As for Gracie, this whole experience of receiving so much love from this time capsule, and all the people who have shared it, has been such a positive and encouraging experience, her mom said.
As mentioned before, Gracie had absolutely no idea her family had made her the capsule. “On her birthday, she only had a few of her choir friends come over. I (her mom) had the time capsule waiting on the kitchen island for her when she got home. Gracie asked me why there was a cooler on the island."
It was very special for the whole family and there were moments when many of them were in tears, especially when Gracie was reading letters from her great-grandparents and great-great aunts who have since passed. “Gracie’s favorite things were pictures of her grandparents, jewelry, and, savings bonds and cash. She said she felt that there were so many people that cared about her that she didn’t even know. I asked her what she wishes we would have included in the box but didn’t, and she said predictions on what we thought she’d be like at 18, would have been fun.”
Magazines from back when she was born.
A letter from her belated great-grandpa.

Now I want a time capsule! It just seems so cool to open one and see a piece of one's own history.
Shitheid
I wrote myself a note in 200 (or there abouts) I haven’t opened it yet but still occasionally find it while cleaning. I may open it soon

I just realized it's been nearly 18 years since I graduated from high school.... Time does fly when you're older.
jbilly90
Yep been out almost 12 years myself. Fuck high school. I hated that place
gonzar09
Me too! And my wife and I are expecting our first this year! Never thought at 17 I'd be saying those words at 35.
Deathwing777
That's why Treebeard always took forever to do anything, a day was like a second for him.
maninthedarkness
That was when my age began to hit me, was when kids who were born the year I graduated were able to buy tobacco.
StaalTheNotQuiteSoUndefeatedAnymoreButNevermind
The only thing I found that slows it down is constantly doing new things. Even then though.

It'll be 15 years for me this May. I work with a young woman who is a full decade younger than me. (Granted I don't act my age.)

It's nearly 20 years old and has oils in it. That sucker will be SUPER rancid by now. Not delicious, and not strictly safe to eat.

It is a mini-DV tape. For digital camcorders. (Yes, digital cameras use tape!)
ThrownClub
I have chunks of corn in my crap older than this kid’s time capsule.
tokennametaken
On the cob?
PimpinKen
Havent you ever heard the term "cornhole?"
butterflybuttler221
Why was there even a cassette, it was 2002
tomatoboy
MiniDV was a cassette format, but it was digital and had fairly good quality. You could hook a miniDV camcorder to your computer easily.
Boomboomyeahshaketheroom
That was still common for low cost home video. CF was too small and costly and writable cd/DVD was just unrealistic in implementation
Counterfit
Camcorders still used tape in 2002
tomatoboy
Cassettes were the only real option for more than a few minutes of video for consumer devices at the time. SD and CF cards lacked...
tomatoboy
...the capacity, hard disks were too expensive, and rewritable optical discs weren’t an option at that size.
tomatoboy
It’s just miniDV, that’s not a hard one at all.
AdrianMole
It actually is, you need the camera to play the tape and most computers these days don't connect to these camera's.
tomatoboy
They made players for MiniDV, and it’s trivial to access these cameras, most work on either FireWire (cards still available)...
tomatoboy
...or painfully slow USB. I had one for years.
tomatoboy
If you can’t get it via digital for some strange reason, they still have analog outputs.
AdrianMole
I never encountered a minidv player, I don't need that anymore but I do know people who could use one.
tomatoboy
There are several on eBay right now. They used to be available, but weren’t exceedingly common. There are standalone units, units with a...
AdrianMole
Indeed for this purpose I installed a card in my desktop at home to add a firewire card.
tomatoboy
I still keep a FireWire card in mine for stuff like this, too.
