time. If Dems had just shown up in the same numbers they did to reject him last time, he would have been soundly defeated. instead those selfsame self-important Dems handed him a re-election that should NEVER have happened in any sane society.
Nim449
I think you're correct except for one point. Most of those weren't actually registered 'Dems'. They were progressives and independents who would normally vote Democratic. They rejected Harris' establishment, center-right positioning... and so now we all get extreme-right policies. imho it's a bit like shooting yourself in the foot because you don't like the color of your shoes but what do i know.
imtiredboss
The gap between them now is 2 million with nearly the same turn out as last election, if that makes you feel any better. But discouraging the Democratic base is in the playbook for Republicans and it works.
QuigleyDownUnder
Well then, deport her first.
Not my face she screamed as the leapords ate her... face.
TheThingNoNotThatOne
Revenge, schadenfreude, get what you voted for - whatever you want to call it, it's still celebrating fascism.
WhyDontYouMakeMe
You sound like those talking heads on the news that can't understand why people were happy that a CEO was murdered in NYC
TheThingNoNotThatOne
No, I understand why they were happy and I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. I just don't know why people who hate the idea of mass deportations...want mass deportations. Why are you cheering Trump on as he deports this law-abiding immigrant? Why are you helping Trump by calling ICE on undocumented immigrants? Because you disagree with their politics?
You can't defeat fascism by becoming a fascist.
KirchoffsVoltageLaw
Unfortunately that's the mindset of a lot of immigrants in America and the rest of the world.
Photeus
Albuquerque felt like it was full of this. They have a very large population of probably central America or native American descent and they were all about deporting immigrants. Just anecdotal, but felt really absurd to me
KirchoffsVoltageLaw
It's the same in all immigrant communities. Maybe it's a human thing or maybe there's societal norms, maybe both. Personally I want to say it's societal norms because in America, you want to be seen as "white" because that is the easiest way to be treated equally. Heck, just look at how many famous black people will purposely bleach their skin so they feel more accepted. There's entire careers dedicated to studying this so I'll just leave it there.
nasukkin
Here's the thing with these "eat their face, deport them" folk. I've seen what ICE does when they hit someone. They came for one of my illegal immigrant workers at Quiznos. Then they picked up his wife, his kids, and then they came to our Quiznos to start seeing if there were any more there.
Sure. SHE deserves to have her face eaten off. But she will lead the leopards to innocents.

Gonz000
You know, I kinda hate articles like this. "The reason" and it illustrates 2 examples of the same minority. The change of econmics, the voting against your own interest...these things exist across the board. And if we're going to blame specifics, we always seem to ignore the biggest supporter of trump, white people. Trump swayed minorities, but it aint the multicultural aspect that made the biggest dent. "THE reason". Bff. What a joke.
FussyZeus
IMO the biggest reason by far is that Democrats won't make actual leftist policy the actual platform. It's not like it would even be hard to do in this election, exactly because of the cost of living crises that are hitting everybody. Run a platform of hauling rich bastards into congress and shortly after, prison to get the cost of living down and you'd win in a fucking landslide. But no. As always, Democrats try to appeal right, piss off their base, and then point the finger at anyone else.
wadatahmydamie
Their base shows up and votes for them. Leftists aren’t their base. If you were running for office, would you dedicate your finite time and resources trying to appeal to people who won’t show up under the best of circumstances? Biden has forgiven nearly $200b in student debts, and “leftists” outright attacked him for it.
mikeatike
Biden also released the Kids For Cash judge, so I don't give 2 shits what he thinks.
wadatahmydamie
Yeah, I know. Relatively inconsequential mistakes are all it takes for millions of theoretical voters to abandon the Democrat party while helping actual fascists.
That attitude has gotten us far in the last quarter century. Maybe you should keep trying it. I’m sure it’ll work someday, and politicians will campaign towards voters who don’t show up while abandoning the ones who do. Real galaxy brain shit right there.
wadatahmydamie
swedeonamoose
You will end up with the same fucked up shit Sweden got were immigrant criminals somehow cant get deported but people who have lived and worked in the country for years somehow get kicked out =_=
jeejeejerrycotton
Such as who, exactly?
swedeonamoose
Of the top of my head from latest news was Rhamat who has lived here for 9 years now and is getting kicked out back to Afghanistan, and when it comes to criminals it is a mix of laws and the fact that for some reason many of these countries dont want criminals returned to them.
LoudBirb
It's almost like deportation focused initiatives never work and almost always lead to the most harm being done to the "stand up members of the community" because they're easy pickings for border enforcement officers. After all, they don't need to hide and do things by the book as much as they can. Criminals tend to... you know... hide and not report in when asked.
LoudBirb
I keep hearing people talk about the crime rate in Sweden being off the charts "because criminal immigrats", but whenever I try to look up crime rates all I get is a flat line since the 90's: https://www.macrotrends.net/global-metrics/countries/SWE/sweden/crime-rate-statistics
swedeonamoose
The shootings and bombings that include very young offenders is the main issue we struggle with, in the last 3-4 years violent crime is up 28%, and when you are a northern european country you tend to compare with your neighbors and that makes it look so so much worse.
LoudBirb
It doesn't look like it is? It's up that much from 2014, but basically flat from 2004. You got a different source, maybe?
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1315123/sweden-homicide-rate/
Gerokeymaster
You didn't vote for someone new! You voted for the fucking moron who caused the price increases in the first place! I hate how stupid people can be about the most basic understanding of cause and effect and how long it takes for repercussions of things to be felt, because it *always* leads to this cycle of "Rs break things, Ds fix them but it takes time to see the effects, so idiots vote the Rs back in, they take credit for the D fixes". Rinse. Repeat. Only it gets a little worse each time.
imtiredboss
Really wonder how out of touch they are if they think Trump is "new". I am almost certain these types of people voted Trump out the first time because they blamed him for COVID and lockdowns and the subsequent economic down turn. Not because of anything else.
sadurdaynight
Like Admiral Locke said in Matrix.. "you people don't think more than 5 minutes in front of your face. You just gave the enemy the dock!"

draek1
They should have already found out, these are the very very stupid and they will not learn
Gerokeymaster
Yep. I had some sympathy for *some* of them in '16. But every single person who voted for him (or just sat out altogether) this time around knew what they were getting into. None of them sprang into existence in February 2021, they *all* lives through his first term, and deserve to get everything they voted for this time.
