Two years ago, I suffered an injury near my toes on my left foot. I didn't notice for a week, and it got infected. They had to amputate the front of my foot, just behind the toes. Alas, nine months later, after multiple additional "revision" surgeries, that wound refused to heal, and the decision was made to amputate.

Because I'm in my late 40s and therefore young enough that I should be able to walk again, the next place they go is below the knee, so in March of 2022 I had a BKA (below knee amputation). By June it had healed enough that I got my first prosthetic leg.

Unfortunately, my medical history is… well… very long. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2007, but had no insurance. They put me on metformin, but that didn't help much - and while I cut out *sugars*, I didn't know about *carbs*, so I was poor and surviving on pasta, potatoes, rice, bread… and nobody thought to educate me, and I just slipped through the cracks. (But I did drop from 380lbs to around 325lbs, so please don't judge me TOO harshly)

In 2017, I had a saddle pulmonary embolism and should have died, but obviously and luckily did not. At that point, recognizing that living in a small town with no insurance and insufficient work was going to leave me dead, I convince my wife to let me look for work. So I found a job and we moved.

Alas, a decade of damage was already done, so while I got insurance and started getting my health in check, since 2018 I've had four heart attacks, my kidney function is close to failing, and I have a number of other less critical issues.

So back to last year. I got the prosthesis, but heart/kidney issues hit and my body was retaining more fluid, so I couldn't wear the prosthesis. Once I got that in check and was back to wearing the leg every day (around late January of this year), I actually shrank so that I was having to wear a number of socks (you can see a white sock in the video - that's a 3 layer sock) - upwards of 15 layers. But the shape of my leg had changed, and I was unable to *walk* in the prosthetic leg, it only helped in doing transfers with the wheelchair (to bed/toilet/car/etc).

I also got a different doctor at the clinic who actually listened to me. She is SO FREAKING awesome. And so a couple of months ago, after a couple of appointments where we tried adjusting the previous leg and various things, she started the process on a new leg. First they had to cast my leg. Then three weeks later, I went back and tried out the "tester" they made from the casting - not designed to be a permanent leg, just to see if it would work. It needed adjusting, so another three weeks for them to make another tester. That one worked, so then it was ANOTHER three weeks to today's appointment to pick up the new leg. Everything just takes time!

But I got the new leg today!

Now, I'm essentially starting from scratch. I haven't been able to walk - it's been just over two years since the original injury that I've been having to use this damn wheelchair… so I've never built up a callous on my remnant leg. Also, mostly sitting means my stamina is extremely low - especially with my various other issues (I didn't mention, but anemia is one of the many).

But! While it's uncomfortable to walk with a walker, I CAN DO IT NOW. I can only go around 100 feet before I'm exhausted, but that's okay! That's a start! For the first time in two years, I have true and real hope of getting back on my feet........ well.......... back on my foot ;-) — and building up stamina and actually walking. It'll take a while before I'm comfortable on this leg. But it fits SO much better.

Even wearing it just a few hours now, it is so much more comfortable and less bulky.

I may not walk any more today - my back is killing me. But tomorrow? I'm hoping I can walk 2-3 maybe 4 times for like 10 minutes, or even 5 minutes for the last session. I want to build up my stamina.

I also have been wanting this bitterly because with my heart issues - I have two stents, but they can't put any more where they're needed, so my solution to get healthy is "diet and exercise".

I've been working on that. I'm down to 289lbs. Part of what's hurt me on losing weight is that insulin tries to store that energy - so while I haven't been overeating, my body has taken the food I do eat and tried to store it as fat, so I've been holding weight AND being anemic and tired. So frustrating! So progress is slow, but I'm expecting that....... exercise will help.

I'm hoping this is the watershed moment that finally gets me on the path of changing the rest of my life.

First I have to build stamina walking with my walker. Then once I'm able to put full weight on my leg and be okay doing that, I can try to graduate to using a cane. I may always use/carry a cane for stability, but as long as I get where I can walk decently normally with a cane, I can start driving again, which will be really nice. Then I can look for a bicycle solution that works - because when I was younger, I used to ride my bike everywhere, and there are some awesome bike paths here in SE Virginia that I want to ride.

