Look, all this motivational shit only works if there is a sense of satisfaction to be derived from drawing something. And for the last few years, it's been difficult to find that satisfaction, even after finishing a drawing.
You don't draw just to draw (unless it's your fucking job). Also it SUCKS ass when it feels like you don't exist to anyone or anything, even as a person or artist, or anything really. Why bother drawing when even people in Discord don't see you?
Ergo, I'm turning 42 next week and I am burnt the fuck out from life, hope is fading, and the Nothing grows stronger and I want this fucking bullshit to stop.
I followed a lot of web comics for quite a long time. Sure, some of them were started by professional artists doing something on the side for fun or ad revenue, but most were just enthusiastic newbies. It may look like ugly little doodles now, but then you're looking back on it a decade later and suddenly they're the art director of Steven Universe (RPG World, Ian Jones-Quartey) Or Dan Shive or Tom Fischbach - 2 decades later, still drawing, unrecognizably improved. It's more important to start.
Yeah, this is missing step 1, which is the desire to draw more than a stick figure. I simply don't have that desire. Which means I'll never be good at art, which I'm fine with.
I do have creative pursuits, just that drawing isn't one of them. I need it a little bit for some sketching of designs, but I'm already able to do what I need, so I don't care if I'm ever any better than I already am. Good enough for something that doesn't really interest me.
what I've learned from seeing several artists evolve is, you start by drawing something more substantial than a stick figure and it'll probably turn out crummy, then you look at how others draw and make the next one less crummy, and so on going through lots of paper
that is - everyone started out bad and it getting good took work
there was a strip a week or so ago that said something about girl characters being more popular on patreon, and...that joke got shen a bunch of new subscribers, so...they've just kinda been rolling with it as a meta joke.
(i think...shen is op, so you can probably just ask them)
Heh! I wanted to draw something random, and "a snail wearing sports shoes" somehow popped up in my head for some reason, and then I was like "now, how would a snail wear shoes...?"
that's how it starts, then it feels...comfortable, so you just roll with it for a while, then, well you examine things and make a decision about yourself.
Yes, *her* left. There's no way that's a wrist though. Joking aside, I'm pretty sure that's her middle through pinkie fingers being represented in a blob.
If you look at Liefeld's early stuff, a lot of it is pretty conventionally good. So it's less that he's bad at art and more that he draws that way on purpose, apparently.
man his perspective angle sucks. He has part of the chest exposed like cap is turned slightly towards us....but then his neck/left shoulder are completely out of the view like he doesn't even have them.
It actually makes a lot of sense when you put it side by side with the reference image of Arnold doing a body building pose with HIS LEFT ARM IN FRONT OF HIM, which Rob just… excluded which then makes his whole pec flex make zero sense in the new context
I mean, look up the official art of the Touhou series, from the actual games. Series defined a genre, but the artstyle and a lot of the character design is just so... basic.
Are you kidding me? I'd be too busy being paralyzed with analysis paralysis over finally getting to make a character, and what I want to do, to ever show up.
Scobragon
Wasn't this the guy who did a whole thing over the reception of his bike comic?
bluetechnist
Should she be called Hen now?
Evenmoreuselessname
The two morphs are then Shen and Hen, but not like you'd think? 😆
CouldntCakeLess
Your work evolves in many ways, love it!
JohnDennis1999
That is some amazing 3d work on the pencil. And that blur is putting in some work for speed and depth.
RedCamaro
Great. You just threw the pencil at John Wick.

She Shen is more confrontational the He Shen... You know your audience well
SailorPupitar
She shen, he shen, by the she shore
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
Shen likes their soapbox. But it'd be fun if 女Shen went Asuka on the audience.
Xenarion
He-Shen has had his moments too.
tylerlarson
She-Shen?
"Phenomenal artistic powers were revealed to me the day I held aloft..."
BlindGardener
I prefer to write. It’s more fun for me.
TheMightyMollusk
The first step to getting good at something is the willingness to be bad at it.

No one's born good. Only way to draw well is to draw shit first until you get the knack for it.

I do have some things to say. I love my big titties, I love me catgirls, and I want to love someone else!

This person was downvoted for being the change they want to see? C'mon, imgur...

There is a sizeable contingent of people who hate me for a variety of reasons.

Hell, even Buckley went from B^U to faces with actual emotions.

Am I getting Mandela effect'd? I could swear I've seen this exact comic from shen except using shen's male avatar
Drives11
That's my problem, I have nothing to say to the world. I don't even want to be perceived by the world
kydn
People think I'm good at drawing, I think I'm meh. Whichever it is I know I lack creativity and compunction to get things on paper

No thanks.

Well said. My only desire is occasionally to have a finished quality art, which is why I occasionally commission artists.

Learning how to draw by looking at other people's work and mimicking patterns? Isn't that art theft? /joke

YES.

I know a little bit after 35+ years of drawing badly!