Hopefully I'll be able to look back in 2027 and 1) be alive, and 2) look at 2023 as the midpoint between the lows of 2017 and the hopefully-then me, able to walk, run errands, go biking…

Here's a comparison of the old leg - on the right - with the second tester on the left. Note that the tester is clear plastic - the thing inside is the gel liner that goes on my leg. It has a steel peg at the bottom with grooves that "clicks" into the top of the pylon which is how the thing attaches to me. But you can see what a big difference there is there!

Every journey begins with a single bird in the bush, or something, congratulations.

This is the damned truth. And social safety nets.

I'd rather progressives got a million more votes. heh.

I didn't read the description because I had hopes a whale or shark took it. Please tell me im right

Nah, it was a crocodile. Bastard snuck up on me. By the way, have I shown you my new shoes (well… shoe) and purse for my wife? :)

To help stop soreness from friction while you build up callouses you can buy Adaptskin ointment and slather it on the worst spots before putting on your prosthesis. Overnight I like to use Sween Cream on the worst spots to help heal. You can get Adaptskin on Amazon and Sween Cream should be at your local pharmacy (it's a cream meant for burns). I have been an amputee for 36 years. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

That's awesome, thank you. I absolutely will check those out. The "good" news on that front is that my stamina is so low right now my doctor thinks I can't harm my leg before I give out. Lol. But hopefully later I will have those problems -and when I do, that'll help. I hope to make it 36 more years :) probably won't, but I'm trying!

Amusingly enough, I work at Colonial Williamsburg, and the evening pirate show has told me they will make me a wooden peg leg if I will join the show. :D

Dude how are you still alive ? F'ing A ! Congrats !

Lots of luck so far. And thank you <3

Congrats on the prosthetic! As a diabetic (type 1), I was misdiagnosed type 2 and treated as such for a while due to my weight. One thing you should know: diabetes education is *atrocious*, pretty much all over the world. Type 2 in particular is treated extremely poorly due to the stigmas and biases attached to it. As long as people consider it a 'lifestyle disease you give yourself', over a 'genetic disease that has multiple causes', this will never change. >

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

> You never gave yourself diabetes, you got diabetes. Insulin resistance is a reason for weight gain, not the other way around. (IR presents often before symptoms appear because of how the body tries to regulate this.) And the lack of education on carbs, even the still current misconceptions on carbs in general, still cause people to have this happen to them. If my nurse hadn't been fantastic and recognized I didn't fit type 2, I may have gone into DKA and never woken up again. >

> This is all to say: the damage is done, but you weren't at fault. The system was. This disease is so complex, no matter the type (there are about 8+!), and it's often reduced to "just cut out sugar and exercise more" without acknowledging the additional challenges that come with it. You're amazing, keep on doing what you're doing!!

① There's a lot to unpack here. First and foremost, <3 thank you for the kind words and well wishes. I took the liberty of stalking some of your previous comments and you appear to be a pretty kickass person. Second, you've clearly done reading and research on the topic at hand. Some of what I found aligns with what you've said, and some I'm not sure does, but either way, you've given me something to think about and look at. I'd promise to do more reading, but frankly at this point, I basically

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

② have become more interested in treating my disease and various medical conditions than researching why they happened. Although I do think modern commercial food production generally adds too many sugars and is too heavy on carbs. Although I am not pro-keto. Our bodies need a balance of carbs/protein/fats. But anyway, I don't want to stir that pot too much because I'm not sure just how much debate on that topic I can handle. lol. But again, I think at a minimum, our viewpoints aren't all that

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

③ far apart, so hey, is all good imho. Also to specifically say (before I move on) that things like "just cut out sugar and exercise more" are… yeah… useless. lol. "Just lose the weight!" well no shit, sherlock, if I could I would. lol. But anyway, I did want to get to one other things, especially now that I'm a couple of comments deep in my reply so very very few will get to this point to read it. heh. I spent years on reddit as a good place for conversation, although it's gone downhill over

Will they re-use your old leg for someone else?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nobody wants it I assure you. Lol. I don't actually know what happened but I'm sure it was discussed of as bed's waste - and rightfully so.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didnt know George r r martin got in an accident

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow congrats! Keep it up.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Congrats brother, you rock! Now please, stop waiting and go finish your fucking books, I want to know what's happened to Jon Snow for real.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fk ya bro. Keep at it.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Super excited for you -- keep it up! Humans are astonishingly resilient. You've been through some shit but you seem to have found people that can help and you have a spirit and vigor for rebuilding yourself that I wish I had. That will take you far.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I apologize in advance. Congrats on getting a leg up on life. Sorry you left your leg behind, but it seems you are all right now. But seriously congrats on the new leg

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I gotta put my feet down.. well, foot down, and say no apology needed. Although I'm clearly a leg down on life. I'd say you deserve twenty lashes with a wet noodle but I can only count to fifteen now. So. Fifteen pages with a wet noodle for you!

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Damn great comeback

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jesus "I can only count to fifteen now" I have a few friends to pass various numbers of that to.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You are such a fucking badass. Both the leg & that hat look amazing on you! Thank you for sharing your journey <3

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! <3 I have that hat in eight different colours. I'm addicted to the thing. lol

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can absolutely see why!!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Put some flames on it! (the prosthetic, not your leg. That would be bad.)

3 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

They got tattoos for that.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had a chance to give them some fabric to install with the leg, and the problem is… I can't decide. I want something one day, but I want something else another day. lol. I need to get prosthetic covers, which would allow me to have multiple options. :D

From someone who had a broken leg at 12 years old who had to learn how to walk again to a person learning to walk again, I say... YEAH BUDDY! GO GET EM!

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's amazing the idea that something I did for 46 years I no longer know how to do right. lol. But practice, practice, practice! I'm glad your leg got better!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks. Yeah, it's pretty good, aside from the fact the busted leg is an inch shorter than the other one, making my hip and my walk a bit wonk.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oof. Probably doesn't help much since I now have an adjustable-height leg, but they kept having to make it shorter and shorter. heh. I was born knock-kneed, pigeon-toed, flat-footed, with a twisted hip. So that has made it a "fun" job for the prosthetist. lol. But for you - I'm glad you can walk. Life truly sucks without that ability. <3

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wish I had an adjustable leg.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but the price of entry is probably not worth it on the whole… <3

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn bro, sounds like life keeps trying to get you and you keep kicking it's ass (now with a new foot)

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

LOL. There is a silver-inused "liner liner" I have to help in case a wound appears on the leg. I can stretch it to my thigh, but when I do, the gel liner no longer sticks and the leg won't stay on. Dang it! So close! :)

Thigh High Thursday. Do yourself a favor and search imgur for tht

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Ah! I appreciate the definition, but I've got no particular interest in thighs. Glad people are having fun.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No interest in thighs?? I've never heard those words in that order.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's because he saw my thighs. ;-)

Yeah, I forgot to download sexualinterest.exe.

You mean 'Celebrity Rich Evans'? He's far more recognisable, I mean he has been on Ellen.

I was going to say that the Fishing Boat has been missing her Captain, and hopefully the new prosthetic was a good Sea Leg. <_<

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Scrolled down to make sure this was top comment.... Was not disappointed

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hehe, I thought the same. So glad it's top comment.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thank you. It's funny that you make this comment. I sometimes think to myself on other platforms when people post something and will say "WARNING: LONG POST" and it's like two paragraphs. I understand some people are not used to reading, but I'm the opposite. I grew up with my nose in books. So while long posts irritate you, short ones irritate me. But thank you for the positive thoughts <3

3 years ago | Likes 126 Dislikes 11

It seems you have a leg up on better health now. I hope you shake a leg and continue your recovery.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Can't shake a leg, I need the one I have left to stand on. ;-)

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You seem like a wholesome dude. Looks good on ya'

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I wasn't irritated by your long post. You look a bit like George RR Martin with the hat and beard.

For a split second before the page finished loading, I thought he was George Martin.

Well that's more than GRRM can say for the past 10 years or so!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I love this interpretation and response. Thank you