Amazing work, saved and I’ll share as a call to action!

Looks like Shen is pretty good at drawing an egg
Gamer4125
why does everything have to be a trans thing
CrisprCAS
Why are you mad about a joke from over a week ago.
NZSheeps
Step 1: Draw an owl. Step 2: Erase everything that isn't an egg
chaylar
heh
whereismymind86
it's been a great running joke, i mean...maybe a joke, i know it started as a joke...allegedly
CrisprCAS
Started as a 'joke' with F1nnster too
whereismymind86
yep, started as a joke for me too, nice way to ease into exploring things if so inclined. Either way, I'm all for it, whatever makes them happy.
ThatOtherGirlYouKnow
Yep, it do be like that. Whatever @op chooses we'll be there for them, him, or her.
ArenJ6
I wonder how long until some real loser loses their shit thinking you went trans woke.
lizardbones
that was like, 6 years ago at least
ThatOtherGirlYouKnow
The only response is to go woker.
FajitaPrinceofAllMexicans
So is Shen transfem or am I missing something?

Shen started drawing she-Shen to lure people to the Patreon and now it just keeps going. We are...Not sure, really. Research continues.

Writing is also a viable release for expression or creativity.

Also from @OP but many, many years ago:
Woogyface
also starts with a pencil

…Anything that goes through my mind? OK, let's see… a snail wearing sport shoes!

Hello sports-shoes-wearing snail! Meet Stefan!

Hi Stefan! I can't see you!

Colon3OwO
Shen…..I’m starting to question your continued use of the female version of yourself (not that I’m complaining :3)
intaglioguy
Charles Schultz drew female characters. Al Capp drew Daisy Mae. Get over it.
Colon3OwO
Huh? I wasn’t complaining or saying that he couldn’t lol, I just thought it was funny

Reminder that one of the most popular and highest rated visual novels of all time has art that looks like this.
brandonblk
thats sitll better than i can draw tho

Also see one punch original webcomic
Snooj
Or the original Shrek book.

Cranbananarama
Such a soft and cutesie design and I'm sure nothing harmful will ever happen to her or other characters.
CallMeCourierSix
I'm not sure you can call it cutesie when a girls hands are 3x bigger than they should be and are massively deformed/missing fingers.
Cranbananarama
Just call it chibi, it's fine. *sweeps art under the rug*
TheImgurWarsMadeMe
Yaoi hands' lesser-known variant, yuri hands. And whatever the hell that thing on the right wrist is.
Willowofwisp
Its her thumb, I think
TheImgurWarsMadeMe
Ah, I see.

That's the left wrist

Yes, *her* left. There's no way that's a wrist though. Joking aside, I'm pretty sure that's her middle through pinkie fingers being represented in a blob.

Rob Liefeld is responsible for a lot of how DC and Marvel exist today. He's also notoriously bad at art.

Also: One Piece.
Snooj
One Piece isn't bad, though. It is highly characterized.
FeIineDisrespectFromBehind
One piece is at least purposely unique.
lizardbones
some of it is. Oda himself admits he doesnt know how to draw more than two types of women
Starlatan
Nami and Big Mom
Krossis
Higurashi mentioned
CallMeCourierSix
That is so fucking disturbing.
arikelrecords2000
What is that?

A character from "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" (or "Higurashi When They Cry" depending on how much of a weeb you are)

Have yall seen the peak character design in the latest JoJo's Bizarre Adventure chapter?
Zeterai
Honestly I don't think that's even the weirdest character design in JoJo.
Bizarre is right in the title, it gets a pass.
ryry1237
Somehow it managed to make a wireframe stick guy Jojo-walk
piconuke
*GASP* LA LINEA ?!
mathknight
To be fair, once they drew that background they basically had free reign to do whatever else they wanted.
Deadflower394857
Is this not supposed to be peak?
khaoselement
I use TTRPGs as my creative outlet. 26 years a DM.
ToSisPoS
World-building a helluva drug.
Ekaris9
HELLS YEAH! Remember, half the fun of being a DM, is sadism!
Arcadian1
Same for me as an ST (I got into roleplaying but the group never did D&D)
CorvidPrime
36 years playing, nearly as many DMing. Was I any good back then? No… Am I better now? Also no…
ToSisPoS
But you do it. Finding a steady dm is only slightly easier than finding a family gp.
khaoselement
...I've...I've never played. Forever DM woes are real.
Arbitrarynamehere
That's so sad! Your friends should try running a one shot or something with you as a player sometime
ToSisPoS
But be honest: would you not rankle at the Other DM not DMing as you DM?
khaoselement
Are you kidding me? I'd be too busy being paralyzed with analysis paralysis over finally getting to make a character, and what I want to do, to ever show up.
ToSisPoS
I too get stuck on the freedom. Reminds me of the Litterbox comic where Fran couldn’t decide how to spend a whole day to herself.
